OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether sleep disturbances during pregnancy affect cardiac autonomic modulation in the resting state.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted of 160 pregnant women at various stages of gestation. Participants were interviewed about their sleep length per night, sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI), daytime sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale, ESS), snoring habits, and symptoms of restless legs syndrome during the previous few weeks. Cardiac autonomic modulation in the resting state was quantified by spectral analysis of heart rate variability …

Akathisia is a subjective feeling of restlessness that often results in a compulsion to move. Drug-related causes are the most common aetiologies. It can often be confused with restless legs syndrome (RLS). We describe a case of valproate-induced akathisia that improved with drug cessation. This case reports a rare but treatable adverse effect of sodium valproate and highlights the importance of differentiating akathisia from RLS.

There is abundant and still evolving scientific clinical evidence linking sleep apnea with stroke risk factors, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. Sleep apnea is a modifiable risk factor and efforts to control this condition should be pursued vigorously, particularly in patients at risk of vascular disease. Emerging evidence has also linked other sleep disorders, such as periodic limb movements of sleep and restless legs syndrome, with vascular risk.

A large number of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience nocturnal problems that impair their sleep quality. Among them, motor disorders such as tremor, rigidity, akinesia, akathisia, periodic leg movements, painful dystonia, dyskinesias, restless legs syndrome, and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder are common. This article reviews the clinical characteristics of some nocturnal motor problems that often induce sleep disruption in PD patients.

BACKGROUND: Restless arms syndrome (RAS) is a specific variant of restless legs syndrome (RLS). RAS is characterised by an uncomfortable, painful, burning or uneasy sensation confined to the arm.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of RAS with oral olanzapine, which improved with medication reduction. In addition, all reported cases of RAS were reviewed to explore the underlying mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment for psychiatric drug-induced RAS. The literature review and new case suggest that iron deficiency may be a predisposing factor for RAS. Psychiatric medications are closely associate…

Sleep disorders, especially insomnia, daytime sleepiness, sleep apnea syndrome and restless legs syndrome are very frequently encountered in patients with chronic renal failure whether or not they undergo renal replacement therapy. The causes of sleep disorders are multifactorial and not only linked to the renal disease itself, but also to its treatment and its associated psychosocial factors. This article discusses the prevalence and physiopathology of the most frequently encountered sleep disorders in chronic renal failure patients, and highlights the actually available therapeutic options.

Older patients often suffer from sleep disturbances caused by age-related physiological changes, polypharmacy, changes in circadian rhythm, retirement, and loss of spouse. Many seniors have readily diagnosed sleep disorders that can be treated to achieve improvement in daytime somnolence or cognitive impairments. After a discussion of normal age-related changes in sleep, specific sleep pathologies common in the elderly will be reviewed, including sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, advanced sleep phase syndrome, and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

Myelin protein zero (MPZ/P0) constitutes a major component of compact peripheral myelin. We report a family with a missense mutation, c.700G>T p.Asp234Tyr (deviant nomenclature: c.670G>T, p.Asp224Tyr), within the intracellular domain of myelin protein zero, who has distal sensorimotor symptoms, cramps, restless legs syndrome, neuropathic pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. The index patient responded to intravenous immunoglobulin and immunosuppression, so there may be a possible secondary autoimmune process, probably triggered by altered antigen presentation due to mutated MPZ protein.

We present the case of a patient with multiple system atrophy who presented with central apnea as the only sleep disordered breathing, associated with REM behavior disorder and restless legs syndrome. This presentation of the disease is unusual and probably reflects more widespread involvement at the onset. With this case, we show the importance of considering this kind of disease in the differential diagnosis of central sleep apnea syndromes.

INTRODUCTION: Periodic movements of the limbs (PML) whilst sleeping is a disorder included in the group of intrinsic dysomnias which cause problems of insomnia and somnolence during the day. It is usually associated with the restless legs syndrome (it occurs in 80% of the patients with this syndrome) although PML may occasionally be an isolated finding. The prevalence of the disease is of 11%. It usually occurs in patients aged over 50 years, and the frequency increase with age. It is uncommon in persons aged under 30 years. In children it is almost unknown. When it does occur in this age grou…

Daytime sleepiness is not necessarily caused by a lack of sleep. Even adequate sleep duration can be accompanied by reduced recovery during sleep. Common sleep disorders include insomnia, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and restless legs syndrome (RLS). Insomnia - disturbed sleep quality combined with impaired daytime well-being - affects up to 15% of the population, OSA 13-30% and RLS up to 10%. Diagnosis and treatment depend on the respective symptoms.

The significance for maternal and fetal health of gestational obstructive sleep apnea, primary insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy are summarized. The pathophysiology, signs, symptoms, and basic Sleep Medicine concepts that assist the obstetrician in suspecting these 4 conditions are described. Where appropriate, initial management options are also outlined. Referral guidelines to a Sleep Medicine specialist are included when further diagnostic, severity assessment, and management suggestions are needed.

Apart from tremor and restless-legs syndrome, abnormal involuntary movements are uncommon in patients with multiple sclerosis. A review of the literature in multiple sclerosis reveals case reports of a variety of other movement disorders such as myoclonus, spasmodic torticollis, paroxysmal dystonia, chorea, ballism, and parkinsonism. This chapter presents a thorough review of these movement disorders in multiple sclerosis patients and provides readers with potential underlying pathogenetic mechanisms.

Tics, stereotypies, akathisia, and restless legs fall at different places on the spectrum of discrete, unwanted and potentially disabling motor routines. Unlike tremor, chorea, myoclonus, or dystonia, this subgroup of abnormal movements is characterized by the subject's variable ability to inhibit or release undesired motor patterns on demand. Though it may be sometimes clinically challenging, it is crucial to distinguish these "unvoluntary" motor behaviors because secondary causes and management approaches differ substantially. To this end, physicians must consider the degree of repetitivenes
