Developmental dysphasia: clinical importance and underlying neurological causes.

This survey deals with two aspects of developmental dysphasia which are relevant to child psychiatry; the early diagnosis and treatment of children with developmental dysphasia, which may prevent the progression of learning and behaviour disorders, and the underlying biological causes of this neuro-developmental disorder. The pathophysiology of developmental dysphasia is complex and age-related. In the pre-verbal and early verbal stage, the severity of the clinical picture is primarily determined by concomitant motor pathology (motor dysfunction, dysarthria, general and oral dyspraxia) and by

Speech-Language Pathologists' Use of Intelligibility Measures in Adults With Dysarthria.

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who work with adults with dysarthria were surveyed to investigate trends of clinical practice for assessing speech intelligibility. METHOD: Two hundred ninety-six SLPs responded to an online survey October 22-November 30, 2015. RESULTS: Findings showed that 35% of SLPs lacked access to any standardized assessments of intelligibility, with 66% of these implicating cost as the main reason. Work settings played a role, as all SLPs working in Veterans Affairs hospitals and 97% of SLPs working in university or research clinics reported access to at lea

Barriers to Voice Therapy Attendance in a Language-Diverse Population.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Voice therapy is an effective treatment for many voice disorders, but success depends on attendance and adherence. Many factors hinder treatment attendance, and language discordance with the provider may present an additional obstacle to attending therapy. This study evaluates factors associated with voice therapy attendance at a language-diverse, safety-net hospital. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. METHODS: Retrospective review of adult patients referred to speech language pathology for treatment of voice disorders from January, 2018 to April, 2019. Primary

Food Service Professionals' Experiences of Accommodating Dietary Requests and Texture Modification.

BACKGROUND: Previous research highlights that people with specific dietary needs, such as texture-modified diets for dysphagia, often struggle to find suitable food in the community. However, few studies have investigated food service professionals' role in remedying this barrier. AIM: The current study aimed to understand food service professionals' perspectives and experiences accommodating dietary requests, with a specific focus on texture modification for dysphagia. METHODS: Using a qualitative descriptive approach, food service professionals from a range of contexts (n = 13) engaged in

Dysarthria Assessment Across Spain: A Survey Study of Tools, Practices, and Needs.

INTRODUCTION: Dysarthria, a motor speech disorder that has a significant impact on communication, requires precise assessment for accurate diagnosis and intervention. Although internationally recognised assessment tools exist, many are not culturally or linguistically adapted for Spanish-speaking populations. The objective of this study was to investigate how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in Spain navigate the lack of appropriate dysarthria assessment tools and identify the additional resources and tools required to enhance evaluation practices. METHOD: This cross-sectional study survey

Confidence, Accuracy, and Reliability of Penetration-Aspiration Scale Ratings on Flexible Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing by Speech Pathologists.

This study investigated rater confidence when rating airway invasion with the penetration-aspiration scale (PAS) on flexible endoscopic evaluations of swallowing (FEES), raters' accuracy against a referent-standard, inter-rater reliability, and potential associations between clinician confidence, experience, and accuracy. Thirty-one clinicians who use FEES in their daily practice were asked to judge airway invasion with the PAS and to rate their confidence that their score was correct (0-100) for 40 video clips, five in each of the 8 PAS categories. We found that raters were most confident in

Evaluating the Feasibility and Validity of Using Trained Allied Health Assistants to Assist in Mealtime Monitoring of Dysphagic Patients.

Growing patient numbers, within a context of finite resources, has placed increased demands on dysphagia services in acute settings. Delegating some aspects of dysphagia management to other trained professional groups, such as allied health assistants (AHA), may help speech-language pathology (SLP) service efficiencies. The primary aim of this study was to explore the feasibility and initial validity of using trained AHAs to complete structured mealtime observations of patients. The secondary aims were to explore costs and user perceptions. The study used a mixed methods design. All AHAs who p…

Speech-language pathologists' roles in the delivery of positive behavior support for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Positive behavior support interventions such as functional communication training (FCT) and visual schedules are increasingly being used with individuals with autism and other severe developmental disabilities who engage in problem behavior and use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The increasing use of these communication interventions has implications for speech-language pathologists who provide support to these individuals. The purpose of this tutorial is to summarize the research regarding the use of FCT/AAC interventions and visual schedules, and to provide suggestions for

Language diversity, language disorder, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder among youth sentenced to detention in Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: While studies confirm high prevalence of language disorder among justice-involved young people, little is known about the impact of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) on language among this population. It is also not clear how language skills vary according to language diversity in Australian youth justice settings, where a disproportionate number of justice-involved youth are Aboriginal and may not speak Standard Australian English (SAE) as their first language. Language skills are important to understand, as language disorder and language difference can lead to a mismatch bet
