Management of Acute Subaxial Trauma and Spinal Cord Injury in Professional Collision Athletes.

Sports-related acute cervical trauma and spinal cord injury (SCI) represent a rare but devastating potential complication of collision sport injuries. Currently, there is debate on appropriate management protocols and return-to-play guidelines in professional collision athletes following cervical trauma. While cervical muscle strains and sprains are among the most common injuries sustained by collision athletes, the life-changing effects of severe neurological sequelae (ie, quadriplegia and paraplegia) from fractures and SCIs require increased attention and care. Appropriate on-field managemen

Athletic injuries in adolescents.

In a survey of adolescent patients treated in the University of Rochester Section of Athletic Medicine, injuries to adolescent athletes comprised 12 per cent of all athletic injuries during an 18-month period. The incidence among boys was much greater than among girls, and injuries to the lower extremity--particularly the knee--were most common. Sprains and strains, fractures, chondromalacia of the patella, contusions, and internal derangements of the knee accounted for 80 per cent of the 161 injuries studied. Participation in athletic events has many positive aspects for the adolescent, but i…

Epidemiology of injuries associated with physical training among young men in the army.

It is widely acknowledged that musculoskeletal injuries occur as a result of vigorous physical activity and exercise, but little quantitative documentation exists on the incidence of or risk factors for these injuries. This study was conducted to assess the incidence, types, and risk factors for training-related injuries among young men undergoing Army infantry basic training. Prior to training we evaluated 303 men (median age 19 yr), utilizing questionnaires and measurements of physical fitness. Subjects were followed over 12 wk of training. Physical training was documented on a daily basis,

A Descriptive Study of Musculoskeletal Injuries in Long-Haul Truck Drivers: A NIOSH National Survey.

Long-haul truck drivers are significantly affected by musculoskeletal injuries with incidence rates 3.5 times higher than the national average. Yet, little is known about injuries that affect long-haul trucks drivers. In 2010, interviewers collected data from 1,265 long-haul truck drivers at 32 truck stops across the United States. These surveys were analyzed to describe all self-reported musculoskeletal injuries. Injuries to the arm (26.3%) and back (21.1%) were the two areas most reported in the survey. Musculoskeletal injuries were most often caused by falls (38.9%) and contact with an obje

Intimate Partner Violence and Orthopaedics: AOA Critical Issues.

One in 50 women presenting to an orthopaedic clinic with an injury have been injured from intimate partner violence (IPV). This number does not include the additional patients who have experienced psychological or emotional abuse. Musculoskeletal injuries, such as fractures, sprains, strains, and dislocations, are the second-most prevalent injury type after head and neck injuries that occur after physical violence. Therefore, it is incumbent on health-care workers who provide care in fracture clinics to recognize musculoskeletal manifestations of IPV. Given the serial follow-up assessments for

Wrist injuries part 1: pinpointing pathology in a complex joint.

The wrist is a complex joint and a common site for injury in virtually every type of recreational activity. This article describes a workup that will lay the groundwork for a diagnosis more specific than wrist sprain or strain. Instructions are given for taking a detailed history, palpating the five zones of the wrist, performing provocative maneuvers, giving diagnostic injections, and obtaining imaging studies. Plain x-rays of both wrists may be sufficient to diagnose a fracture or subluxation, but if x-rays are negative and a fracture is still suspected, other imaging studies may be needed.

Biceps femoris long head muscle and aponeurosis geometry in males with and without a history of hamstring strain injury.

OBJECTIVES: Hamstring strain injuries (HSIs) commonly affect the proximal biceps femoris long head (BFlh) musculotendinous junction. Biomechanical modeling suggests narrow proximal BFlh aponeuroses and large muscle-to-aponeurosis width ratios increase localized tissue strains and presumably risk of HSI. This study aimed to determine if BFlh muscle and proximal aponeurosis geometry differed between limbs with and without a history of HSI. METHODS: Twenty-six recreationally active males with (n = 13) and without (n = 13) a history of unilateral HSI in the last 24 months underwent magnetic reson

Physical Examination of Ankle Sprain and Ankle Instability: Can We Really Divide It into Low and High Ankle Sprains?

Lateral ankle ligament sprains and syndesmotic injuries are two different entities. However, they may be combined under the same spectrum depending on the arch of violence during the injury. Currently, the clinical examination has a limited value in the differential diagnosis between an acute anterior talofibular ligament rupture and a syndesmotic high ankle sprain. However, its use is indispensable for raising a high index of suspicion for detecting these injuries. Based on the mechanism of injury, clinical examination plays an essential role in guiding further imaging and early diagnosis of

Determining key clinical predictors for chronic ankle instability and return to sports with cost of illness analysis: protocol of a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Ankle sprains are common in sports and the general population. Although considered innocuous, a large proportion has residual complaints such as recurrent ankle sprains and develop chronic ankle instability. Although some predicting factors are identified, there is no unequivocality regarding the development of chronic ankle instability, nor about the optimal rehabilitation for an acute ankle sprain. Alongside the biomechanical impairments, ankle sprains are a burden on society due to substantial economic costs. Therefore, we aim to identify key clinical predictors of chronic ank

Sex, military occupation and rank are associated with risk of anterior cruciate ligament injury in tactical-athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is common within the US military and represents a significant loss to readiness. Since recent changes to operational tempo, there has not been an analysis of ACL injury risk. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate military occupation, sex, rank and branch of service on ACL injury risk in the US military from 2006 to 2018. METHODS: The Defense Medical Epidemiology Database was queried for the number of US tactical athletes with International Classification of Diseases diagnosis codes 717.83 (old disruption of ACL), 844.2

Transient characteristics of body sway during single-leg stance in athletes with a history of ankle sprain.

BACKGROUND: The role of the measurements of postural stability in the context of screening for ankle sprain risk is still equivocal. Transient characteristics of body sway have been suggested as an alternative or an improvement to traditional whole-trial analyses. RESEARCH QUESTION: Are transient characteristics of body sway sensitive to the history of ankle sprain?. METHODS: The assessment of 30-s single-leg body sway was performed on a group of 93 athletes from basketball, soccer, tennis and running who reported at least 1 ankle sprain in the last 12 months, while a group of 244 athletes f
