Patients "At Risk" of Suffering from Persistent Complaints after Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: The Role of Coping, Mood Disorders, and Post-Traumatic Stress.

Although most patients recover fully following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), a minority (15-25%) of all patients develop persistent post-traumatic complaints (PTC) that interfere with the resumption of previous activities. An early identification of patients who are at risk for PTC is currently performed by measuring the number of complaints in the acute phase. However, only part of this group will actually develop persisting complaints, stressing the need for studies on additional risk factors. This study aimed to compare this group of patients with many complaints with patients with fe

Posttraumatic stress symptoms and posttraumatic stress disorder in adolescents exposed to continuous traumatic stress in Sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Continuous traumatic stress (CTS) exposure describes extended and ongoing collective trauma exposure that is associated with potential future danger and threat to the community. CTS has generated debate in the context of current definitions of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the DSM-5. Prevalence data on posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and PTSD in adolescents aged 10 to 24 years following CTS exposure in Sub-Saharan Africa are lacking. This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to address this gap. We also synthesized evidence on other trauma-related mental disorde

Mild traumatic brain injury increases vulnerability to post-traumatic stress disorder in rats and the possible role of hippocampal DNA methylation.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical studies have established that patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are at an increased risk for developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suggesting that mTBI increases vulnerability to subsequent PTSD onset. However, preclinical animal studies investigating this link remain scarce, and the specific biological mechanism through which mTBI increases vulnerability to PTSD is largely unknown. METHODS: In this study, we modeled mTBI in rats using a mild, closed-head, weight-drop injury, followed 72 h later by exposure to single prolonged stress (SPS) to

Effectiveness of Psychotherapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Subjects Suffering from Traumatic Brain Injuries After Motor Vehicle Accidents.

Background and Objectives: PTSD and traumatic brain injury (TBI) frequently co-occur in survivors of combat exposure, blasts, assaults, or motor vehicle accidents (MVAs), yet the impact of TBI on the psychotherapy outcomes for PTSD, especially in civilians, remains underexplored and frequently underestimated. Methods: This study focused on analysis of the effectiveness of psychotherapies (trauma-focused: prolonged exposure (PE); non-trauma-focused: self-efficacy-focused cognitive therapy (SEF-CT)) in individuals with PTSD, comparing those with and without TBIs. The data of 45 PTSD patients wit

Dementia in military and veteran populations: a review of risk factors-traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, deployment, and sleep.

The military population face a unique set of risk factors that may increase the risk of being diagnosed with dementia. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have a higher prevalence in this group in comparison to the civilian population. By delving into the individual relationships between TBI and dementia, and PTSD and dementia, we are able to better explore dementia in the military and veteran populations. While there are some inconsistencies in results, the TBI-dementia association has become more widely accepted. Moderate-to-severe TBI has been found to inc

Associations Between Maternal Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Events With Child Psychopathology: Results From a Prospective Longitudinal Study.

Introduction: Exposure to interpersonal violence (IPV) can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in mothers, and in turn adversely affect the mother-child relationship during early development, as well as the mental health of their children. Our objectives are to assess: (1) the association of maternal IPV-PTSD to child psychopathology, (2) the association of maternal IPV independently of PTSD to child psychopathology, and (3) the relationship between child exposure to violence to the psychopathology of these children. Methods: We used data from the longitudinal Geneva Early Childhood

Re-traumatization Cycle: Sexual Abuse, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Sexual Risk Behaviors among Club Drug Users.

Background: Club drug users are high risk and vulnerable population for adverse drug-related consequences and sexual risk behaviors. Few investigations have addressed the possible interrelationship between early trauma and PTSD among young club drug using populations. Objective: Exposure to traumatic experiences - especially in childhood, has been linked to risk behaviors exposure and substance use disorder. This study aimed to assess and compare drug use patterns and the presence of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) experiences among ecstasy and LSD users with and without Posttraumatic Stress Diso

Decreases in White Matter Integrity of Ventro-Limbic Pathway Linked to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is commonly observed in military service members with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI); however, the relationship between mTBI and PTSD is complex and not well understood. The present study aims to elucidate a link between the degree of alteration in limbic system-related white matter tracts and PTSD symptoms in an mTBI population. Diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) with probabilistic tractography of the fronto-limbic pathways revealed decreased white matter integrity in the uncinate fasciculus in those with co-morbid mTBI and PTSD (n = 34), relative to thos

Sleep Quality Disturbances Are Associated with White Matter Alterations in Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Sleep disturbances are strongly associated with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD and mTBI have been linked to alterations in white matter (WM) microstructure, but whether poor sleep quality has a compounding effect on WM remains largely unknown. We evaluated sleep and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) data from 180 male post-9/11 veterans diagnosed with (1) PTSD (n = 38), (2) mTBI (n = 25), (3) comorbid PTSD+mTBI (n = 94), and (4) a control group with neither PTSD nor mTBI (n = 23). We compared sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality

[Magneto-encephalographic (MEG) brain recordings during traumatic memory recall in women with post-traumatic stress disorder: A pilot study].

