Combining graphlets and random walks for capturing complex network topology.

Random-walk-based methods are widely used for network embedding and downstream learning tasks, yet it remains unclear which aspects of network topology they capture and which they ignore. This is a critical limitation in networks where node function depends not only on direct connectivity, but also on higher-order structural patterns. To address this gap, we introduce orbit adjacency, a graphlet-based descriptor that measures how often pairs of nodes co-occur in specific symmetric positions within small induced subgraphs. Using orbit adjacency, we provide a theoretical analysis showing that ra

Are Differences in Social Drive in Childhood and Adolescence Diagnosis Specific? A Multimeasurement Subtyping Approach.

OBJECTIVE: Altered social drive is a common feature across psychiatric disorders and is embedded in multiple diagnostic criteria, underscoring the need for a transdiagnostic approach. However, the extent to which social drive alterations vary across diagnoses and clinical presentations remains poorly characterized. This study examined whether distinct social drive profiles-defined by differences in social reticence, seeking, and maintaining challenges-relate to variations in clinical features and show specificity to particular neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions. METHOD: Data w

Comorbidity of problematic substance use and other addictive behaviors and anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Among those with common mental health disorders (e.g. mood, anxiety, and stress disorders), comorbidity of substance and other addictive disorders is prevalent. To simplify the seemingly complex relationships underlying such comorbidity, methods that include multiple measures to distill which specific addictions are uniquely associated with specific mental health disorders rather than due to the co-occurrence of other related addictions or mental health disorders can be used. METHODS: In a general population sample of Jewish adults in Israel (N = 4002), network analysis methods we

Social determinants of health and long-term profiles of subjective memory ratings in middle-aged and older adults: A population-based longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize long-term profiles of subjective memory ratings and examine their associations with cumulative, domain-specific, and individual social determinants of health (SDoH) among middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: We analyzed six waves of the China Family Panel Studies (2012-2022) comprising 14,938 adults aged ≥45 years. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to characterize longitudinal profiles of subjective memory ratings. Logistic regression estimated associations with baseline SDoH, with restricted cubic splines assessing dose-response shape and false-discovery-

Social ecological factors and medication treatment for opioid use disorder among justice-involved rural and urban persons: the Geographic variation in Addiction Treatment Experiences (GATE) longitudinal cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Three medications are Food and Drug Administration approved for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD); however, these medications are underused within prisons, which elevates the risk of relapse and overdose when persons with opioid use disorder (POUD) are released. Research is scant regarding the multilevel factors associated with POUDs' willingness to initiate medication treatment for opioid use disorder (MOUD) while in prison and their continued engagement in treatment after release. Furthermore, rural and urban populations have not been compared. The Geographic variation

The mediating role of loneliness between psychosocial and physiological well-being in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a risk factor for mental but also physical health concerns in older adults. This study aimed to examine the temporal associations among social relationships, mindfulness, and physiological functioning and the potential mediating role of loneliness. METHODS: The present study recruited 141 older adults experiencing loneliness (Mage = 64.1 years, 76 % female) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong. Participants completed a questionnaire that assessed loneliness, social network, perceived social support, and mindfulness, and provided six saliva samples for cortisol a

Testing the reinforcement learning hypothesis of social conformity.

Our preferences are influenced by the opinions of others. The past human neuroimaging studies on social conformity have identified a network of brain regions related to social conformity that includes the posterior medial frontal cortex (pMFC), anterior insula, and striatum. Since these brain regions are also known to play important roles in reinforcement learning (i.e., processing prediction error), it was previously hypothesized that social conformity and reinforcement learning have a common neural mechanism. However, although this view is currently widely accepted, these two processes have

Executive function mediates the prospective association between neurostructural differences within the central executive network and anti-social behavior after childhood traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing evidence of a link between early life brain injury and anti-social behavior, very few studies have assessed factors that explain this association in children with traumatic brain injury (TBI). One hypothesis suggests that childhood TBI elevates risk for anti-social behavior via disruption to anatomically distributed neural networks implicated in executive functioning (EF). In this longitudinal prospective study, we employed high-resolution structural neuroimaging to (a) evaluate the impact of childhood TBI on regional morphometry of the central executive network

Developmental dyslexia.

