Prevalence and management of gastrointestinal complications in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal complications in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) have been understudied, particularly in Asian populations. This study aimed to determine the frequency and clinical characteristics of gastrointestinal complications. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective study reviewed medical records of 459 Asian patients with genetically or biopsy-confirmed DMD, aged 1-48 years, from September 1, 2010, to January 1, 2023. RESULTS: Constipation was the most common complication, affecting 149 patients (32.5 %), followed by dysphagia in 43 patients (9.4 %). Other conditions

Gastric volvulus with diaphragmatic hernia presenting with unexplained weight loss: a delayed diagnosis.

Gastric volvulus (GV) is a rare condition that presents with epigastric pain, retching and at times, vomiting. There are two types of GV: organoaxial and mesenteroaxial. We report the case of a 49-year-old woman with chronic mesenteroaxial volvulus with left-sided diaphragmatic defect. She presented with significant weight loss over a period of two years, with nonspecific symptoms of heartburn, occasional mild epigastric pain and anorexia. The patient was diagnosed with barium meal and contrast-enhanced computed tomography imaging. She was treated with open repair of diaphragmatic defect and a

Cardiac Arrest Caused by an Acute Intrathoracic Gastric Volvulus Treated With Percutaneous Gastrostomy.

During cardiopulmonary resuscitation, one of the first priorities after establishing basic and advanced life support is to identify the cause of the arrest. We present a rare case of cardiac arrest due to a decreased venous return from mediastinal shift caused by a paraesophageal hernia with an incarcerated thoracic gastric volvulus, which was treated by percutaneous gastrostomy.

Combined laparoscopic ovariectomy and laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy in dogs susceptible to gastric dilatation-volvulus.

This prospective study describes a simple method of combining laparoscopic ovariectomy and laparoscopic-assisted prophylactic gastropexy and determines the duration of surgery, complications, and long-term outcome including prevention of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Laparoscopic ovariectomy and laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy were performed on 26 sexually intact female dogs susceptible to GDV. The mean surgery time was 60.8 ± 12.4 min. No GDV episode was seen during the study period (mean follow-up: 5.2 ± 1.4 y). All dogs had an intact gastropexy attachment assessed by ultrasonography a

Laparoscopic mesh repair of a Bochdalek diaphragmatic hernia with acute gastric volvulus in a pregnant patient.

The advantages of minimally invasive therapy can be utilised in the surgical disorders of pregnant patients. To our knowledge, there has not been a previous report describing laparoscopic management of diaphragmatic hernia (with mesh) in pregnancy. A 23-year-old pregnant (second trimester) woman was admitted with vomiting, epigastric pain, oliguria and dyspnoea of one month duration. Investigations revealed posterolateral diaphragmatic hernia of Bochdalek with gastric volvulus. Successful laparoscopic mesh-plasty of the diaphragmatic hernia was performed without mortality or morbidity to both

Prognostic value of surgical and postoperative findings in cattle with abomasal volvulus.

A prospective study evaluating the prognostic value of surgical and postoperative findings in 80 cattle with abomasal volvulus was performed. Surgical correction of abomasal volvulus was performed in all animals. After surgery, cattle were categorized into 3 groups: productive (acceptable milk production or appetite, n = 59), salvaged (poor milk production or appetite, n = 10), and nonsurvivors (n = 11). Cattle with omasal-abomasal volvulus had a significantly (P less than 0.005) worse prognosis than cattle without omasal involvement. Large abomasal fluid volume, venous thrombosis, and blue or

Prenatal Diagnosis of Congenital Paraesophageal Hernia With Gastric Volvulus and Postnatal FBN1 Mutation Confirmation.

We report a case of a fetus with a congenital paraesophageal hernia (CPEH) with suspected volvulus and a paternal history of Marfan syndrome (MFS). The patient was followed by a multidisciplinary team with plans for postnatal surgical intervention and genetic testing. Postnatal examination confirmed CPEH with gastric volvulus, requiring surgical repair on the first day of life. Neonatal genetic analysis detected a paternally inherited heterozygous pathogenic variant in FBN1, associated with MFS. Prenatal ultrasound findings of CPEH and volvulus have seldom been reported as associations with fe

Conservative Management of Gastric Twist and Leak Post Band Removal and Sleeve Gastrectomy.

AIM: Gastric twist is a rare, however, troublesome complication of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. This report describes a case complicated by perforation and leak in addition to twist. The patient was managed conservatively and successfully. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old female patient with a body mass index (BMI) of 41.3 kg/m2 (111 kg/1.64 m), who underwent gastric band insertion six years ago, recently experienced postprandial vomiting. Endoscopic examination revealed grade A esophagitis, minor antral gastropathy, and mild bulbar duodenitis. Her BMI was calculated at 33.1 kg/m2 (89 kg/

Role of Diagnostic Preoperative Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in Radiologically Confirmed Gastric Volvulus.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gastric volvulus (GV) is a life-threatening condition that warrants prompt diagnosis and treatment. GV is a radiologic diagnosis. The role of preoperative upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGIE) for individuals with radiologically confirmed GV is poorly defined. Our objective was to assess the diagnostic yield of UGIE in the preoperative evaluation of patients presenting with radiologically confirmed GV. METHODS: Retrospective review of all adult patients undergoing surgery for GV between July 1996 and August 2016 has been carried out. We performed analyses evaluating dia

Comparison of postoperative pain and inflammation reaction in dogs undergoing preventive laparoscopic-assisted and incisional gastropexy.

This study compared the effects of postoperative pain and inflammation reaction after preventive laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy (LAG) and incisional gastropexy (IG) in 10 clinically normal Beagles. Surgical time, incision length, visual analog scale (VAS) score, University of Melbourne Pain Scale (UMPS) score, and plasma C-reactive protein (CRP), plasma cortisol (COR), and serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were evaluated. The VAS and UMPS scores and COR and IL-6 levels were recorded at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 18 and 24 hr after surgery. CRP level was recorded at 12, 24 and 48 hr after surgery.

Incidence of gastric dilatation-volvulus following a splenectomy in 238 dogs.

There is contradicting information in the veterinary literature regarding canine splenectomy and the increased risk for subsequent gastric dilatation-volvulus. The main purpose of this study was to determine the rate of occurrence of gastric dilatation-volvulus following splenectomy in medium to large breed dogs compared with a control group undergoing other abdominal procedures. Follow-up was performed by reviewing the medical records and conducting phone interviews. Weight, gender, and presence of a hemoabdomen at the time of surgery were not significantly associated with occurrence of gastr

[Acute gastric volvulus: late complication of Nissen fundoplication. Report of two cases and review of the literature].

BACKGROUND: Gastric volvulus can be classified according to etiology as primary or secondary, according to anatomy as or mesenteroaxial, and according to onset as acute or chronic. Management of secondary gastric volvulus acute should always be surgery and the choice of surgical procedure for treatment is chosen according to etiology. Adherolysis and extraction of foreign bodies (suture, mesh, and gastric band) are important in those cases associated with previous abdominal surgery. Nissen fundoplication is a safe and effective procedure. Severe late complications of laparoscopic Nissen fundop