AIM OF THE STUDY: The experiment studied the effects of a short duration exposure to traumatic memories using magneto-encephalography (MEG). PATIENTS: Nine right-handed DSM-4 PTSD patients were recruited from a unit for anxiety disorders and an organisation supporting victims of violence. In order to have a homogeneous sample, we included only women who suffered from civilian PTSD. Exclusion criteria were co-morbid major medical illness, metallic dental prostheses that would interfere in the magnetic measurement, and current drug treatment. All participants were free from neurological disease

The association of traumatic events and posttraumatic stress disorder with greater eating disorder and comorbid symptom severity in residential eating disorder treatment centers.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic events, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related symptoms are commonly associated with eating disorders (ED). Several clinical features indicative of a more severe and complex course have been associated with traumatized ED patients, especially those with PTSD, who may be more likely admitted to residential treatment (RT). Research in this population is sparse but of increasing interest. METHOD: Adult participants (96.7% female) with EDs entering RT (n = 642) at seven sites in the U.S. completed validated self-report assessments of ED, PTSD, major depression, stat

Post-traumatic stress disorders among sexual and gender-based violence survivors in war-affected zones in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in war-affected zones is a pressing public health issue, as these individuals often endure compounded trauma from both the violence they experience and the broader context of conflict. Post-traumatic stress disorders are overlooked in Ethiopian society, despite the country having the greatest number of victims of violence and its detrimental effects on mental health. This study aimed to explore Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Survivors attending one

Post-traumatic stress disorders among children and adolescents in conflict-affected zones of Amhara region, February 2022.

BACKGROUND: To date, conflict is causing extreme social crises worldwide, with children representing the most vulnerable group, often experiencing severe trauma and violence in conflict-ridden areas. Posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSDs) are the most widely reported psychological problem in the aftermath of conflict. However, less attention has been given to children living in conflict-prone areas of the world. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to assess posttraumatic stress disorders among children and adolescents in conflict-affected zones of the Amhara region in Ethiopia from January to

Comorbid alcohol use and post-traumatic stress disorders: Pharmacotherapy with aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 inhibitors versus current agents.

The increased risk of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is well-documented. Compared to individuals with PTSD or AUD alone, those with co-existing PTSD and AUD exhibit greater symptom severity, poorer quality of life, and poorer treatment outcomes. Although the treatment of comorbid AUD is vital for the effective management of PTSD, there is a lack of evidence on how to best treat comorbid PTSD and AUD, and currently, there are no FDA-approved treatments for the PTSD-AUD comorbidity. The objective of this manuscript is to review the evidence o

Psychophysiological reactivity to traumatic and abandonment scripts in borderline personality and posttraumatic stress disorders: a preliminary report.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a highly prevalent and disabling condition linked to early stressors including traumatic abuse and abandonment. While much work has addressed traumatic events in childhood, little is known about the biological sequelae of BPD including how this disorder may be differentiated from other stress-related disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this study was to investigate psychophysiological effects of different types of stressful reminders in BPD and in PTSD. Psychophysiological measures including heart rate, skin conductanc

Structural brain correlates in major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder: a diffusion tensor imaging meta-analysis.

The high comorbidity of major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety disorders (ANX), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) complicates the study of their structural neural correlates, particularly in white matter (WM) alterations. Using fractional anisotropy (FA), this meta-analysis aimed to identify both unique and shared WM characteristics for these disorders by comparing them with healthy controls (HC). The aggregated sample size across studies includes 3,661 individuals diagnosed with MDD, ANX, or PTSD and 3,140 HC participants. The whole-brain analysis revealed significant FA reductions

Parent and child agreement for acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychopathology in a prospective study of children and adolescents exposed to single-event trauma.

Examining parent-child agreement for Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in children and adolescents is essential for informing the assessment of trauma-exposed children, yet no studies have examined this relationship using appropriate statistical techniques. Parent-child agreement for these disorders was examined by structured interview in a prospective study of assault and motor vehicle accident (MVA) child survivors, assessed at 2-4 weeks and 6 months post-trauma. Children were significantly more likely to meet criteria for ASD, as well as other ASD and PTS
