BACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities experience significant economic exclusion in South Africa. While vocational training has often been viewed through a narrow economic lens, its broader social contributions remained under-researched.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the social contributions of skills training for persons with disabilities, with specific attention to empowerment, inclusion and well-being.
METHOD: A qualitative multiple-case study design was employed. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews, photovoice, document analysis and field notes with eight participants

There is a global recognition that the homeless in different clusters are isolated social groups. They are highly susceptible to loneliness and related psycho-physical health outcomes owing to their less supportive and fragmented social networks. The conditions are worse in the case of chronic or lifetime homelessness. Beyond this popular notion, other critical perspectives are also there. This paper attempts to analyse the differences in inter-personal social networks between the chronic and the non-chronic homeless groups at a railway junction in India. The data have been collected through s

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the structural characteristics of a multiplex HIV transmission risk network of drug-using male sex workers and their associates.
METHODS: Using a sample of 387 drug-using male sex workers and their male and female associates in Houston, Texas, we estimated an exponential random graph model to examine the venue-mediated relationships between individuals, the structural characteristics of relationships not linked to social venues, and homophily. We collected data in 2003 to 2004. The network comprised social, sexual, and drug-using relationships and affiliations with

A social network is often divided into many factions. People are friends within each faction, while they are enemies of the other factions, and even my enemy's enemy is not necessarily my friend. This configuration can be described in terms of a weak form of structural balance. Although weak balance explains a number of real social networks, which dynamical rule achieves it has remained relatively unexplored. In this work, we show that the answer can be found in the field of indirect reciprocity, which assumes that people assess each other's behavior and choose how to behave to others based on

BACKGROUND: Digital platforms have expanded access to continuing medical education (CME), with podcasts and social media increasingly used as asynchronous learning resources. However, most established digital medical education initiatives operate primarily in English, creating linguistic and contextual barriers for professionals in non-Anglophone settings. Infectious diseases (ID) require frequent updating, and access to structured ID-focused CME in middle-income countries such as Brazil remains uneven. InfectoCast is a Brazilian digital initiative that integrates podcasting, social media, and

Conspecific social competence - the capacity of domestic dogs to engage in contextually appropriate interactions with other dogs - is a clinically significant yet systematically underaddressed construct in canine behavioural science. Existing approaches to reactivity and fear-based behaviour reduce problematic responses effectively, but are oriented toward managing conspecific exposure rather than developing genuine communicative and regulatory competence, and no framework currently exists for developing these capacities in adult dogs who have passed the early socialisation window. This paper

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety and avoidance behaviors are prevalent among breast cancer patients, yet their interrelationships with protective factors such as spiritual well-being remain poorly understood. Network analysis offers a novel approach to identify central and bridge nodes that may serve as key targets for psychosocial intervention.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 302 female breast cancer patients from a tertiary hospital in China. Participants completed the Social Anxiety Scale (SAS_1), Social Avoidance Scale (SAS_2), and the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness T

Neonatal exposure to noxious stimuli such as repeated heel lances can cause behavior changes. In the NICU sucrose given prior to procedures attenuates the immediate behavioral response to noxious stimuli but may not ameliorate the long-term consequences, and treatment with 24 % sucrose can brain structure and behavior in adult rodents. We used a rat model to determine whether paw pricks during the neonatal period alter social interaction and/or paw withdrawal thresholds (PWT) in adolescence, and if 7 % sucrose mitigates these effects. One male and one female pup per litter was assigned to each

Guided by a developmental psychopathology framework, research has increasingly focused on the interplay of genetics and environment as a predictor of different forms of psychopathology, including social anxiety. In these efforts, the polygenic nature of complex phenotypes such as social anxiety is increasingly recognized, but studies applying polygenic approaches are still scarce. In this study, we applied Principal Covariates Regression as a novel approach to creating polygenic components for the oxytocin system, which has recently been put forward as particularly relevant to social anxiety.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have severe difficulties in social interaction and communication, as well as restricted and/or stereotyped patterns of behavior. Previous studies have suggested that abnormal neural connectivity might be associated with higher information processing dysfunction involving social impairment. However, the white matter structure in ASD is poorly understood. To explore this, we conducted a voxel-based, whole-brain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) analysis to determine fractional anisotropy (FA), λ(1), λ(2) and λ(3) in high-functioning children with ASD

