Relationship between Bilateral Landmarks of Facial Asymmetry in Skeletal Class II and Class III in Vertical Dimension: 3D Facial Scan and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.

Significant facial asymmetry can lead to both functional and aesthetic issues. Often, such asymmetry originates from irregularities in the jaw structure. It is critical to recognize that asymmetries can be concealed by soft tissue, which may be overlooked. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between bilateral landmarks in the vertical dimension of facial asymmetry among individuals with skeletal Class II and Class III malocclusions. Fifty-two adult patients with a mean age of 24.4 ± 3.79 years with facial asymmetry who underwent orthodontic and orthognathic surgery were s

Finite element modelling of the human middle ear using synchrotron-radiation phase-contrast imaging.

Finite element (FE) models of the middle ear often lack accurate geometry of soft tissue structures, such as the suspensory ligaments, as they can be difficult to discern using conventional imaging modalities, such as computed tomography. Synchrotron-radiation phase-contrast imaging (SR-PCI) is a non-destructive imaging modality that has been shown to produce excellent visualization of soft tissue structures without the need for extensive sample preparation. The objectives of the investigation were to firstly use SR-PCI to create and evaluate a biomechanical FE model of the human middle ear th

A CASE OF TRAUMATIC SOFT CONTACT LENS DISLOCATION INTO THE VITREOUS SPACE AFTER CORNEAL PERFORATION IN A PHAKIC EYE: A NOVEL INDICATION FOR MEMBRANEBLUE-DUAL.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of traumatic soft contact lens dislocation into the vitreous space after a large-sized corneal perforation with a clout nail, causing aniridia but leaving the crystalline lens intact. METHODS: A case report of a 44-year-old male patient with a corneal perforation. RESULTS: The patient presented with a traumatic corneal perforation after a large clout nail impacted on his left eye. Aniridia and inferior zonulolysis were seen, but the crystalline lens was perfectly clear. Because computed tomography imaging and B-scan ultrasonography showed no signs of intraocular f

Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections (NSTI): Pearls and Pitfalls for the Emergency Clinician.

BACKGROUND: Skin and soft tissue infections are common emergency department (ED) presentations. These infections cover a wide spectrum of disease, from simple cellulitis to necrotizing fasciitis. Despite the commonality, a subset of skin and soft tissue infections known as necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) can cause significant morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE: This review evaluates the current evidence regarding the presentation, evaluation, and management of NSTI from the ED perspective. DISCUSSION: NSTIs are commonly missed diagnoses. History and physical examination findings a

Predictive prosthetic socket design: part 1-population-based evaluation of transtibial prosthetic sockets by FEA-driven surrogate modelling.

It has been proposed that finite element analysis can complement clinical decision making for the appropriate design and manufacture of prosthetic sockets for amputees. However, clinical translation has not been achieved, in part due to lengthy solver times and the complexity involved in model development. In this study, a parametric model was created, informed by variation in (i) population-driven residuum shape morphology, (ii) soft tissue compliance and (iii) prosthetic socket design. A Kriging surrogate model was fitted to the response of the analyses across the design space enabling predi

Method for the quantification of rupture probability in soft collagenous tissues.

A computational method is presented for the assessment of rupture probabilities in soft collagenous tissues. This may in particular be important for the quantitative analysis of medical diseases such as atherosclerotic arteries or abdominal aortic aneurysms, where an unidentified rupture has in most cases fatal consequences. The method is based on the numerical minimization and maximization of probabilities of failure, which arise from random input quantities, for example, tissue properties. Instead of assuming probability distributions for these quantities, which are typically unknown especia

Treating Parry-Romberg Syndrome Using Three-Dimensional Scanning and Printing and the Anterolateral Thigh Dermal Adipofascial Flap.

BACKGROUND: As three-dimensional technology becomes more ubiquitous, many plastic surgical applications have emerged. The authors investigate a three-dimensional scanning and printing system for facial soft tissue reconstruction in conjunction with an anterolateral thigh dermal adipofascial flap for the treatment of Parry-Romberg syndrome. METHODS: Seven patients with facial atrophy of the zygomatic, buccal, and mandibular areas were included. Three-dimensional scanning of each patient's face in conjunction was analyzed with computer-aided design (CAD) to quantify areas of facial asymmetry. M

One year postoperative hard and soft tissue volumetric changes after a BSSO mandibular advancement.

In this study, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and three dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry are used to compare the 3D skeletal and soft tissue changes caused by a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) 1 year after a mandibular advancement. Eighteen consecutive patients with a hypoplastic mandible were treated with a BSSO according to the Hunsuck modification. Preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively, a CBCT scan was acquired and a 3D photograph. The pre- and postoperative CBCT scans were matched using voxel based registration. After registration, the mandible could be segmented i

Surveillance strategies for patients following surgical resection of soft tissue sarcomas.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine the factors predictive of recurrence for soft tissue sarcomas, the role of salvage therapy, and the data in support of current surveillance strategies. RECENT FINDINGS: There are multiple primary tumor characteristics and other factors that can stratify patients into low- or high-risk groups for developing recurrent disease. The available data also support a limited role for salvage therapy in the setting of isolated local recurrence or distant metastases. The use of routine chest computed tomography as opposed to conventional chest x-ray for pulmonary surveillan

Posterior shoulder instability. Surgical versus conservative results with evaluation of glenoid version.

