Rhabdomyoblastic differentiation in a leiomyosarcoma of the retroperitoneum.

A case of leiomyosarcoma of the retroperitoneum with rhabdomyoblastic areas which developed in a 59-year-old woman is reported. The tumor was composed mostly of spindle cells immunoreactive with desmin and smooth muscle actin antisera. In the lesion there were no fewer than five patches constituted by large pleomorphic elements which reacted with antidesmin, sarcomeric actin and myoglobin antisera. These dual features were interpreted as the result of a divergent differentiation of neoplastic cells.

Case report of lumbar intradural capillary hemangioma.

BACKGROUND: Capillary hemangioma is a rare tumor in spinal intradural location. Despite the rarity, early recognition is important because of the risk of hemorrhage. This is a case report of a woman who had capillary hemangioma of cauda equina. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 54 -year-old woman presented with a low backache, radiating to the left leg for 2 months. She had left extensor hallucis weakness, sensory impairment in left L5 dermatome, and mild tenderness in lower lumbar spine. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) LS spine showed L4/5 intradural tumor, completely occluding canal in myelogram, enhanc

[Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) of the liver: a case report and review of the literature].

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is rare entity and has been described only recently. By immunohistochemistry and genetics it belongs to the family of tumours which comprises angiomyolipoma, clear cell "sugar" tumor of lung, lymphangioleiomyomatosis and clear cell myomelanotic tumor of ligamentum falciforme/teres hepatis. We describe an unusual case of hepatic PEComa arising in a 55-year-old woman with previous history of glioblastoma. Histologically the tumor grew in expansive way, and was composed of clear and eosinophilic epithelioid cels, without vascular or lipomatous componen

Soft tissue perineurioma of the tongue: report of a case and review of the literature.

Perineurioma is a rare benign tumor of the peripheral nervous system distinct from schwannomas and neurofibromas. It may be intraneural or extraneural (in the soft tissue). Extraneural soft tissue perineuriomas are uncommon; rare cases have been reported in the oral cavity. We present a case of soft tissue perineurioma in the tip of the tongue. The tumor was characterized by slender spindle cells, arranged in short fascicles or whorls, and focal areas showing a distinct storiform pattern. Tumor cells showed the immunohistochemical profile of perineurial cells, including epithelial membrane ant

Clinical and pathological status of mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body. A case report and review of the literature.

The case of a 28-year-old woman with a well-vascularized, yellowish neoplasm in her right eye is reported. The findings upon slit-lamp examination and fluorescein iridography strongly suggested a malignant lesion. The tumor and the adjacent portion of the iris, angle structures, ciliary body, cornea, and sclera were removed en bloc under the half-thickness corneoscleral flap. On the basis of light-microscopic studies, the tumor was suspected to be a neurogenic or glial tumor but further studies confirmed it to be a mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body. Electron-microscopic studies revea

Berberine inhibits Chlamydia pneumoniae infection-induced vascular smooth muscle cell migration through downregulating MMP3 and MMP9 via PI3K.

The mechanisms by which Chlamydia pneumoniae infection promote vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) migration required in the development of atherosclerosis have not yet been fully clarified. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have important roles in VSMC migration. However, it is still unknown whether MMPs are involved in C. pneumoniae infection-induced VSMC migration. In addition, whether berberine can exert its inhibitory effects on the infection-induced VSMC migration also remains unclear. Accordingly, we investigated the effects of berberine on C. pneumoniae infection-induced VSMC migration a

Vaginal vault leiomyoma: 25 years after total abdominal hysterectomy.

Leiomyomas are benign, mesenchymal, monoclonal tumors that typically originate from myometrium smooth-muscle cells, although atypical sites such as the vagina, lungs, vascular structures, and retroperitoneal area have been reported. We present the case of a leiomyoma that originated from the vaginal cuff in a 70-year-old woman, 25 years after total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salphingo-oophorectomy.

Malignant plexiform tumor of the uterus: an unusual variant of epithelioid leiomyosarcoma.

A 46-year-old woman with the complaint of hypermenorrhea underwent hysterectomy for a presumed uterine myoma. The solid tumor in the myometrium was gray in color, was 4 cm in diameter, and showed hemorrhage and necrosis. Histologically, the tumor consisted of round or polygonal cells arranged in cords and nests, and its histological features closely resembled those of plexiform tumor which has been reported as a benign, epithelioid smooth muscle tumor of the uterus. In the tumor in our patient, however, mild nuclear atypia and two to three mitoses/10 high-power fields were present. Two months …

Tumor Necrosis Factor/Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Signaling Augments Resistance Artery Myogenic Tone in Diabetes.

Diabetes strongly associates with microvascular complications that ultimately promote multiorgan failure. Altered myogenic responsiveness compromises tissue perfusion, aggravates hypertension, and sets the stage for later permanent structural changes to the microcirculation. We demonstrate that skeletal muscle resistance arteries isolated from patients with diabetes have augmented myogenic tone, despite reasonable blood glucose control. To understand the mechanisms, we titrated a standard diabetes mouse model (high-fat diet plus streptozotocin [HFD/STZ]) to induce a mild increase in blood gluc

Exophytic pedunculated gastrointestinal stromal tumor with remarkable cystic change.

