The wounded self: new approach to understanding and treating anxiety disorders.

This article synthesizes the concept of "wounded self" in the understanding and psychological treatment of anxiety disorders. The focal point of this concept is the notion of self-wounds or early unresolved emotional injuries. According to this conceptualization, anxiety represents an unconscious fear of unbearable insult to the wounded self, which is protected by maladaptive conscious strategies such as avoidance, cognitive distortions, or emotional constriction. This perspective provides a theoretical basis for blending elements of psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and experiential thera

A multi-faceted approach to the study of the relationship between self-esteem and the self-prioritization effect.

A key aspect of self-referential processing is that self-related stimuli tend to receive preferential processing in several cognitive domains. The so-called matching task has been introduced to quantify this bias by means of arbitrary self-other associations, aimed to minimize potential confounds related to stimulus familiarity. In this paradigm, participants learn associations between neutral shapes and social labels (e.g., self vs. stranger) and then perform a perceptual matching task. The self-prioritization effect (SPE) refers to the observation that participants are faster and more accura

Differential impacts of bullying and sexual violence on girls' self-esteem in Nigeria: the buffering role of social support.

BACKGROUND: School-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) poses serious risks to adolescent girls' safety, learning, and mental health. This study assessed whether perceived social support - from family, friends, and significant others - buffers the negative effects of bullying and sexual violence on girls' self-esteem in Nigeria. METHODS: Using data from 5,936 secondary schoolgirls (aged 15-20 years) drawn from the Adolescent Girls' Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project, we employed multilevel linear models with random intercepts for schools to test the direct (main) effects

Who "Feels Sexy" in the Google Books Corpus? Text-Mining Evidence for Gender Differences in Object of Desire Self-Consciousness.

Object of desire self-consciousness (ODSC), a perception of one's own romantic and/or sexual desirability, may play a more important role in women's than in men's sociosexuality, including in their language of sexual communication. We examined whether sexual phrases indicative of ODSC themes referred to, and were expressed by, women more than men using a corpus approach to language in a large database of books. Specifically, variations of the phrase "feel sexy" were examined because this language has been argued to capture a perception of one's desirability but also often indicates an arousal

Post-traumatic growth following spinal cord injury: a systematic review and meta-ethnography.

PURPOSE: Research shows the potential for post-traumatic growth (PTG) following spinal cord injury (SCI). Growing evidence demonstrates the role of social processes in PTG development. However, the mechanisms through which social processes might influence PTG are not well established. The review aimed to synthesise current research to provide insights into social processes involved in PTG development following SCI. METHODS: Searches were conducted using the following databases: PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Scopus, Citation Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, and EMBASE. Nine

Linear self-acceptance and nonlinear social comparison: interacting influences on adolescent depression.

BACKGROUND: This research builds on the understanding that low self-acceptance is an important feature of adolescent depression, and that social comparison is a critical factor in self-concept formation during adolescence. However, there are gaps in our understanding of their interactive effects and the non-linear features between these factors in influencing adolescent depression. AIM: The study attempts to test two main hypotheses: (1) increased levels of self-acceptance will correlate with reduced depressive symptoms and moderate the negative effects of social comparison on depression; and

[Group Psychotherapy Focused on the Domain in the Emotional and Personality Domain in Adolescents with Schizophrenic Spectrum Disorders].

The narrative review describes modern ideas about the structural and dynamic features and disorders of the emotional and personal sphere in adolescents with schizophrenic spectrum disorders, and proves the therapeutic potential of group psychotherapy in the treatment of these disorders. The relevance of addressing emotional and personal deficits in adolescents is due to their impact on their social adjustment, the development of coping strategies, and the overall quality of life. The complexity of psychotherapy is due to a combination of immaturity and vulnerability of the emotional and person

The rehabilitation management of sexuality and fertility issues in people with disabling health conditions.

Sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality. Disabling health conditions can impact sexual function, identity, self-esteem and self-image, fertility and pregnancy. People can experience primary impairments such as a loss of sensibility or erectile dysfunction, but also consequences of secondary impairments like incontinence, pain, fatigue, or spasticity. Moreover, limitations of activities and participation restrictions can impact intimacy, sexuality and reproduction. Therefore, sexual issues should be an integral part of quality rehab

The Role of Identity Formation in Explaining Dynamic Risk Factors Among Incarcerated Emerging Adults.

