The occurrence of several tick species in selected areas of Eastern Germany is described. From May 1987 till December 1989 8,472 ticks from 430 places were examined. Ixodidae of the genus Ixodes, Dermacentor and Haemaphysalis as well as Argasidae of the genus Argas were identified. The most common species was Ixodes ricinus. Furthermore, an endemic area of Dermacentor reticulatus was detected in the Düben-Dahlen and Annaburg health. Two other species of ticks, which were found frequently and sometimes with a high intensity on the host were Ixodes hexagonus and Ixodes canisuga. On the other sid…

Lectin histochemistry was investigated to identify sugar residues of the polyglucosan bodies of canine brain, spinal cord and caecum. The polyglucosan bodies in the brain and spinal cord stained with concanavalin A (ConA) but not with soybean agglutinin, wheat germ agglutinin, peanut agglutinin, Dolichos biflorus agglutinin, Ricinus communis agglutinin and Ulex europaeus agglutinin. Caecum polyglucosan bodies, however, did not stain with any of the seven lectins employed. After periodate oxidation, paradoxical ConA staining was observed in the polyglucosan bodies of the brain, spinal cord and …

Lyme disease is a process of unknown etiology that has been linked to bites of ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex. Central Minnesota is an area of known Ixodes dammini distribution. This case represents the first recognition of Lyme disease from this area. This case presented as a fluctuating meningoencephalitis with superimposed cranial neuropathy. The characteristic skin lesion, erythema chronicum migrans, was recognized by history, and oligoarticular arthritis subsequently developed. Physicians practicing in areas of known Ixodes tick distribution outside of the northeastern United States …

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Lyme borreliosis and other tick-borne diseases is increasing in Europe and North America. There is currently much interest in identifying the ecological factors that determine the density of infected ticks as this variable determines the risk of Lyme borreliosis to vertebrate hosts, including humans. Lyme borreliosis is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) and in western Europe, the hard tick Ixodes ricinus is the most important vector.
METHODS: Over a 15-year period (2004-2018), we monitored the monthly abundance of I. ricinus ticks (nym…

Ixodes scapularis and other ticks in the Ixodes ricinus complex may transmit multiple pathogens, but research on coinfections has been limited. Coinfections occur with varying frequency in ticks, but single infections are more common than dual infections. The proportion of I. scapularis or I. ricinus ticks coinfected with both Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophila is generally low, ranging from < 1% to 6% in six geographic areas. A higher prevalence of tick coinfection (26%) has been reported in Westchester County, New York. Genetic variants of the human disease-causing …

It has long been theorized that carbon allocation, in addition to the carbon source and to kinetic isotopic effects associated with a particular lipid biosynthetic pathway, plays an important role in shaping the carbon isotopic composition ((13)C/(12)C) of lipids (Park and Epstein, 1961). If the latter two factors are properly constrained, valuable information about carbon allocation during lipid biosynthesis can be obtained from carbon isotope measurements. Published work of Chikaraishi et al. (2004) showed that leaf lipids isotopic shifts from bulk leaf tissue Δδ(13)C(bk-lp) (defined as δ(13

Ticks and tick-borne diseases are on the rise throughout the world. The reasons are multifactorial but all associated with human practices, including climate change and socio-economic and eco systemic changes. In the northern hemisphere, Lyme borreliosis and its vector, the tick belonging to the Ixodes ricinus complex, are particularly studied. Changes in forestry and the expansion of certain wild ungulates since the Second World War could explain the increasing presence of this tick in our environment. As it is likely to transmit other microorganisms potentially pathogenic to humans, an integ…

Borrelia miyamotoi is a tick-borne bacterium which has only recently been identified in Europe as a human pathogen causing relapsing fever and little is known about its local impact on human health. There are three types of B. miyamotoi: Asian (Siberian), European, and American. B. miyamotoi is transmitted by the same Ixodes ricinus-persulcatus species complex, which also transmits B. burgdorferi s.l., the Lyme borreliosis group. Both Borrelia groups are mostly maintained in natural rodent populations. The aim of this review is to summarize the available literature on B. miyamotoi, with the fo…

The tick-borne encephalitis virus, a major arbovirus, is endemic in Central and Eastern Europe. Since the first case of tick-borne encephalitis observed in Alsace in 1968, there have been approximately 30 cases reported in eastern France. The tick Ixodes persulcatus (and the western subtype I. ricinus) is both the main reservoir and vector of the disease. Early clinical signs of infection are followed by a second phase complicated with meningoencephalitis. The geographical distribution of the different viral subtypes would explain the variable severity of tick-borne encephalitis. Outcome may b…

