Social Support and the Association Between Certain Forms of Violence and Harassment and Suicidal Ideation Among Transgender Women - National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Among Transgender Women, Seven Urban Areas, United States, 2019-2020.

Violence and harassment toward transgender women are associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and social support might moderate such association. This analysis explored the association between certain forms of violence and harassment and suicidal ideation and moderation by social support. Better understanding of these associations could guide mental health services and structural interventions appropriate to lived experiences of transgender women. This cross-sectional analysis used data from CDC's National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Among Transgender Women. During 2019-2020, transgend

Understandings of participation in daily activity services among people with intellectual disabilities: A pedagogical sociocultural perspective.

This study sought to explore different understandings of participation in daily activity services among people with intellectual disabilities. Using a pedagogical sociocultural perspective, the research focused on individuals' perspectives and understandings as well as their account of social interaction, working and learning. In all, 17 people working in daily activity services were interviewed once, and, of these, 14 were interviewed a second time. Using qualitative content analysis, two themes and three categories were singled out. The results show that participation can be understood in tw…

Presence of a home cage running wheel, but not wheel running per se, decreases social motivation in adult C57BL/6J female mice.

Physical activity offers myriad benefits to health and well-being, in humans and other animals as well. In rodents, voluntary wheel running can attenuate the effects of both physical and social stressors on rodent social behavior. Whether wheel running affects rodent social behaviors per se remains less well understood. We conducted the current study to test whether home cage access to running wheels impacts the social behaviors of adult, group-housed C57BL/6J female mice during same-sex interactions with novel females. Group-housed females were either given continuous home cage running wheel

Loss of Social/Non-social Context Discrimination by Movement Acceleration in the Valproate Model of Autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental alteration characterized by social/communicative deficits, repetitive/stereotyped movements, and restricted/obsessive interests. However, there is not much information about whether movement alterations in ASD comprise modifications at the basic kinematic level, such as trajectory and velocity, which may contribute to the higher level of processing that allows the perception and interpretation of actions performed by others, and hence, impact social interaction. In order to further explore possible motor alterations in ASD, we analyzed mov…

Association of Social Support With Brain Volume and Cognition.

IMPORTANCE: Cognitive resilience refers to the general capacity of cognitive processes to be less susceptible to differences in brain structure from age- and disease-related changes. Studies suggest that supportive social networks reduce Alzheimer disease and related disorder (ADRD) risk by enhancing cognitive resilience, but data on specific social support mechanisms are sparse. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of individual forms of social support with a global neuroanatomical measure of early ADRD vulnerability and cognition. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cros

The social brain in psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Psychiatric and neurological disorders have historically provided key insights into the structure-function relationships that subserve human social cognition and behavior, informing the concept of the 'social brain'. In this review, we take stock of the current status of this concept, retaining a focus on disorders that impact social behavior. We discuss how the social brain, social cognition, and social behavior are interdependent, and emphasize the important role of development and compensation. We suggest that the social brain, and its dysfunction and recovery, must be understood not in ter

A categorical analysis of the social attributions of learning-disabled children.

The social attributions of learning-disabled and control children with either similar or higher social acceptance ratings were assessed within an open-ended interview format. In addition, measures of social self-esteem and expectation of social success were obtained. The learning-disabled group used luck more frequently and personality interaction less frequently as explanations for social outcomes than did the other two groups. Learning-disabled children also had the lowest expectation of social success and, like the low acceptance group, had a poorer social self-image. Possible explanations

How to express social presence: a comparison of perceptions of social robots' cognitive abilities.

In light of the problems posed by an aging society and the associated challenges-particularly regarding the care and support of older citizens-questions arise concerning technological solutions. Social robots equipped with appropriate cognitive abilities can provide support in this area by reducing loneliness and social isolation through communication and personalized interaction. To this end, the robot's perceived social presence is of crucial importance. Social presence (or co-presence) refers to the sense of being with another person and depends on how easily one feels able to access that p

The virtual disengagement hypothesis: A neurophysiological framework for reduced empathy on social media.

Social media is a hotbed of interpersonal conflict and aggression. Platforms such as Twitter and Instagram are used by more than 62% of the global population, facilitating billions of user interactions every day. However, many of these exchanges involve hostile, insensitive, and antisocial behaviors. This raises the question: is empathy blunted on social media? Substantial evidence demonstrates that humans tend to behave more rudely in virtual settings, but considering the scarcity of physiological data collected under these circumstances, it remains unclear how the neural systems guiding soci

Interleukin-6 moderates the relationship between social support, strain, and future depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation has been increasingly implicated in major depressive disorder (MDD), with interleukin-6 (IL-6) emerging as a key biomarker. How this relates to psychosocial risk factors, such as social support and strain, remains underexplored. IL-6 levels, social support, and strain may interact through shared underlying mechanisms in conferring depression risk. The study examined whether IL-6 levels moderate the associations between social support and strain with future MDD symptoms. METHODS: Longitudinal data from 1,054 community adults in the Midlife Development in the United Sta

Social Capital in the Newborn Period and Household Food Insecurity at Child Age Two Years.