This review uses a levels-of-analysis framework to summarize the current understanding of developmental dyslexia's etiology, brain bases, neuropsychology, and social context. Dyslexia is caused by multiple genetic and environmental risk factors as well as their interplay. Several candidate genes have been identified in the past decade. At the brain level, dyslexia is associated with aberrant structure and function, particularly in left hemisphere reading/language networks. The neurocognitive influences on dyslexia are also multifactorial and involve phonological processing deficits as well as

The impact of exercise interventions on core symptoms of 3-12-year-old children with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Exercise interventions targeting Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) represent a critical approach for mitigating functional impairments in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study, for the first time, based on motor development theory, employed a Network Meta-analysis (NMA) to examine the effects of four types of exercise interventions-Isolation of Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS-I), Combination of Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS-C), Fine Motor Movement (FMM), and Specialized Movement Skills (SMS)-on the core symptoms of ASD in children aged 3-12, including social communicatio

A Comparison of Syphilis Partner Notification Outcomes by Reported Use of Internet-based Apps to Meet Sex Partners in North Carolina, 2013-2016.

BACKGROUND: Partner notification services (PNS) remain the backbone of syphilis control. The popularity of Internet-based apps to meet sex partners among early syphilis (ES) patients may hinder the success of PNS if partners cannot be located. METHODS: We compared demographic and clinical characteristics between male ES patients indicating sex with men (MSM) and reported in North Carolina between 2013 and 2016 by reported use of an Internet-based app to meet sex partners (app user). We used multivariable log-binomial regression to assess the association between app usage and ES exposure notif

Distal and proximal perspectives on the comorbidity network structure of anxiety and depression among adolescents: Insights from network analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The transdiagnostic psychopathology theory emphasizes that the distal (i.e., childhood trauma) and proximal (i.e., problematic social networking site use [PSNSU]) factors are associated with comorbid anxiety and depression. However, few studies have explored anxiety and depression comorbidities from both proximal and distal perspectives at the symptom level, leaving a research gap that warrants attention. METHOD: A total of 5,642 participants from four universities in China participated in this study. Childhood trauma, PSNSU, anxiety, and major depressive disorder were assessed uti

Network epidemiological analysis of COVID-19 transmission patterns by age, occupation and residence across four waves in Cyprus.

Complex transmission patterns are not immediately obvious to epidemiologists, hindering the development of effective intervention strategies. The aim is to develop network-based tools to identify transmission patterns across age-groups, occupations, and locations. Infection networks were constructed using COVID-19 contact tracing data, provided by the Cyprus Ministry of Health, for March 2020 to May 2021. Transmission patterns within/across age-groups, districts, and economic activities, as well as the presence of super-spreaders and the vulnerability of different groups, were assessed using t

Distinct multimodal biological and functional profiles of symptom-based subgroups in recent-onset psychosis.

Symptom heterogeneity characterizes psychotic disorders and hinders the delineation of underlying biomarkers. Here, we identify symptom-based subtypes of recent-onset psychosis (ROP) patients from the multi-center PRONIA (Personalized Prognostic Tools for Early Psychosis Management) database and explore their multimodal biological and functional signatures. We clustered N = 328 ROP patients based on their maximum factor scores in an exploratory factor analysis on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale items. We assessed inter-subgroup differences and compared to N = 464 healthy control (HC)

Impact of social isolation on change in brain volume in community-dwelling older Japanese people: The NEIGE Study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that social isolation is a risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia; however, its neurological mechanisms are not fully understood. Using longitudinal data, this study examined the effects of social isolation on hippocampal and total gray matter volumes in community-dwelling older Japanese individuals. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Neuron to Environmental Impact Across Generations (NEIGE) Study conducted in Tokamachi City (Niigata Prefecture, Japan), including 279 community-dwelling persons aged 65-84 years who underwent brain magnetic reson

Bilateral costly expulsions resolve the public goods dilemma.

Expulsion has been found to promote cooperation in social dilemmas, but only if it does not incur costs or is applied unilaterally. Here, we show that removing both conditions leads to a spontaneous resolution of the costly expulsion problem. Namely, by studying the public goods game where cooperators and defectors can expel others at a personal cost, we find that public cooperation thrives as expulsion costs increase. This is counterintuitive, as the cost of other-regarding behaviour typically places an additional burden on cooperation, which is in itself costly. Such scenarios are referred t

Social Motivation in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Mixed-Methods Exploration Using Eye-Tracking, Behavioral Tasks, Self- and Parent-Reports, and Qualitative Insights.

Social motivation diminishment is a core autism feature, yet prior research has been inconsistent, focusing on single dimensions and overlooking heterogeneity in motivational expressions among autistic individuals. This mixed-methods study compared social motivation in 104 individuals with autism (male: 74, Mage = 18.55 years) and 192 non-autistic peers (male: 101, Mage = 16.65 years), using eye-tracking and behavioral tasks, self-/parent-reports, and qualitative analysis of open-ended responses. Quantitative analyses revealed autistic participants had lower self-determined motivation, driven
