Acute injuries in male elite ice hockey players. A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In Finland, elite level ice hockey injury studies have not been conducted since 1990s. Epidemiological data is needed for developing injury prevention. The aim of this study was to calculate the injury incidences and to describe details of the injuries in the men's elite-level ice hockey league in Finland (Liiga). METHODS: During the three seasons of 2017-2020, injuries from eight Liiga teams were documented by team physicians to a digitalized injury-reporting system. All acute injuries requiring medical attention or causing a player's time loss were reported. Injury incidences we

Shoulder pain in acute traumatic quadriplegia.

Fifty two patients with traumatic quadriplegia admitted to a spinal cord injury program within 6 months of injury were studied retrospectively. Seventy five per cent had shoulder pain documented in their medical records during initial rehabilitation, and 60% had shoulder pain for 2 weeks or more. When shoulder pain was documented it was bilateral in 61% of the cases. Age greater than 50 years, decreased shoulder range of motion, and not receiving shoulder exercise during the first 2 weeks after injury were positive risk factors associated with the onset of shoulder pain. At discharge 42% of th

Prevalence of neurologic lesions after total shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Clinically evident neurologic injury of the involved limb after total shoulder arthroplasty is not uncommon, but the subclinical prevalence is unknown. The purposes of this prospective study were to determine the subclinical prevalence of neurologic lesions after reverse shoulder arthroplasty and anatomic shoulder arthroplasty, and to evaluate the correlation of neurologic injury to postoperative lengthening of the arm. METHODS: All patients undergoing either a reverse or an anatomic shoulder arthroplasty were included during the period studied. This study focused on the clinical,

Initial kinematic chain injuries increase hazard of subsequent arm injuries in professional baseball pitchers.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there are few studies that have evaluated the relationship between a lower extremity or trunk injury (kinematic chain) and subsequent arm injury. The purpose of this study was (1) to investigate the relationship between initial kinematic chain (lower extremity or trunk) injury and subsequent arm injury; and (2) to investigate the relationship between initial shoulder or elbow injury and subsequent arm injury. METHODS: A 7-year prospective injury risk study was conducted with Minor League Baseball pitchers. Pitches, pitching appearances, athlete exposures (AEs), and arm

Rugby injuries.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this chapter is to review critically the existing studies on the epidemiology of pediatric rugby injuries and discuss suggestions for injury prevention and further research. DATA SOURCES: Data were sourced from the sports medicine and science literature mainly since 1990, and from a prospective injury surveillance project in rugby undertaken by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney during 2002. Literature searches were performed using Medline and SportsDiscus. MAIN RESULTS: Reported injury rates were between 7 and 18 injuries per 1,000 hours played, wi

The epidemiology of 1345 shoulder dislocations and subluxations in French Rugby Union players: a five-season prospective study from 2008 to 2013.

BACKGROUND: An understanding of the epidemiology of shoulder dislocation/subluxation in rugby union players could help develop targeted prevention programmes and treatment. We performed a multiyear epidemiological survey of shoulder dislocation/subluxation in a large cohort of rugby players. METHODS: A descriptive epidemiological study was performed prospectively for five playing seasons (2008-2013) in all players licensed in the French Rugby Union. Rugby players were categorised into five groups by age. The player and the team physician reported the injury to the club insurance company if it

Management of the First-time Traumatic Anterior Shoulder Dislocation.

Traumatic anterior dislocation of the shoulder is one of the most common directions of instability following a traumatic event. Although the incidence of shoulder dislocation is similar between young and elderly patients, most studies have traditionally focused on young patients due to relatively high rates of recurrent dislocations in this population. However, shoulder dislocations in older patients also require careful evaluation and treatment selection because they can lead to persistent pain and disability due to rotator cuff tears and nerve injuries. This article provides an overview of t

Arthroscopic Subscapularis Release and External Rotation Tendon Transfer for Brachial Plexus Birth Palsy: Surgical Technique.

Patients with brachial plexus birth injuries commonly develop problems at the shoulder. These problems include posterior subluxation of the shoulder, internal rotation contractures, and weakness of external rotation. The most common technique for the treatment of these is the release of the shoulder joint, the release of the internal rotators, and the transfer of latissimus teres and teres major tendons. In this article, we present a detailed technique with an accompanying step-by-step video to demonstrate how to perform these procedures.

Upper Extremity Musculoskeletal Characteristics and the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic Questionnaire Score in Collegiate Baseball Athletes.

CONTEXT: Upper extremity (UE) musculoskeletal injuries are common in baseball athletes due to the increased demand placed on the UE. The link between risk factors for UE musculoskeletal injuries and baseball athletes' perceived UE function and pain, as measured by the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic (KJOC) questionnaire, is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To (1) describe the musculoskeletal characteristics of the UE (posture, range of motion, flexibility, and isometric strength) in a population of baseball athletes and (2) determine the predictive capability of UE musculoskeletal characteristics for the K

What Are the Predictors of Poor Patient-Reported Outcomes After Shoulder Instability Surgery?

BACKGROUND: Prospectively collected responses to Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS) questions after shoulder instability surgery are limited. Responses to these outcome measures are imperative to understanding their clinical utility. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate which factors predict unfavorable patient-reported outcomes after shoulder instability surgery, including "no" to the PASS question. We hypothesized that poor outcomes would be associated with male adolescents, bone loss, combined labral tears, and articular cartilage injuries. STUDY DESIGN: Coho

Biceps tendon disorders in athletes.

It has been proposed that the long head of the biceps functions as a humeral head depressor and stabilizer. In addition, in many overhead sports, the biceps helps to accelerate and decelerate the arm. With improper training or fatigue, inordinate stresses can be placed on the biceps as it attempts to compensate for other muscles. This can lead to attrition and failure, either within the tendon substance or at its origin. Bicipital problems in athletes usually occur in conjunction with other types of shoulder disorders, such as rotator cuff impingement and glenohumeral instability, making deter

Treatment of glenohumeral instability in rugby players.

Rugby is a high-impact collision sport, with impact forces. Shoulder injuries are common and result in the longest time off sport for any joint injury in rugby. The most common injuries are to the glenohumeral joint with varying degrees of instability. The degree of instability can guide management. The three main types of instability presentations are: (1) frank dislocation, (2) subluxations and (3) subclinical instability with pain and clicking. Understanding the exact mechanism of injury can guide diagnosis with classical patterns of structural injuries. The standard clinical examination in…
