The effects of daily intraperitoneal administration of (+/-)-amphetamine (AMPH: 4 mg/kg) and (-)-norpseudoephedrine (NPE: 15 or 30 mg/kg) on drinking were evaluated in rats allowed to drink water or a 5% ethanol solution during the 5 h following drug administration. Because glycine is cytoprotective for kidney cells in vitro, we investigated its possible action in vivo to protect rats against cisplatin nephrotoxicity, a well-established experimental model of renal tubular injury. Increased numbers of mast cells are commonly seen at sites of increased bone resorption and in osteoporosis. The effect of dietary zinc deficiency of two weeks duration on the synthesis of collagen and of other proteins in wounded rat mesentery was investigated 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 days after operation. A highly sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay for the determination of rat family 2 cystatins has been developed. Antibodies against cystatin were elicited in rabbits after coupling the protein to thyroglobulin. Antibodies were specific for rat family 2 cystatin and did not cross-react with human salivary cystatin, rat family 3 cystatin (kininogen) or other salivary proteins. The effect of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) concentration in the perfusate on the salivary excretion of 5-FU was investigated in the rat mandibular gland perfused with modified Ringer solution containing pilocarpine (10 microM). Male Copenhagen rats were inoculated with monodispersed R3327-MatLyLu prostate tumor cells via the tail vein under concomitant temporal occlusion of the inferior vena cava to develop an animal model for skeletal metastasis of prostate cancer. Experimental models of renal infections have been used to determine the accuracy with which the cellular and microbiologic components of ureteric and voided urine reflected the pathologic status of the kidney in pyelonephritis. It is well recognized that plasma fluctuations resulting from oral levodopa therapy may cause an unstable clinical response in parkinsonian patients. We have therefore developed a slow-release polymer matrix system that can deliver levodopa continuously for extended periods of time (at least 225 days) after subcutaneous implantation in rats. The efficacy of 32% dextran 70 (Hyskon) in the prevention of postoperative peritoneal adhesions was evaluated in nine different experiments in a total of 320 rats under standardised conditions. In summary, this study characterized the biphasic inhibition of fat cell glucose transport by the lipolytic agents caffeine and theophylline. We examined whether or not DOCA-salt treatment to rats would decrease serum ionized calcium concentrations in relation to the enhanced hypotensive response to the calcium antagonist nifedipine. DOCA-salt treatment increased blood pressure and enhanced the hypotensive effects of nifedipine.
