Stem Cell Therapy Using Bone Marrow-Derived Muse Cells Repairs Radiation-Induced Intestinal Injury Through Their Intestine-Homing via Sphingosine Monophosphate-Sphingosine Monophosphate Receptor 2 Interaction.

PURPOSE: There is still no effective treatment for the gastrointestinal side effects of radiation therapy. Multilineage-differentiating stress-enduring (Muse) cells are tissue stem cells that have the ability to spontaneously home in on injured tissues and repair them. Several clinical trials have shown that stem cell therapy using human bone marrow-derived Muse (hBM-Muse) cells is effective in treating various diseases, but it is not known whether they are effective in treating radiation-induced intestinal injury. In this study, we investigated whether hBM-Muse cells are homing to the radiati

Radiation-induced effects to nontarget abdominal and pelvic viscera.

Radiation injuries often occur during or after radiation therapy in the abdomen or pelvis. Although any organ in the abdomen or pelvis may be exposed to and injured by radiation therapy directed to a nearby organ, this article focuses on more frequently encountered imaging findings of inadvertent radiation damage. It is important for the radiologist to be familiar with the imaging appearances of inadvertent radiation damage to abdominopelvic viscera in order to sustain clinical relevance and not mistake radiation injuries for other entities.

An Atypical Presentation of Radiation-Induced Enteritis Treated With Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

Delayed radiation-induced injuries generally manifest months to years after the completion of radiation therapy and can be challenging to diagnose and treat because of a paucity of evidence-based therapeutic options. Individuals who receive high doses of radiation therapy are more likely to experience delayed radiation injuries, but those who receive relatively low radiation doses may also rarely develop this condition. We present the case of a patient who developed delayed radiation-induced enteritis several weeks after receiving low-dose radiation therapy to the terminal ileum. The patient's…

Acute Radiation-induced Lung Injury in the Non-human Primate: A Review and Comparison of Mortality and Co-morbidities Using Models of Partial-body Irradiation with Marginal Bone Marrow Sparing and Whole Thorax Lung Irradiation.

The nonhuman primate, rhesus macaque, is a relevant animal model that has been used to determine the efficacy of medical countermeasures to mitigate major signs of morbidity and mortality of radiation-induced lung injury. Herein, a literature review of published studies showing the evolution of lethal lung injury characteristic of the delayed effects of acute radiation exposure between the two significantly different exposure protocols, whole thorax lung irradiation and partial-body irradiation with bone marrow sparing in the nonhuman primate, is provided. The selection of published data was m

A review of radiation countermeasures focusing on injury-specific medicinals and regulatory approval status: part III. Countermeasures under early stages of development along with 'standard of care' medicinal and procedures not requiring regulatory approval for use.

PURPOSE: Terrorist attacks, with their intent to maximize psychological and economic damage as well as inflicting sickness and death on given targeted populations, are an ever-growing worldwide concern in government and public sectors as they become more frequent, violent, and sensational. If given the chance, it is likely that terrorists will use radiological or nuclear weapons. To thwart these sinister efforts, both physical and medical countermeasures against these weapons are currently being researched and developed so that they can be utilized by the first responders, military, and medica

[Prevention and treatment of early radiation reactions of the urinary bladder in patients with cancer of the cervix and corpus uteri].

The report discusses early-onset radiation injuries in the urinary bladder of more than 1000 patients with cancer of the cervix and corpus uteri. Clinical symptoms of such injuries were observed in 487 patients (44.3%). In 47 (10%), the lesions were pronounced. The degree of radiation-induced cystitis was evaluated on a 6-point scale used by WHO classification (1982). Said lesions mainly occurred at stage III of tumor and predominantly in cases of cancer of the corpus uteri. Complications development was stimulated by vascular lesions, diabetes mellitus and inflammatory processes in pelvic org…

Identifying radiation-induced symptoms from an interview survey.

Studies on the atomic bomb have reported a relatively high incidence of acute symptoms, even at below the threshold dose of radiation, and are therefore assumed to include symptoms caused by non-radiation factors. In this study, to investigate the influence of external injuries and burns on symptom expression and the possibility of distinguishing radiation-induced symptoms, we reanalysed data from the survey conducted immediately after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of radiation per 1 Gy for the occurrence of 16 symptoms ranged from 1.14 to 1.46, based on sex, a

Determinants of Greater Peak Radiation Skin Dose in Contemporary Percutaneous Coronary Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Skin radiation injuries, especially radiation ulcers, are serious side effects caused by ionizing radiation during percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). Because skin radiation injuries are closely associated with the peak skin dose, it is important to minimize the peak skin dose. The aim of the present study was to investigate the determinants of greater peak skin dose in current PCI. METHODS: We included 707 consecutive coronary artery lesions, and divided them into an excess radiation group (n = 26; defined as peak skin dose ≥2 Gy) and a standard radiation group (n = 681; d…

Outcomes of Iatrogenic Genitourinary Injuries During Colorectal Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To describe, categorize, and determine the outcomes of repairs of genitourinary (GU) injuries that occur during colorectal surgery. Presently, little is known regarding these injuries or the long-term outcomes of their repair. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients undergoing colorectal surgery between 2003 and 2013 who experienced iatrogenic GU injuries requiring surgical repair. GU repair failures were defined as development of urine leak, urinary fistula, or anastomotic stricture requiring secondary GU intervention. Possible risk factors associated with repair

Effect of alkoxyglycerols on the frequency of fistulas following radiation therapy for carcinoma of the uterine cervix.

The incidence of injuries following radiation therapy for carcinoma of the uterine cervix is markedly decreased by the administration of alkoxyglycerols. This is the case for less harmful injuries as well as for the more severe ones, i.e. the fistulas. Recto-vaginal and vesico-vaginal fistulas are reduced with 47 per cent when alkoxyglycerols are administered prior to radiation treatment.