Lyme disease is a systemic illness caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted by the bite of a tick in the Ixodes ricinus complex. While the illness is often associated with a characteristic rash, erythema migrans, patients may also present with a variety of complaints in the absence of the rash. The otolaryngologist may be called upon to see both groups of patients, with any number of signs and symptoms referable to the head and neck, including headache, neck pain, odynophagia, cranial nerve palsy, head and neck dysesthesia, otalgia, tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo, temporo…

Vector-borne diseases gained importance in Germany during the past years. Borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis are already well-known infectious diseases, transmitted by Ixodes ricinus. But reports on severe diseases, formerly only known as so-called "travel sickness" from tropical countries, markedly increased in the recent years. Several climate models predict a global warming of 1.4 degrees C up to 5.8 degrees C until the year 2100, and as climate-typical temperature barriers restrict the distribution of the vectors, especially arthropod-borne diseases are strongly influenced by the clim…

Laboratory bioassays were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of permethrin-impregnated clothing against biting arthropods. Military battle dress uniforms were impregnated at a rate of 0.12-0.15 mg active ingredient (A.I.)/cm2. Gas chromatographic analysis of cloth patches treated showed that over 50% of the chemical remained after 6 cycles of washing. This amount of A.I. (0.06-0.07 mg/cm2) was effective in providing protection against Aedes aegypti and Ixodes ricinus. Mosquitoes and ticks were exposed respectively for 30 sec-3 min and 5-10 min to permethrin-impregnated uniforms: although …

A naturally occurring Tn glycoprotein (Native ASG-Tn) with GalNAc alpha 1-->Ser/Thr as the only carbohydrate side chains, has been prepared from armadillo submandibular glands. In a quantitative precipitin assay, this glycoprotein completely precipitated Maclura pomifera (MPA), Vicia villosa B4 (VVL-B4) and Artocarpus integrifolia (Jacalin, AIL). It also reacted well with Helix pomatia (HPL) and Wistaria floribunda (WFL) and precipitated over 75% of the lectin nitrogen added, but poorly with Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA1), ricin, peanut (Arachis hypogaea, PNA), Abrus precatorius agglutinin…

The abilities of lectins to combine specifically with particular carbohydrate residues have made them valuable probes in the analysis of the surface components of intestinal epithelial cells. Fluorescence microscopy studies using FITC-labeled lectins have shown that the surfaces of these cells change as the cells move up the villi and that these changes are dependent upon the region of intestine in which the villi are located. The lectins have been used in radioassays developed to quantitate these cell surface components and have proven useful in monitoring the extraction and purification of t

Borrelial pseudolymphoma, more commonly known as Borrelia lymphocytoma and previously also as lymphadenosis benigna cutis, is a rare manifestation of Lyme borreliosis, which occurs nearly always in children after an infection caused by Borrelia afzelii; this pathogen is transmitted exclusively by the Ixodes ricinus tick in our region. The most common body locations of this lymphocytoma include the earlobe, scrotum, nipples and the areomamillary complex. Therefore, the case of our patient was unexpected and quite rare. The aim of this article is to point out the high incidence of Lyme disease a…

Co-infection with Borrelia species and Anaplasma phagocytophilum or Babesia spp. was assessed in a retrospective study of tick-exposed individuals from southeastern Poland. The co-infection rate of these pathogens was found to be rather low (Borrelia spp./Anaplasma phagocytophilum--4.2%, 1/24; Borrelia spp./Babesia spp.--4.2%, 1/24). However, due to the increased prevalence of Borrelia spp. in Ixodes ricinus ticks in Poland and the recent emergence of new tick-borne infections, it is necessary to carefully evaluate the true risk of human infection with several pathogens using more sensitive an…

In this study we present the nested RT-PCR strategy designed for detection of TBEV RNA in ticks Ixodes ricinus. The presented nested RT-PCR method using 2 different primer pairs specific primers for NS5 gene provides specific TBEV cDNA detectable by electroforesis in agarose gel. Of the 177 polls of ticks investigated, TBEV RNA was detected in 14, which accounts for 7.9% of all pools. We confront the PCR results of tested ticks to routine surveillance data. The obtained results showed that the TBEV RNA is detectable in ticks collected in areas in Poland, which are defined as an non-endemic. Th…
