Association of current and remitted bipolar disorders with health-related quality of life: Findings from a nationally representative sample in the US.

BACKGROUND: The associations of current and remitted bipolar disorder (BD) with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) have been under-studied, and we aim to address these gaps. METHODS: The 2012-2013 National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III (NESARC III) surveyed a nationally representative sample of non-institutionalized adults in the US. Using DSM-5 criteria, three groups were operationalized as: 1) adults who met criteria for BD in the past year (i.e., current BD; n = 566 unweighted); and 2) adults who met criteria for BD previously but not in the past year (i.

Alexithymia, affective disorders and substance abuse: possible cross-relationships.

Alexithymia is a syndrome manifesting affective, cognitive, and perceptual social defects, which include diminished affective-interpretive abilities. These abilities have been observed to be decreased in opiate abuse, major depression, and premenstrual depressive disorder, but increased in cocaine abuse and manic states. Conditions associated with decreased affective-interpretive abilities are also associated with decreased central catecholamine levels. Conversely, conditions associated with increased interpretive abilities have increased central catecholamine levels. Central catecholamine may

Motivations, substance use and other correlates amongst property and violent offenders who regularly inject drugs.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence, correlates and motivations for the commission of property and violent crime amongst a sample of people who inject drugs (PWID). METHOD: Data were obtained from the 2013 Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS), which includes a cross-sectional sample of 887 PWID. RESULTS: Eighteen percent of PWID had committed a property offence and 3% had committed a violent offence in the month preceding interview. Opioid dependence (AOR 2.57, 95% CI 1.29-5.10) and age (AOR 0.96, 95% CI 0.93-0.99) were found to be the strongest correlates of property crime. The majority of

Gender and the relationship between marital status and first onset of mood, anxiety and substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Prior research on whether marriage is equally beneficial to the mental health of men and women is inconsistent due to methodological variation. This study addresses some prior methodological limitations and investigates gender differences in the association of first marriage and being previously married, with subsequent first onset of a range of mental disorders. METHOD: Cross-sectional household surveys in 15 countries from the WHO World Mental Health survey initiative (n=34493), with structured diagnostic assessment of mental disorders using the Composite International Diagnosti

From symptoms to neurobiology: pathological gambling in the light of the new classification in DSM-5.

Pathological gambling (PG), as defined until recently in the DSM-IV, shares many clinical characteristics with substance use disorders (SUDs), such as craving and loss of control. Moreover, an increasing body of literature also revealed neurobiological similarities between PG and substance-related addictions. Further, specific treatments for SUD are also effective in pathological gamblers. These observations resulted in a recent change in the diagnostic classification of PG in DSM-5: maladaptive gambling behavior is now subsumed as 'gambling disorder' (GD) under the category 'substance-related

Psychiatric sequelae of phencyclidine abuse.

Phencyclidine use has been noted to produce a psychosis of several week's duration in a small fraction of users. Descriptions of the premorbid personalities of those who became psychotic resemble descriptions of LSD and marijuana users who experienced prolonged psychiatric difficulty. In addition, the psychosis produced can often be recognized as a "hallucinogen" psychosis. Certain features of the phencyclidine psychosis, namely the neurologic abnormalities, dose-related severity of symptoms, and regularity of the length of illness, are not noted with other psychedelic drugs, leading to the co

Transcriptomic markers of psychoactive substance addiction in peripheral blood.

The regular use of psychoactive substances, resulting in substance use disorders, represents a significant public health concern globally. Due to genetic variability and the substantial impact of environmental factors, identifying specific genes associated with predisposition to addictive behaviors presents a significant challenge. Regular exposure to psychoactive substances is known to change gene expression levels in the brain regions for reward and motivation. These changes affect the dopaminergic, glutamatergic, and cannabinoid systems of the brain. The existing data on cellular gene expre

Characteristics of a treatment-seeking population in outpatient addiction treatment centers in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Baseline patients' characteristics are critical for treatment planning, as these can be moderators of treatment effects. In Mexico, information on treatment seekers with substance use disorders is scarce and limited to demographic characteristics. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents and analyses demographic characteristics, substance use related problems, clinical features, and addiction severity in a sample of treatment seekers from the first multi-site randomized clinical trial implemented in the Mexican Clinical Trials Network on Addiction and Mental Health. METHODS: A total of 120

Measuring pain medication expectancies in adults treated for substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. prevalence of misuse of prescription opioid analgesics has increased substantially over the past decade but research on the factors influencing misuse of these medications remains preliminary. In the literature on alcohol, marijuana and stimulants, substance-related expectancies have been found to predict level of substance use. A similar line of research is needed to better understand reasons for misusing pain medications. METHODS: This study utilized a sample of adults presenting to a large residential addictions treatment program (N=351). Participants were administered

Presence of illegal drugs in drivers involved in fatal road traffic accidents in Spain.

This study investigated the presence of illegal drugs in the blood of 285 fatally injured drivers in Spain. Illegal drugs were detected in 10.2% of all samples. Illicit drugs alone were detected in 2.5% and together with other substances in 7.7%. Cocaine was the most common drug detected. The mean number (+/- S.D.) of substances detected was 2.6 +/- 1.2: consisting of 46 illegal drugs, 14 alcohol cases and 16 medicines. Three concentration levels of the different substances have been established: low, medium and high-toxic. In 68.9% of the samples in which an illegal drug was detected, a subst

Role of oxytocin in the neuroadaptation to drugs of abuse.

Oxytocin (OXT), a neurohypophyseal hormone, has a wide range of behavioral effects outside its classic peripheral endocrine functions. OXT involvement in adaptive central nervous system processes has been demonstrated as an inhibitory, amnestic action on learning and memory in different paradigms. Because adaptation and learning are likely to be involved in the neural events leading to drug tolerance and dependence, the question logically arose whether OXT is able to influence the development of tolerance of and dependence on abused drugs. In this review, we summarize our results on the effect

Unrecognized drug dependence and withdrawal in the elderly.

The clinical diagnosis of drug abuse is frequently omitted from the differential diagnosis of transient fevers, arrhythmias and changes in mental status in the elderly despite the high risk of iatrogenic dependence in this age group. In pursuit of symptomatic relief from unrecognized depressions and from the chronic ailments of advancing age, the elderly receive many medications from numerous physicians. Therapeutic interventions are often duplicated or contradictory and result in the co-administration of tranquilizers, sedatives and analgesics. The result may be dependence which the patient a