A 59-year-old man with bloody stools, and previously diagnosed with sigmoid colon carcinoma, visited our hospital. Preoperative abdominal ultrasonography (US) showed another tumor, with an uneven irregular surface, measuring about 9 x 5 cm, below the left hypochondrium. The tumor consisted of several cysts. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed a multicystic tumor attached to the stomach, and its septum and marginal region were intensely stained on contrast imaging. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), low and markedly high signals were revealed in the tumor on T1-weighted and T2-weighted

[Pathology of soft tissue sarcomas].

Soft tissue sarcomas comprise around 1% of all malignant tumors, but they are relatively more frequent in childhood and adolescence. This latter fact emphasizes the need that timely diagnosis should be established for optimal treatment. The very recent WHO classification (2013) lays down the following main categories: adipocyte tumors, fibroblast/myofibroblast tumors, so-called fibrohistiocyte tumors, smooth-muscle tumors, pericyte tumors, skeletal-muscle tumors, vascular tumors, chondro-osseous tumors, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, nerve sheath tumors, tumors of uncertain differentiation a

Myosin heavy chain isoform expression in human myometrium: presence of an embryonic nonmuscle isoform in leiomyomas and in cultured cells.

We had previously found no myosin heavy chain (MHC) changes in expression during pregnancy in human myometrium. In the present work, we compared the MHC pattern of expression in normal human myometrium, pregnant and non-pregnant, to that in benign tumors of the uterine musculature and in cultured myometrial cells. We used a high-resolution gel electrophoretic system and monoclonal antibodies directed against smooth muscle and nonmuscle MHCs. Smooth muscle MHCs (SM1, 204 kDa, and SM2, 200 kDa, MHCs) and a nonmuscle MHC of 196 kDa (NM MHC) were detected in pregnant and nonpregnant human myometri

CXCL12 is expressed by skeletal muscle cells in tongue oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The CXCL12/CXCR4 axis plays a pivotal role in the progression of various malignancies, including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In this study, we aimed to clarify the biological and clinical significance of CXCL12 in the tumor microenvironment of OSCCs. METHODS: Publicly available single-cell RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) datasets were used to analyze CXCL12 expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). Immunohistochemical analysis of CXCL12, α-smooth muscle antigen (α-SMA), fibroblast activation protein (FAP) and CD8 was performed in a series of 47 surgically res

Smooth muscle tumour of uncertain malignant potential (SMTUMP) in the nasal cavity: an incidental finding.

Sino-nasal smooth muscle tumours of uncertain malignant potential (SMTUMP) are very rare neoplasms of mesenchymal origin with features in between a benign leiomyoma and a leiomyosarcoma. We report a rare case of SMTUMP in a 44-year-old woman, who presented with vague symptoms of pharyngitis. Nasal endoscopy revealed a smooth mass in left nasal cavity. Contrast-enhanced CT and MRI scans showed features likely to be inverted papilloma or olfactory neuroblastoma or meningioma. Excision was planned and intraoperatively, frozen section revealed a probable spindle cell lesion. Final histopathologica

Recurrent cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma of the uterus.

Cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle neoplasm with an unusual growth pattern that is characterized by intramural dissection within the uterine corpus and often a placental-like appearance macroscopically in its extrauterine component that may be alarming to the surgeon. All cases reported to date have been nonaggressive. We report a case in a 33-yr-old woman who had a history of prolonged uterine bleeding. She was operated upon for uterine leiomyomas, and the diagnosis of cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma was made at the time of intraoperative consultation. To maintain f

Epithelioid angiomyolipoma of the ovary: a case report and literature review.

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm that mainly occurs in the kidney either sporadically or in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Extrarenal AML is uncommon. We describe a 39-year-old female with a history of TSC and bilateral multicentric renal AML who presented with a persistent cystic ovarian mass that fluctuated in size during 2 years of ultrasonographic observation before its removal by salpingo-oophorectomy. The 4.5-cm mass was solid and cystic and tan-yellow. Microscopic examination showed an admixture of epithelioid cells, smooth muscle bundles, large thi

Tissue-specific renin-angiotensin system in pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), a multisystem disease found in middle-aged women, is characterized by cystic lung destruction and abdominal tumors (e.g., angiomyolipomas, lymphangioleimyomas), resulting from proliferation of abnormal-appearing, smooth muscle-like cells (LAM cells). The LAM cells, in combination with other cells, form nodular structures within the lung interstitium and in the walls of the cysts. LAM cells contain mutations in the tuberous sclerosis complex TSC1 and/or TSC2 genes, which lead to dysregulation of the mammalian target of rapamycin, affecting cell growth and prolife

Urethral leiomyoma mimicking urethral diverticulum: a rare case report and brief literature review.

BACKGROUND: Urethral leiomyoma is an uncommon benign smooth-muscle tumor that typically affects women of reproductive age and presents with lower urinary tract symptoms or a periurethral mass. Preoperative misclassification as urethral diverticulum or Skene's gland disease is frequent because clinical and imaging features overlap. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can suggest a solid periurethral mass and delineate its relation to the urethral lumen and sphincter, definitive diagnosis requires surgical excision with histopathologic confirmation. This case is noteworthy because a mid-ur
