Polypropylene mesh is frequently used in urogynecology procedures; however, pain and mesh exposure into the vagina occur in ~10% of cases. Mesh-induced pain, which occurs with or without exposure, persists after removal in 50% of cases. Chronic pain history predicts poor response to mesh removal but only a fraction have this diagnosis. We hypothesize that mesh induced pain is correlated with fibrosis and failure to improve with a heightened inflammatory and fibrotic host response. As an important tool for the surgical treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction, the safety of mesh must be guaranteed. Although the short-term curative effect of most synthetic mesh is satisfactory, complications often occur due to its material. Planting stem cells on mesh through specific methods may resolve the problems of mesh with poor biocompatibility or an uncontrollable rate o degradation. Based on recent research, this paper summarizes the research progress of stem cells composited with common mesh materials, such as polypropylene, polylactic acid and acellular matrix.

Sciatic hernia is a rare pelvic floor hernia that occurs through the greater or lesser sciatic foramen. Sciatic hernias often present as pelvic pain, particularly in women, and diagnosis can be difficult. Transabdominal and transgluteal operative approaches, including laparoscopic repair, have been reported. We show a laparoscopic technique using a plug of human allogeneic dermal matrix and lightweight polypropylene extraperitoneal patch avoiding fixation. The patient had significant improvement of her symptoms and no complications at 12 months follow-up.

This report describes two cases of urinary stress incontinence secondary to mesh repair of large abdominal hernias. Both patients had never experienced urinary incontinence before their hernia repair. In both cases, polypropylene nets were inserted to stabilise the abdominal wall. Immediately after the intervention, both patients became stress incontinent. Probably pressure transmission to the pelvic floor was increased due to stabilisation of the abdominal wall, which worked as a "windpipe" before surgery. After the insertion of suburethral tapes the incontinence resolved.

Pelvic mesh slings are increasingly used to create abdomino-pelvic partitions. This procedure is usually safe and carries low morbidity and mortality rates. However, we report a case of a 60-year-old male with a history of an abdomino-perineal resection for a low rectal carcinoma followed by adjuvant radiotherapy, who presented with an entero-vesicle-cutaneous fistula as a result of the polypropylene mesh eroding into his small bowel. He had to have a total cystectomy, small bowel resection and mesh removal in order to alleviate his symptoms.

Collapse of the cervical portion of the trachea was diagnosed for 2 young large-breed dogs. Clinical signs included worsening respiratory stridor and coughing exacerbated by exercise. The diagnosis was confirmed by use of conventional radiography and fluoroscopy of the trachea. The increased use of phacoemulsification and small incision surgery has led to interest in a soft intraocular lens (IOL) for implantation after cataract extraction. We present the pathologic findings of seven eyes obtained postmortem from five patients with silicone IOLs. Length of implantation ranged from 6 weeks to 13 months. There was symmetric bag-bag fixation in all cases. Two IOLs had distorted and compressed polypropylene loops, resulting in decentration. The silicone IOL appeared to be well tolerated in all cases.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a surgical technique for pelvic prolapse mesh excision.
SETTING: Tertiary health center.
PARTICIPANT: A 62-year-old woman with chronic pelvic pain, beginning 10 years after Prolift® Polypropylene mesh vaginal mesh placement (Gynecare, Ethicon, Johnson & Johnson, Somerville, NJ, USA). Exam showed a 4 × 1 cm vaginal mesh erosion and tenderness over the left S3-S4 dermatomes. MRI showed scarring around S3-S4 nerve roots, therefore entrapment of S3-S4 nerve roots was presumed.

A 62-year-old man with a history of long-term asbestos exposure was found to have a chest wall tumor invading the sixth rib on chest computed tomography. The computed tomography also revealed multiple plaques in the pleura. Malignant pleural mesothelioma was suspected, and thoracoscopic surgery was performed. Interstitial lung disease (ILD) due to inhalation of fume/smoke from heating or burning of synthetic polymers has not been reported previously. A fish farm worker developed ILD after cutting rope (polypropylene and nylon) for about 2 hours per day over an extended period using an electrically heated 'knife'. This process produced fume/smoke that entered the workers breathing zone. No other likely cause was identified. This case suggests that exposure to airborne contaminants generated by the heating or burning of synthetic polymers has the potential to cause serious lung disease.

Several transscleral suturing techniques require intricate surgical maneuvers and are associated with an increased risk for surgical trauma. We describe a new scleral fixation method that combines the advantages of temporary haptic externalization and injector implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). Soybean peroxidase (20 mg) catalyzed the oxidative polymerization of cardanol in 2-propanol/phospate buffer solution (25 ml, 1:1 v/v) and yielded 62% polycardanol over 6 h. Cobalt naphthenate (0.5% w/w) catalyzed the crosslinking of polycardanol and the final hardness of crosslinked polycardanol film exceeded 9 H scale as pencil scratch hardness, which shows a high potential as a commercial coating material. In addition, it showed an excellent anti-biofouling activity to Pseudomonas fluorescens compared to other polymeric materials such as polypropylene.

Two young men with primary ectopic lenses had intracapsular cataract extraction and scleral fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PC IOLs) using 10-0 polypropylene sutures tied to the IOL eyelets. Three to 9 years after implantation, spontaneous IOL vertical subluxation occurred in all 4 eyes (5 IOL loops), probably because of suture breakage. Late subluxation of a sutured IOL may occur several years after implantation. Double fixation and thicker sutures should be considered, especially in young patients.
