Four-Dimensional (4D) Printing: A New Evolution in Computed Tomography-Guided Stereolithographic Modeling. Principles and Application.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, image-guided production of three-dimensional (3D) haptic biomodels, or rapid prototyping (RP), has transformed the way surgeons conduct preoperative planning. In contrast to earlier RP techniques such as stereolithography, 3D printing has introduced fast, affordable office-based manufacturing. We introduce the concept of 4D printing for the first time by introducing time as the fourth dimension to 3D printing. METHODS: The bones of the thumb ray are 3D printed during various movements to demonstrate four-dimensional (4D) printing. Principles and validation st

Fiber-Based Hydrogels for Designing Viscoelastic Responses in Particle-Based Biomaterials That Support Embedded 3D Printing.

Viscoelastic biomaterials that exhibit biomimetic responses to applied stresses are important in studying physiology and designing biomaterial scaffolds. Particle-based hydrogels offer potential for engineering viscoelasticity through the design of both the component microparticles and their processing into bulk particle-based materials. When particles are not cross-linked to one another, particle movements in response to strain can potentially relieve applied stresses and facilitate the material's use in dynamic processes like bioprinting. In particle-based hydrogels based on spherical hydrog

A customizable, low-cost 3D-printed device for live cell confinement imaging.

Physical confinement profoundly shapes cell functions from migration to cancer invasiveness. Although multiple in vitro confinement platforms have been designed to replicate physical constraints while enabling simultaneous live-cell imaging, broad adoption across the biology community has been limited because most available platforms require specialized fabrication, offer limited design flexibility, or are prohibitively costly. Here, we introduce an inexpensive, fully customizable confinement platform fabricated using standard 3D printers and readily available materials. The confinement device

3D-Printed Hollow Microneedle Potentiometric Sensors: A Modular Approach.

Microneedle sensors represent a genuine approach to continuous health monitoring with minimally invasive access to skin interstitial fluid. However, their clinical deployment is hindered by complex fabrication and functionalization processes that compromise reproducibility and scalability. Truly, recent advancements in additive manufacturing have diminished certain obstacles; yet, single-modality techniques continue to encounter a significant trade-off between attaining high resolution and including electrochemical functionality. Accordingly, we introduce herein a novel modular hollow micronee

Using simple to more robust in vitro methods based on human pulmonary models to evaluate the acute and subacute toxicity of micro- and nanoplastics derived from 3D printing materials.

Mechanical recycling and other processes involved in the end-of-life treatment of 3D-printed plastic polymers can lead to the generation of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs). As the use of these materials continues to grow, the mechanical degradation of plastics from 3D printing may increase human exposure to MNPs, raising concerns about potential health risks for users and environmental impacts. One of the main routes of exposure to MNPs is via inhalation. For regulatory purposes, most of inhalation studies have been performed using rodents and following the OECD TG 412, however, these models do

Towards standardizing cytotoxicity testing of 3D-printed orthodontic aligners and retainers: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) printing enables customized orthodontic aligners and retainers, but concerns persist regarding the biocompatibility of printable resins. Although ISO 10993-5 and ISO 10993-12 provide guidance for in vitro cytotoxicity testing and sample extraction, substantial flexibility in reporting and execution may hinder comparability across studies. OBJECTIVE: To map how in vitro cytotoxicity testing is performed for materials used to 3D-print orthodontic aligners/retainers and to identify variation and reporting gaps in key ISO 10993-5/-12 testing domains. METHODS: F

An Implanted Tooth That Can Feel.