We conducted a retrospective study on 50 patients with recurrent posterior shoulder instability. Twenty-five patients were treated conservatively with a specific rehabilitation program strengthening the rotator cuff. The other 25 patients, who did not improve with rehabilitation, underwent surgical reconstruction, the majority of these being soft tissue repairs. Recurrence in the surgically treated group averaged 72% while that in the conservatively treated group was 96%. However, 50% of those patients treated surgically and 68% of those treated conservatively felt their symptoms were improved

Soft contact lenses as prospective transport systems for ophthalmology.

The time course of drug adsorption and desorption, exposure of soft contact lenses in a drug solution needed for maximum saturation, and the duration of lens wearing during which the drug was transported from the lens and exhibited its therapeutic activity were studied. The possibility of using computer simulation for the choice of material, carrier for the drug (myramistin hydrochloride), was evaluated. Due to use of this method, the volume of experimental studies could be reduced and the data systematized.

An unusual case of noncavitary hemorrhage revealed by intravenous contrast-enhanced computed tomography.

Peripheral arterial injuries after blunt trauma commonly follow injuries to adjacent soft tissue, organ, and bone. We present here a case of blunt injury to the lumbar artery and the deep iliac circumflex artery in which there was no adjacent bone fracture, but in which hemorrhagic shock and persistent anemia ensued. Intravenous contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed the site of active bleeding, leading us to perform an angiographic embolization for hemostasis.

[Tracheobronchial perforations--a complication after mouth, maxillary and facial surgery].

After difficult endotracheal intubation in oral and maxillofacial surgery, esophageal or tracheal injuries can cause mediastinal, pericardial or cervicofacial soft tissue emphysema. If a patient has of thoracic pain after general anesthesia, mediastinal emphysema should be taken into consideration because of the possibility of subsequent life-threatening complications. Diagnosis can be established with computed tomography and fiber-endoscopy. We present the diagnostic and therapeutic management of two patients.

Hyperplastic callus formation in osteogenesis imperfecta: CT and MRI findings.

Hyperplastic callus formation is a noteworthy condition in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta because it often mimicks osteosarcoma on radiography. The findings of CT and MRI in hyperplastic callus formation have not been reported. In the presented case, MRI demonstrated contrast enhancement and edema of the surrounding soft tisssue, consistent with benign as well as malignant disease. Computed tomography showed a calcified rim of the lesion which may be a useful feature to rule out osteosarcoma in this condition.

Traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis in a patient presenting with torticollis. A case report.

In a 34-year-old man with an acute traumatic spondylolisthesis (ATS) of the axis, the presenting physical sign was severe torticollis associated with reactive spasm of the right sternomastoid muscle. Computed axial tomography (CAT) was useful both in assessing the nature of ATS (which involved more displacement of the axis fracture and adjacent soft-tissues on the right side of the neck) and in ascertaining reduction, realignment, and healing. The reduction was sustained by halo-vest immobilization.

Epiploic appendicitis: CT characteristics.

Acute infarction of an appendix epiploica resulted in an inflammatory process involving the caudal aspect of the transverse colon and the adjacent greater omentum. Computed tomography demonstrated prominent linear soft tissue densities, an increase in CT number of the involved greater omentum, and posterior displacement of the small bowel. In the setting of acute abdominal pain the location and focal nature of the inflammatory process as seen on CT may allow the radiologist to suggest the correct diagnosis.

Improving retention of mandibular complete dentures through soft liner border molding and digital fabrication.

Mandibular complete dentures frequently present challenges related to retention and stability associated with anatomic and functional constraints. Traditional impression techniques often involve multiple steps and materials that can lead to dimensional inaccuracies and patient discomfort. This clinical report introduces a simplified dual-stage digital mandibular scanning technique using a soft liner for border molding combined with a digital workflow. By integrating digital scanning and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technologies, this method enhances the accu

Recurrent ovarian carcinoma presenting as a solitary sternal metastasis on FDG PET/CT.

We report the positron emission tomography/computed tomography appearance of solitary sternal metastasis from primary ovarian carcinoma in a 65-year-old woman who underwent surgery followed by chemoradiation treatment 3 years earlier. Restaging positron emission tomography/computed tomography study demonstrates an intensely active destructive lesion involving the entire sternum (maximum standard uptake value: 4.7) with a photopenic soft tissue mass component in the center of the sternum protruding anteriorly suggestive of necrosis. This sternal lesion was subsequently biopsied and pathology re

Magnetic resonance imaging: application in musculoskeletal infection.

Forty-two patients with clinically suspected osteomyelitis were examined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Twenty-seven patients (64%) had previous surgery or fracture, and 15 (36%) were referred for differentiation of acute osteomyelitis from bone tumors or other pathologic conditions. MRI was compared with computed tomography in 12 cases and with 111In-labeled leukocytes scans in 22. With MRI, 92% of proved infections were detected, and bone and soft-tissue changes were more evident than with routine radiographs, tomography, or computed tomography. In patients with negative cultures an
