A psychosocial perspective. Growing up with thalassemia, a chronic disorder.

Thalassemia influences individual and family psychosocial functioning. Parental reaction to diagnosis affects the parent-child relationship, parents' roles, and family resources for coping. A child frequently translates parental reactions into personal attitudes of dependency and lowered self-esteem. In coping with one child's disease, parents often sacrifice the needs of other siblings. Attainment of optimal development may be promoted or hindered. As the child's environment widens, negative attitudes may be reinforced. Poor school performance due to absenteeism, physical differences that lea…

Prospective Relationships Between Motivation and Functioning in Recovery After a First Episode of Schizophrenia.

Diminished motivation is associated with robust impairment in psychosocial functioning in schizophrenia (SZ). Little is known about the reciprocal relationships between motivation and functioning, particularly following a first episode of psychosis. We tested bidirectional associations between motivation and social and occupational functioning in the year following a first episode of SZ spectrum disorder among patients in the Recovery After an Initial Schizophrenia Episode-Early Treatment Program (RAISE-ETP) study. Four hundred four individuals (aged 15-40) who presented with a first episode o…

Parental Stress and Child Quality of Life after Pediatric Burn.

Parents' emotions after their child's burn might be influenced by the injury circumstances or demographic characteristics of the patient and family. Parents' post-traumatic stress symptoms and their child's distress may interact and affect emotional states. The psychosocial outcomes of parents were measured using the Impact of Event Scale-Revised, the CARe Burn Scale, and the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory-Brief. The psychosocial quality of life outcomes of the pediatric burn patients were measured using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL). Regression analysis was used to assess

The relationship of cognitive functioning to amount of recent and lifetime alcohol consumption in outpatient alcoholics.

Previous investigations of the relationship between drinking patterns and cognitive functioning have generally studied severely alcoholic patients, in whom the neurocognitive effects of alcohol consumption can be obscured by other medical or psychosocial factors. In the present study, cognitive functioning was examined after a minimum of 4 days of abstinence in 69 mildly to moderately alcohol-dependent outpatients without comorbid psychiatric, neurologic, or systemic medical illness. Circumscribed decrements in reaction time and verbal memory were associated with higher amounts of alcohol cons

Ecological Momentary Assessment of Person-Reported Outcomes in Diabetes: Unlocking Insights with Continuous Glucose Monitoring and the Potential for Precision Medicine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Diabetes self-management is accompanied by time-varying emotional and motivational challenges that impact mental health. These day-to-day fluctuations can be assessed via ecological momentary assessment (EMA), that allows the repeated sampling of psychosocial variables in everyday life. The benefits of EMA over questionnaires mirror the benefits of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) over HbA1c. We describe the insights generated by combining EMA and CGM and highlight its potential. RECENT FINDINGS: Research shows that glucose levels can influence subsequent mood, stress, co