Emerging adulthood is increasingly acknowledged as a discrete developmental stage with its own specific challenges. Identity formation is a major development task during emerging adulthood, yet its relationship to dynamic risk factors remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between identity diffusion and dynamic risk factors in a sample of young, incarcerated adults. The study involved 99 males between ages of 18 and 23, serving custodial sentences in four Lithuanian prisons. Zero-order correlations showed significant relationships between the length of the

Effects of self-similarity and self-generation on the perceptual prioritization of voices.

The self-prioritization effect (SPE) reflects the ability to efficiently discern self-relevant information. The self-voice emerges as a crucial identity marker because of its inherent self-relevance, and previous work has demonstrated the perceptual and cognitive advantages of the self-voice over other voices. Yet, the extent to which humans prioritize their self-voice when they hear it is because it is both self-similar ("That sounds like my voice") and self-generated ("I said that") remains understudied. Here, we examined the impacts of self-similarity and self-generation on the SPE through

Performance of Femininity as the Potential Determinant of Lower Well-Being Among Adolescent Girls in London, UK: An Exploratory Discourse Analysis.

In the UK, girls are consistently found to have lower subjective well-being and higher rates of anxiety disorders/depression compared to boys. While the reasons for these gender disparities are complex, how girls conceptualize, experience, and "perform" femininity may be one pathway which exacerbates psychological stress. To explore this hypothesis, we conducted an in-depth exploratory study to examine how norms and experiences of femininity among seven adolescent girls aged 16-17 from London, England (external factors), relate to their behaviors and psychological experiences (internal factors

Female Autoandrophilia.

A growing body of research suggests that males can have internalized sexualities such as autogynephilia (sexual attraction to the thought or image of oneself as female) which lead to the development of trans identity. Here I present evidence that females can have analogous internalized sexualities such as autoandrophilia (sexual attraction to the thought or image of oneself as male) which similarly lead to the development of trans identity. The case for female autoandrophilia presented here uses both direct and indirect lines of evidence. Female autoandrophilia is directly evidenced by cross-g

Association between Pathological Narcissism and Emotion Dysregulation: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Pathological narcissism (PN) can be defined as the compromised and fluctuating ability to regulate self-esteem, the latter depending on external validation, admiration, or enhancement, all resulting in grandiose (e.g., self-enhancement, aggressiveness, manipulation) or vulnerable (e.g., depression, anxiety, self-criticism, avoidance) dysfunctional reactions when confronting with self-esteem threats. A link has been suggested between PN and emotion dysregulation (ED), but to date, no systematic review has been conducted. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the literature

Psychosocial impact of alopecia areata in paediatric and adolescent populations: A systematic review.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder characterised by sudden hair loss, and can range from patchy baldness to more severe forms such as alopecia totalis and universalis. Hair loss can have a profound impact on self-esteem and body image, particularly during childhood and adolescence. Understanding the psychosocial impact of alopecia areata in paediatric and adolescent populations is crucial to address the emotional and social challenges faced by these patients. The aim is to review the existing literature for clinical studies and reports investigating the psychosocial impact of alopecia a

Mediating Effect of Perceived Personal Luck in the Relationship Between Narcissism and Problem Gambling in Strategic Gamblers: An Exploratory Study.

Gambling is becoming increasingly frequent among the French population, which has led to an increased number of individuals exhibiting problematic gambling patterns. Studies have found links between narcissism and cognitive distortions in relation to problem gambling, specifically among strategic gamblers, but none has tested perceived personal luck as one type of cognitive distortion in this regard. This study's purpose was to explore the relationship between narcissism, perceived personal luck and problem gambling among strategic gamblers, and to test for the mediating role of perceived pers

Like yourself, and others will follow: The role of target self-esteem in the association between being seen accurately and being liked in platonic and romantic first impressions.

When meeting people for the first time, we often strive to perceive others and express our own personalities accurately. Does this benefit social connection by promoting greater perceiver liking of targets, or might it instead hinder liking for some targets and in some contexts? In the present studies, we examined whether the links between accuracy and perceiver liking differ as a function of target self-esteem across two first impression contexts: a speed-dating context (N = 378, N = 4,797 dyads) and a platonic getting-acquainted context (exploratory sample: N = 557, N = 2,924 dyads; preregis

Self-compassion promotes positive mental health in women with anorexia nervosa: A two-week daily diary study.

Despite the importance of positive mental health, little is known about its facilitators in people with eating disorders (EDs). Drawing on past research, we hypothesized that self-compassion might be a contributing factor to positive mental health in individuals with EDs. In a two-week daily diary study of women (N = 32) with anorexia nervosa, we investigated whether self-compassion levels-on average, on a given day, and from one day to the next-predicted social safeness (i.e. a sense of social connection and warmth) and positive affect, both indicators of positive mental health. Multilevel mo
