Effects of emergency nursing interventions on the outcome of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A randomized controlled trial.

With the development of healthcare concepts, nursing interventions are gradually being emphasized in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. This study aims to explore the impact of emergency nursing interventions on outcomes for patients with COPD. Eighty-four patients with COPD were included in the analysis, the control group received routine nursing (42 cases), and the research group received emergency nursing (42 cases). We compared the pulmonary functions of the 2 groups: forced vital capacity, peak expiratory flow, forced expiratory volume in the first sec

Quality of life in elderly patients with COPD: measurement and predictive factors.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity in old age. It leads to reduced quality of life (QoL), but the factors that contribute to this are less understood. There is no consensus on measurement of QoL in elderly COPD patients. We assessed (a) factors predicting QoL in elderly COPD out-patients and (b) specificity (SP), sensitivity (SEN), positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) and repeatability of two disease-specific QoL instruments, the Chronic Respiratory Disease Questionnaire (CRQ) and the Breathing Problems Questionnaire (BPQ) in elderly peo

HIV-untested men who have sex with men in South Africa: the perception of not being at risk and fear of being tested.

A community-based needs assessment among men who have sex with men (MSM) in South Africa found that 27 % (n = 280/1,045) of MSM had never been tested for HIV. The most frequently reported reasons for not having been tested were the perception of not being at risk (57 %) and fear of being tested (52 %). This article explores factors associated with these two reasons among the untested MSM. In multiple logistic regressions, the perception of not being at risk of HIV infection was negatively associated with being black, coloured or Indian, being sexually active, knowing people living with HIV, an

Psychological therapies (remotely delivered) for the management of chronic and recurrent pain in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: This is the first update of a review published in 2015, Issue 1. Chronic pain is common during childhood and adolescence and is associated with negative outcomes, such as increased severity of pain, reduced function, and low mood. Psychological therapies, traditionally delivered face-to-face with a therapist, are efficacious at reducing pain intensity and disability. To address barriers to treatment access, such as distance and cost of treatment, technology is being used to deliver these psychological therapies remotely. Therapies delivered remotely, such as via the Internet, compu

Chaihu-Shugan-San ameliorates tumor growth in prostate cancer promoted by depression via modulating sphingolipid and glycerinphospholipid metabolism.

Background: Psychologic depression is a pivotal pathological characteristic and has been shown to promote prostate cancer (PCa) progression. Chaihu-Shugan-San (CSS), a well-known Chinese herbal decoction, exhibits efficacy in the treatment of stress-accelerated PCa. However, the underlying mechanism of CSS in resisting PCa growth is still unknown, and further study is needed. Objective: To evaluate the effects of CSS on stress-accelerated PCa in a BALB/C nude mice model and to investigate the underlying mechanisms. Methods: PC-3 cells were implanted into BALB/C nude mice, and the stressed mice

The role of motor simulation in action perception: a neuropsychological case study.

Research on embodied cognition stresses that bodily and motor processes constrain how we perceive others. Regarding action perception the most prominent hypothesis is that observed actions are matched to the observer's own motor representations. Previous findings demonstrate that the motor laws that constrain one's performance also constrain one's perception of others' actions. The present neuropsychological case study asked whether neurological impairments affect a person's performance and action perception in the same way. The results showed that patient DS, who suffers from a frontal brain

Designing vocabulary multiple-choice tests for exploring word frequency effects in distributional semantics.

The representation of word meanings by positions in a vector space is now widely used across a range of psychological models and technological applications. There exist many different approaches for creating such vectors, with distributional semantic vectors (DSVs) often produced directly or indirectly from word co-occurrence statistics derived from large corpora of natural language. One of the most widely used methods for testing and comparing their performance is the vocabulary multiple-choice question (VMCQ) test, in which the best synonym of each tested word has to be identified from among

VRrec: A zero-coding open-source VR body-motion capture tool for behavioral research.

We present VRrec, an open-source, motion-tracking and recording tool for PC-based virtual reality (VR). The tool addresses a persistent gap in VR-based experimental research by enabling real-time capture of head, hand, and optional body-tracking data without the need to code. VRrec runs discreetly in the background, collecting positional and rotational data as researchers engage participants with third-party VR applications. This design lets researchers use flexible paradigms that leverage off-the-shelf VR content, eliminating the need to build or modify custom software. However, because VRrec

Aesthetic mediation and lateral agency: Rethinking trauma and drug consumption in 'crisis ordinariness'.

Trauma has a become a dominant causal explanation in psychological and public health accounts of drug use, with drug consumption typically framed as a coping response or form of self-medication. Drawing on Lauren Berlant's work (2008, 2011), particularly their concepts of genre, crisis ordinariness and lateral agency, we examine the affective and political conventions of trauma as a genre for understanding problematic or heavy drug use. This article analyses three consumers' life story narratives drawn from a large-scale, Australian qualitative study on experiences of trauma and drug consumpti

Cluster analysis of long COVID symptoms for deciphering a syndrome and its long-term consequence.

The long-term symptoms of COVID-19 are the subject of public and scientific discussions. Understanding how those long COVID symptoms co-occur in clusters of syndromes may indicate the pathogenic mechanisms of long COVID. Our study objective was to cluster the different long COVID symptoms. We included persons who had a COVID-19 and assessed long-term symptoms (at least 4 weeks after first symptoms). Hierarchical clustering was applied to the symptoms as well as to the participants based on the Euclidean distance h of the log-values of the answers on symptom severity. The distribution of cluste

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on chronic pain and opioid use in marginalized populations: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a variable effect on vulnerable populations, including patients with chronic pain who rely on opioid treatment or have comorbid opioid use disorder. Limited access to care due to isolation measures may lead to increased pain severity, worse mental health symptoms, and adverse opioid-related outcomes. This scoping review aimed to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the dual epidemics of chronic pain and opioids in marginalized communities worldwide. METHODS: Searches of primary databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Psy