Diverse material species, ranging from gold to ceramic, have been selected to construct dental implants in the past decades. However, existing implants are primarily designed to restore masticatory function yet fail to completely recover the sensory feedback of natural teeth. Deprivation of sensory inputs impairs the perception of food texture and hinders the regulation of chewing force. This defect could result in unnecessary overload, leading to technical complications and biological failures, such as bone loss and temporomandibular joint damage, which remarkably limit their clinical outcome

Effect of different washing and post-curing protocols on the fracture resistance of 3D-printed pediatric crowns after thermal cycling.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is increasingly used for pediatric crown restorations; however, post-processing procedures may critically influence their mechanical performance. This in vitro study evaluated the effects of washing and post-curing durations on the fracture resistance and fracture pattern distribution of 3D-printed pediatric crowns after thermal cycling. Ninety crowns fabricated using a digital light processing (DLP) printer were assigned to nine groups according to washing (0, 3, and 10 min of ultrasonic cleaning) and post-curing (0, 10, and 20 min) durations. After cementation

Impact of multiple steam sterilizations on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed surgical items.

This study investigates how repeated steam sterilization affects the mechanical properties of 3D-printed surgical items made from methacrylate-based Surgical Guide Resin. Unlike single-use instruments, reusable 3D-printed instruments undergo multiple sterilization cycles, which may compromise their durability. Cuboids produced using Digital Light Processing (DLP) were exposed to up to ten steam sterilization cycles (121 °C, 110 kPa), followed by drying. Mechanical tests included three-point bending, Shore D hardness, and microscopic analysis to assess elasticity, hardness, and structural chang

Quality by design (QbD) liposomes engineering using 3D printed Tesla microfluidic arrays.

Microfluidic arrays have been successfully implemented for the design and development of liposome nanoparticles. In this study we have applied a Quality by Design (QbD) approach to investigate the effect of 3D printed Tesla microfluidic designs (direct and serpentine shape) on the liposome nanoparticles in comparison with conventional ultrasonication methodology. Critical processing parameters (CPP) such as the shape, length and channel width of the Tesla arrays were also studied. Furthermore, the effect of critical material attributes (CMA), including the length of the phosphatidylcholine (PC

Development of a biofidelic human spine model for vibration characterization.

Vibration is a physical phenomenon that occurs when objects or systems move back and forth rapidly. Millions of people worldwide are affected by vibration-related health issues every year. However, prolonged exposure to vibration can have serious health implications, including back pain, muscle strain, and damage to nerves and blood vessels. While computational modelling studies and tests on dummies have been performed, these do not accurately simulate the structural and material components of the spine, leading to less accurate results. Therefore, this study attempted to develop a biofidelic

Label-Free Longitudinal Imaging of Single Cell Drug Response with a 3D-Printed Cell Culture Platform.

Image-based phenotypic screening has emerged as a powerful tool for revealing single-cell heterogeneity and dynamic phenotypic responses in preclinical drug discovery. Compared to traditional static end point assays, live-cell longitudinal imaging captures the temporal trajectories of individual cells, including transient morphological adaptations, motility shifts, and divergent subpopulation behaviors, enabling high content features and more robust early prediction of treatment outcomes. Fluorescence-based screening, while highly specific, is constrained in live-cell contexts by broad spectra

A 3D-printed phantom for stereotactic body radiation therapy simulation.

In modern radiation therapy for lung cancer, examining the uncertainty between tumor motion and beam delivery is vitally important. To lower the radiation dose delivery to the patient's normal tissue, narrowing the irradiation field margin to hit the tumor accurately is critical. Thus we proposed a phantom that simulates the thorax and lung tumor's motions by employing a 3D printing technique. The lung tumor is controlled by a linear miniature Delta robot arm, with a maximum displacement of 20 mm in each direction. When we simulated the thoracic breathing movements at 12 mm in A-P (Anterior-Po

Surgical Technique of the 3-Dimensional-printed Personalized Hip Implant for the Treatment of Canine Hip Dysplasia.

Hip dysplasia causes major disability in dogs. Treatment options are limited to palliative treatment (e.g., pain relief, physical exercise, lifestyle changes, and weight control) or invasive surgeries such as pelvic osteotomies and total hip arthroplasty. Hence, a strong unmet need exists for an effective and dog-friendly solution that enhances the quality of life of man's best friend. We fill this treatment gap by offering a minimally traumatic and extraarticular, dog-specific, 3-dimensional-printed, hip implant (3DHIP) that restores hip joint stability. The surgical treatment using a 3DHIP i
