Assessment of Social Support and Quitting Smoking in an Online Community Forum: Study Involving Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: A key factor in successfully reducing and quitting smoking, as well as preventing smoking relapse is access to and engagement with social support. Recent technological advances have made it possible for smokers to access social support via online community forums. While community forums associated with smoking cessation interventions are now common practice, there is a gap in understanding how and when the different types of social support identified by Cutrona and Suhr (1992) (emotional, esteem, informational, tangible, and network) are exchanged on such forums. Community forums t…

Multidimensional vulnerability among older adults in Germany : Social support buffers the negative association with life satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Multidimensional vulnerability among older adults, characterized by low levels of individual resources in different life domains, has been insufficiently studied. This phenomenon is considered to be associated with a marked decrease in overall life satisfaction. Social support is supposed to buffer the negative effect of multidimensional vulnerability on life satisfaction. METHODS: Analyses are based on the German Health Update dataset (GEDA 2014/2015-EHIS). The analytic sample includes respondents ≥ 65 years (N = 5826). Confirmatory factor analyses were performed to construct a l…

Functional and structural social support in DSM-5 mood and anxiety disorders: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Social support has been found to be a key correlate of many psychiatric disorders including several mood and anxiety disorders. However, research on social support is largely investigated in individual disorders, despite the high co-occurrence of these diagnoses, and has typically relied on pre-DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. Additionally, differences in structural and functional social support are rarely explored. Thus, the present study investigated the unique association between these two aspects of social support and past-year DSM-5 mood and anxiety disorders while adjusting for com…

Relation of social network support to child health behaviors among children in treatment for overweight/obesity.

PURPOSE: Little is known about the influence of social network support on child health behaviors in the context of weight-loss interventions. This study examined the associations between a child's co-participation (i.e., network support) in weight-related health behaviors (i.e., physical and sedentary activity, eating behavior) and the child's own health behaviors during family-based behavioral treatment (FBT). METHODS: Children (n = 241) with overweight/obesity (mean age = 9.4 ± 1.3y; 63% female) completed semi-structured interviews assessing network support for healthy/unhealthy eating and

The Importance of Positive Social Support During Reentry From Prison: Examining the Role of Volunteer Mentoring.

Social support appears to be important in improving outcomes for incarcerated individuals during the reentry process not only in terms of general wellbeing but also in gaining employment and avoiding recidivism. Mentoring programs have become increasingly popular interventions that are intended to provide such support during reentry. However, research on mentoring programs is limited and tends to focus solely on the programs' impact on recidivism, a distal outcome. Through the use of semi-structured, in-depth interviews, this qualitative study focuses on more proximal outcomes, exploring how r…

Suicidal ideation among Chinese survivors of childhood sexual abuse: Associations with rumination and perceived social support.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have shown that childhood sexual abuse (CSA) experiences might be related to suicidal ideation in later life, its associations with rumination and perceived social support (PSS) remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to expand prior findings among Chinese survivors of CSA to investigate rumination's effect on the association between CSA and suicidal ideation, and the potential moderating role of PSS in this relationship. METHODS: The Childhood Sexual Abuse Questionnaire, the Ruminative Response Scale, the Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived …

Identifying Social Skills That Support Housing Attainment and Retention Among Homeless Persons With Serious Mental Illness.

OBJECTIVE: By combining supportive services with independent housing, permanent supportive housing (PSH) programs effectively address homelessness. Yet, many persons with serious mental illness struggle to attain and retain housing in these programs. Social skills-which facilitate social interactions and instrumental tasks-predict premature exit from PSH. This project aimed to build consensus on a set of social skills that supports independent housing attainment and retention among homeless persons with serious mental illness, with a clinical focus on PSH programs. METHODS: Guided by the RAND

There is thus an urgent need to explore the IPV risk faced by young mothers and its association with their mental health, anxiety in particular. The study aimed to investigate the correlation between IPV victimization and anxiety in young mothers, as well as the protective effects of social support and resilience. A total of 79 young Chi…

Correlates of Illicit Drug Use Among Indigenous Peoples in Canada: A Test of Social Support Theory.

Relying on a national stratified random sample of Indigenous peoples aged 19 years old and above in Canada, this study investigates the correlates of illicit drug use among Indigenous peoples, paying special attention to the association between social support measures and illegal drug use. Results from multivariate logistical regression show that measures of social support, such as residential mobility, strength of ties within communities, and lack of timely counseling, are statistically significant correlates of illicit drug use. Those identifying as Christian are significantly less likely to…

Intimate Partner Violence Victims Seeking a Temporary Restraining Order: Social Support and Resilience Attenuating Psychological Distress.

Social support has been found in many studies to be a protective factor for those exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV), but personal resilience has received far less attention. The present study concerns 136 female IPV victims seeking a temporary restraining order (TRO) from a Family Justice Center (FJC). The relationships between IPV victimization, social support, resilience, and psychological distress were examined. Hierarchical regressions found that both perceived social support and self-reported resilience were inversely associated with distress symptoms. Higher social support was a…

The purpose of this study was to explore whether the relationships between PTSD symptoms and both depression and social support were moderated by gender and race. Data were collected from 631 African American (AA) and 299 European…