BACKGROUND: Colombia is one of the most unequal countries in Latin America, with Bogotá exemplifying the urban concentration of structural and intersectional inequalities. Adolescents living in marginalised areas of the city face vulnerabilities due to overlapping systems of oppression, including classism, racism, sexism, and xenophobia. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated these disparities, heightening socioeconomic stressors and influencing developmental processes. This study aimed to explore how adolescents in two socioeconomically disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Bogotá experience and

INTRODUCTION: Food-environment models often privilege structural determinants and under-specify how eating practices and agency participate in (re)producing environments. This study analyzes, through a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, how social eating practices are shaped by food environments and, in turn, contribute to their differential configuration across two districts of contrasting socioeconomic status. It proposes a theoretical framework that articulates Bourdieu's praxeology with Shove's theory of practices, conceptualizing food environments as social fields in which capit

BACKGROUND: This investigation examines the differences in subcortical volume between schizophrenia patients treated with chlorpromazine (CPZ) or clozapine (CLZ) and healthy controls and examines how these antipsychotic treatments affect brain structure.
METHODS: Structural MRI (3T) was used to assess subcortical volumes in 24 CPZ-treated patients, 24 CLZ-treated patients, and 24 healthy controls. Clinical symptoms and social function were evaluated using PANSS and SSPI scales. Correlate and predictive analyses were performed to explore the relationship between the volume of subcortical struc

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can significantly reduce HIV acquisition especially among communities with high HIV prevalence, including men who have sex with men (MSM). Much research has been finding suboptimal PrEP persistence; however, few studies examine factors that enhance PrEP persistence in real-world settings.
METHODS: We interviewed 33 patients who identified as MSM at three different PrEP clinics in three regions of the U.S. (Northeast, South, Midwest). Participants were eligible if they took PrEP and had been retained in care for a minimum of 6 months. Interviews expl

BACKGROUND: Supernumerary sex chromosome aneuploidies (X/Y-aneuploidies), the presence of extra X and/or Y chromosomes, are associated with heightened rates of language impairments and social difficulties. However, no single study has examined different language domains and social functioning in the same sample of children with tri-, tetra-, and pentasomy X/Y-aneuploidy. The current research sought to fill this gap in the literature and to examine dosage effects of X and Y chromosomes on language and social functioning.
METHODS: Participants included 110 youth with X/Y-aneuploidies (32 female

The role of the posterior cerebellum in social cognition is well established; however, it is still unclear whether different cerebellar subregions contribute to different social cognitive processes by exerting specific functions. Here, we employed transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in male and female healthy humans to test the hypothesis of the existence of a medial-to-lateral gradient in the functional organization of the posterior cerebellum, according to which the phylogenetically newer cerebellar hemispheres are involved in tasks requiring higher-level social inferences whereas vermal

Social search has stably evolved across various species and is often used by humans to search for resources (such as food, information, social partners). In turn, these resources frequently come distributed in patches or clusters. In the current work, we use an ecologically inspired agent-based model to investigate whether social search and clustering are stable outcomes of the dynamical mutual interactions between the two. While previous research has studied unidirectional influences of social search on resource clustering and vice versa, the current work investigates the consequential patter

Cognitive models of social phobia (social anxiety disorder) assume that individuals with social phobia experience anxiety in social situations in part because they overestimate the social cost associated with a potentially negative outcome of a social interaction. Some emotion theorists, on the other hand, point to the perception of control over anxiety-related symptoms as a determinant of social anxiety. In order to examine the relationship between perceived emotional control (PEC), estimated social cost (ESC), and subjective anxiety, we compared three alternative structural equation models:
