Many lowland regions are afflicted with high phosphorus (P) peaks in rivers during the summer months. Static incubations of sediments have shown that reductive dissolution of ferric iron (Fe(III)) minerals in the sediment explain these P peaks. Saliva of the blood feeding sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis was previously shown to inhibit the alternative pathway (AP) of the complement system. Here, we have identified Lufaxin, a protein component in saliva, as the inhibitor of the AP. The present study identified the entering and exiting sites for Lutzomyia longiflocosa in rural houses of the sub-Andean region in Colombia. BACKGROUND: Carrion' disease, caused by Bartonella bacilliformis, remains truly neglected due to its focal geographical nature. A wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, including asymptomatic bacteremia, and lack of a sensitive diagnostic test can potentially lead to a spread of the disease into non-endemic regions where competent sand fly vectors may be present. Sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) and rodents were collected in the endemic focus of urban cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sanliurfa, Turkey.