OBJECTIVE: Cross-sectional analyses have demonstrated an association between lower social capital and higher food insecurity in families with children. This study examined the association between social capital in the newborn period and household food insecurity at child age 2 years in a diverse US sample. METHODS: This secondary analysis used survey data from 596 child-caregiver dyads enrolled at 6 US academic sites in Greenlight Plus, a childhood obesity prevention trial. Proportional odds regression models analyzed associations between 2 newborn-period social capital measures, caregiver so

Autism, early psychosis, and social anxiety disorder: understanding the role of social cognition and its relationship to disability in young adults with disorders characterized by social impairments.

Impairments in social cognition are believed contribute to disability, particularly for disorders characterized by difficulties in social interaction. There has been little transdiagnostic investigation of this across social cognition domains in young adults. A total of 199 young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; N = 53), early psychosis (EP; N = 51), and social anxiety disorder (SAD; N = 64) were compared against neurotypical controls (NT; N = 31) on a battery of lower and higher-order and self-report social cognition measures. For both ASD and EP, participants showed impai…

The empathogen 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, but not methamphetamine, increases feelings of global trust.

BACKGROUND: The empathogen and psychostimulant 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is thought to boost both subjective well-being and social connection. Although MDMA is considered to enhance social connection to a greater extent than other stimulant drugs, few studies have compared MDMA to other stimulants. In addition, previous studies have focused on social positivity effects (e.g., increased trust) for specific in-lab interaction partners without considering more generalized social positivity effects (e.g., trust in one's community). AIMS: We tested the effects of MDMA on subjective

Dorsal CA1 projections to nucleus accumbens and lateral septum differentially regulate social and locomotor behavior.

Beyond its established role in spatial and episodic memory, the dorsal hippocampus also shapes motivated behavior by routing contextual information to downstream targets. Dorsal CA1 (dCA1) projects to the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and lateral septum (LS); here, we show that these pathways regulate distinct behaviors. We mapped and selectively manipulated these circuits in mice using projection-specific viral tracing, intersectional labeling, and terminal optogenetics. Activating dCA1-to-NAc terminals selectively increased social interaction without altering locomotion or novel-object exploration…

Instagram Content Analysis in the Context of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide.

The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide posits that interpersonal factors, specifically perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness, increase suicidal ideation. Many modern social interactions take place over social media and, as such, examining social media content may offer a novel way to assess interpersonal relationships. In this preregistered study of 386 young adults, we examined the relationship between the amount of interaction with friends- and whether or not individuals interacted with family-related Instagram content and perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and suic…

Mental Health, Coping, and Social Support Among People Living with HIV in the Americas: A Comparative Study Between Argentina and the USA During the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic poses a risk to mental health and may disproportionately affect people living with HIV (PLWH). This study examined the interaction of social support and resilient coping in predicting depressive symptoms among PLWH. PLWH residing in Buenos Aires, Argentina and in Miami, Florida (US) were asked to complete an anonymous survey on the impact of COVID-19. Statistical analysis included ordinary least squares regression. A total of 1,554 participants were included. Mean age was 47.30 years; 63.70% were men. A test of three-way interaction of social support × resilient coping ×

Problematic patterns of social media use increase with spontaneous cortical activity and transdiagnostic mental health symptoms in youth.

Adolescence is a period of profound biopsychosocial development, with peer interactions playing a critical role. Over the past decade, the dramatic increase in social media access among youth has fundamentally altered such interactions, enabling highly rewarding peer-to-peer social interactions to occur at almost any time and thereby escalate into problematic behaviors. Whether such a seemingly urgent need for interaction through social media constitutes problematic behavior remains unclear, but evidence suggests that social media use can become obsessive and lead to neglect in other areas of …

An approach-Avoidance structural model of perceived social functioning in physical education.

PURPOSE: This study tested a cross-sectional approach-avoidance model integrating personal responsibility, interaction anxiety, fear of scrutiny, and perceived social functioning in university physical education (PE). METHODS: Participants were 215 students from six intact PE classes. Structural equation models were estimated using maximum likelihood and robust MLM with Satorra-Bentler correction because multivariate normality was violated. Model-based indirect associations were examined with 5000 bias-corrected bootstrap resamples, alongside measurement and sensitivity analyses. RESULTS: Th
