Intra-abdominal desmoid tumor.

Intra-abdominal desmoid tumors are known to be associated with familial polyposis coli, but have not been previously described in association with carcinoma of the sigmoid colon. This is a case report of a patient with intra-abdominal desmoid tumor associated with carcinoma of the sigmoid colon which manifested as a small-bowel obstruction. This appears to be the first case of its kind reported.

[Laparoscopic sigmoid resection in total situs inversus].

Total situs inversus (SIT) is a rare congenital disorder in which all abdominal and thoracic organs are in reversed position. A 57-year-old man with SIT presented with change in bowel habits and rectal bleeding.Colonoscopy and abdomino-pelvic CT scan confirmed a constricting sigmoid lesion with normal tumor-marker levels. In our department the elective laparoscopic colon resection with lymphadenectomy is the preferred alternative of open surgery and is the chosen method in about 60 percent of cases. This is the first documented case report in Hungarian of a laparoscopically resected sigmoid tu

[COMPLETE RESECTION OF URACHAL CARCINOMA WITH SIGMOID COLON INVASION AFTER FOLFOX CHEMOTHERAPY: A CASE REPORT].

A 45-years-old man presented discharge of abscess from the umbilicus with lower abdominal pain. CT scan showed huge tumor from the bladder to the umbilical part with sigmoid colon invasion. He was diagnosed as urachal carcinoma, which was confirmed by pathological examination. We started FOLFOX chemotherapy according to advanced colon cancer. Approximately 80% of reduction was accomplished after 11 courses of FOLFOX. We performed radical cystectomy with sigmoid colon resection. Pathological examination revealed complete resection with negative surgical margin. No recurrence and metastasis were

Results of a standardized technique and postoperative care plan for laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy: a 30-month experience.

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy has been accepted slowly despite potential advantages because of the perceptions of a steep learning curve and increased operative times and costs. The purpose of this article is to review the outcome of a standardization of all the intraoperative and postoperative processes used in our department for the performance of laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy. METHODS: A consecutive series of patients requiring laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy from March 1999 through December 2001 at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, was analyzed. Patients req

The surgical treatment of radiation injuries after radiotherapy for uterine carcinoma.

The outcome of serious radiation injuries to the pelvic viscera in 400 patients treated by radiotherapy for carcinoma of the uterus between January 1974 and December 1978 has been reviewed. Twenty-eight instances of serious radiation damage have been found, 13 of predominantly small bowel damage, 11 of predominantly large bowel damage and 4 of bladder damage. Many patients had involvement at multiple sites. Fourteen patients have died, and 9 survivors have artificial abdominal stomas. Leaking anastomoses and progressive sepsis were major problems in the postoperative period and could be relate

Laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer with persistent descending mesocolon.

BACKGROUND: Persistent descending mesocolon (PDM) is caused by the absence of fusion of the descending colon to the retroperitoneum. We herein report two colorectal cancer cases with PDM that were treated with laparoscopic surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1: a 50-year-old man with sigmoid colon cancer and synchronous liver metastasis. After neoadjuvant chemotherapy, he underwent laparoscopic sigmoidectomy with lymph node dissection cutting the root of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) and synchronous liver resection. He experienced postoperative stenosis of the reconstructed colon possibly

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma of the sigmoid colon.

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a rare soft tissue tumor with a slight male predominance. The tumor has a tendency to arise from deep soft tissue of the trunk and lower extremities. Rare cases are reported to arise from the mediastinal and retroperitoneal areas. Its deceptively bland histologic appearance makes this tumor difficult to diagnose. Also, there are several histologic mimics that may hinder in its diagnosis. We report a case of low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma from a 48-year-old woman, first documented herein to arise from the sigmoid. We also report the value of CD99, BCL2 an

Progress in sigmoidectomy for cancer during the last 24 years in our department.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: In the treatment for colon cancer, changes may have taken place in areas such as surgical devices, concepts for basic strategies, composition of the medical team, postoperative management and adjuvant chemotherapy. No one knows the net effect of these alterations in treatment on sigmoid colon cancer patients. METHODOLOGY: A total of 147 patients were divided into 2 groups based upon the time of the surgery. Comparisons were made based upon the several parameters, including survival. In addition, to determine the effect of the degree of lymph node dissection on survival, patie

Seizure-Induced Transient Early Venous Visualization on Angiography in Glioblastoma: A Case Report.

OBJECTIVE: We report a case of seizure-associated transient early venous visualization (EVV) on cerebral angiography in a patient with glioblastoma mimicking arteriovenous shunting pathology. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old woman presented with new-onset generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Brain MRI revealed a poorly demarcated, non-enhancing lesion in the left temporal lobe. Arterial spin labeling (ASL) demonstrated marked hyperperfusion within the lesion and adjacent venous sinuses. Cerebral angiography performed approximately 2 h following seizure cessation showed posterior temporal artery

[Hypermucinous and goblet cell-deficient, IBD-associated, non-conventional dysplasia besides colorectal adenocarcinoma].

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are twice as likely to develop colorectal carcinoma as the general population. In addition to invasive malignancy, these patients are also more likely to develop dysplasia, as well. In recent years, several subtypes of the so-called IBD-associated, non-conventional dysplasias have been identified, and the amount of information about these laesions show an increasing tendency, due to the many ongoing investigations. We present the case of a 62-year-old woman, diagnosed and treated with relapsing ulcerative colitis for 14 years. In the patient’s sub

Colorectal neoplasm detection using virtual colonoscopy: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Virtual colonoscopy is a potentially powerful tool for non-invasive colorectal evaluation. In vitro studies have established its accuracy in simulated polyp detection but little data exist regarding its use in clinical practice. AIMS: To evaluate the ability of virtual colonoscopy to detect colorectal cancers and polyps in patients with endoscopically proven colorectal neoplasms and to correlate the findings of virtual colonoscopy with those of conventional colonoscopy, surgery, and histopathology. PATIENTS: Thirty eight patients with endoscopic findings suggestive of colorectal

Frequent and characteristic K-ras activation in aberrant crypt foci of colon. Is there preference among K-ras mutants for malignant progression?

BACKGROUND: To investigate very early lesion of colorectal cancer, K-ras activation and nuclear p53 accumulation were studied in aberrant crypt focus (ACF). METHODS: ACF were microscopically identified in grossly normal mucosa of patients with colorectal cancer who underwent surgery. Each ACF was microdissected from the surgical specimen and divided into two pieces, one for histologic and immunohistochemical examinations and the other for K-ras activation. K-ras mutations in codons 12 and 13 were sequenced after being screened by polymerase chain reaction amplification followed by restriction
