Non-destructive identification of closely related japonica rice seeds using hyperspectral imaging combined with HHO-optimized XGBoost.

Genetically closely-related japonica rice seed varieties are difficult to distinguish using conventional identification techniques. These tr … ation rules of critical spectral bands and realize accurate, non-destructive identification of rice seeds. Five pixel statistical calculation strategies were compared, and mean spectral curves were chosen as model input data. Savitzky-Golay smoothing and Min-Max normalization were implemented to suppress spectral noise. The Successive Projections Algori …

Optimization of post-ripening treatments for efficient germination of early-harvested winter wheat seeds under speed breeding.

Speed breeding (SB) can substantially shorten crop generation cycles; however, premature harvest often results in low germination percentages due to insufficient physiological maturity. In this study, the winter wheat cultivar 'Yannong 301' was used to optimize post-harvest treatments for early-harvested seeds. Single-factor experiments showed that 20-25 days after anthesis (DAA) represented a critical window during which germination percentage surged from 34.63% to 64.67% (P< 0.01). The optimal drying temperature was 40 °C in the drying temperature experiment. In the drying duration experimen…

The use of pumpkin seeds as an alternative anthelmintic to reduce parasite burden in naturally infected lambs.

Parasite control continues to be an important management consideration for small ruminant producers worldwide because of the increased cost associated with anthelmintic treatment and the growing risk of parasite resistance to commercially available anthelmintics. As an alternative, pumpkin seeds (PS) have demonstrated anthelmintic properties in vitro that may be applied on-farm to control parasitic infection. Therefore, the objective of these experiments was to evaluate lamb growth and monitor parasite burden in lambs offered PS supplemented growing diets by measuring lamb body weight (BW), dr…

Moderate-temperature hot-air drying improves color retention in sorghum seeds: Associations with lipid and flavonoid profiles.

Postharvest drying affects sorghum seed color, but the physiological and metabolic features associated with color retention remain unclear. We compared natural sun-drying (Dn), 40 °C hot-air drying (D40), and 60 °C hot-air drying (D60) using colorimetric, physiological, biochemical, and untargeted metabolomic analyses. D40 showed the best color retention, whereas Dn caused the greatest deterioration and D60 achieved the fastest dehydration. At the final moisture content, D40 had 38.42% lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content than Dn, while superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase activities

Rapid Monitoring of Storage Deterioration in Processed Coix Seeds Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Guided by GC-IMS.

Processed coix seeds are widely consumed as both food and traditional medicinal materials, but their quality gradually deteriorates during storage due to lipid oxidation and rancid odor formation. In this study, volatile changes during storage were characterized using gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), and a rapid monitoring method based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was developed. GC-IMS identified 74 volatile compounds, with aldehydes and ketones increasing significantly during storage, indicating progressive lipid oxidation. Key markers, including 2-furaldehyde, 1…

α-Synuclein overexpression increases the tropism of pre-formed fibrils and MSA-patient derived seeds towards oligodendroglia.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare, fatal neurodegenerative disease, pathologically characterized by glial cytoplasmic inclusions (GCIs) containing α-synuclein (αSyn). The causes leading to aberrant αSyn accumulation in oligodendroglia remain unknown. Recent evidence of increased αSyn mRNA in GCI-bearing oligodendrocytes suggests that oligodendroglia αSyn expression may be a key determinant of GCI formation. To ascertain this, we generated a new transgenic (TG) mouse line overexpressing human (h-) αSyn through the myelin basic protein promoter (MBP-hSNCA mice). Immunofluorescence combined

Ovary Activation Dynamics in the Bean Weevil Zabrotes subfasciatus (Bruchinae): The Essential Roles of Seeds and Males.

Phytophagous beetles, particularly those within the superfamilies Chrysomeloidea and Curculionoidea, constitute one of the most diverse and ecologically significant groups of insect herbivores. Within this group, the subfamily Bruchinae is especially notable for its close association with leguminous plant seeds. As most Bruchinae species do not feed during the adult stage, the timing and regulation of vitellogenesis remain unclear. Previous studies suggest that vitellogenesis may be triggered by volatile organic compounds emitted by host seeds, which promote juvenile hormone (JH) synthesis. Th…

Early Alzheimer's Disease with frequent neuritic plaques harbors neocortical tau seeds distinct from primary age-related tauopathy.

Tau neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) in the presence of amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques are required for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and closely track with cognitive impairment, yet cognitively normal aged individuals frequently exhibit NFTs arising from tau seed accumulation. This may suggest that not all tau species are equally pathogenic and raises the question of whether unidentified tau modifications augment tau seeding activity and neurodegeneration in AD. We investigated how biochemical modifications of tau relate to clinicopathological outcomes in a cohort of 38 patients with Braak-

Evaluation of the Susceptibility of Lotus Seeds (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) to Aspergillus flavus Infection and Aflatoxin Contamination.

The seeds of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) have been used as significant medicinal and nutritional ingredients worldwide. The abundant proteins and polysaccharides in lotus seeds make them susceptible to contamination by aflatoxin (AF), a fungal toxic metabolite. This study was conducted to investigate the susceptibility of lotus seeds at different stages of ripening to AF contamination, as well as the mechanism of the contamination. Seven groups of lotus receptacles with seeds at different ripening stages (A-G, from immature to mature) were used for the experiment. Spores of Aspergillus fl…

Sowing "seeds of trust": How trust in normothermic regional perfusion is built in a continuum of care.

Normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) is a promising technology to improve organ transplantation outcomes by reversing ischemic injury caused by controlled donation after circulatory determination of death. However, it has not yet been implemented in Canada due to ethical questions. These issues must be resolved to preserve public trust in organ donation and transplantation. This qualitative, constructivist grounded theory study sought to understand how those most impacted by NRP perceived the ethical implications. We interviewed 29 participants across stakeholder groups of donor families, org
