Graph-based feature extraction and classification of wet and dry cough signals: a machine learning approach.

This article proposes a unique approach to bring out the potential of graph-based features to reveal the hidden signatures of wet (WE) and d … associated airflow dynamics. A better distinguishability between WE and DE is obtained through the supervised machine learning techniques (MLTs)-quadratic support vector machine and neural net pattern recognition (NN), when compared to the unsupervised MLT, principal component analysis. The 93.90% classification accuracy with a precision of 97.00% suggests NN as a better cl …

Embodied movement markers of alliance ruptures in psychotherapy: A machine learning study.

OBJECTIVE: Alliance ruptures are central to psychotherapy process and outcome, yet therapists often fail to detect them in real time, particularly withdrawal ruptures, which tend to manifest subtly. This study examined whether machine learning applied to moment-to-moment movement dynamics during psychotherapy sessions can identify markers of alliance ruptures. METHOD: We analyzed 474 videotaped psychotherapy sessions from 86 dyads drawn from a randomized controlled trial for major depressive disorder. Alliance ruptures were coded using the Rupture Resolution Rating System (3RS). Patient and t

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry for differential identification of adult Schistosoma worms.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a major neglected tropical disease that affects up to 250 million individuals worldwide. The diagnosis of human schistosomiasis is mainly based on the microscopic detection of the parasite's eggs in the feces (i.e., for Schistosoma mansoni or Schistosoma japonicum) or urine (i.e., for Schistosoma haematobium) samples. However, these techniques have limited sensitivity, and microscopic expertise is waning outside endemic areas. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) has become the gold standard diagnostic meth

Early Prediction of Septic Shock in Emergency Department Using Serum Metabolites.

Early recognition of septic shock is crucial for improving clinical management and patient outcomes, especially in the emergency department (ED). This study conducted serum metabolomic profiling on ED patients diagnosed with septic shock (n = 32) and those without septic shock (n = 92) using a high-resolution mass spectrometer. By implementing a supervised machine learning algorithm, a prediction model based on a panel of metabolites achieved an accuracy of 87.8%. Notably, when employed on a low-resolution instrument, the model maintained its predictive performance with an accuracy of 84.2%. T…

Clustering and Annotation of T Cell Receptor Repertoires.

Immunological protection against a wide variety of pathogens is largely mediated by the diverse and dynamic T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire, a crucial component of the adaptive immune system. An encounter with infectious agents stimulates specific T cells to initiate a direct immune response to combat intruders. Hence, the TCR repertoire may conceal crucial information regarding current and past infections and might assist in the development and monitoring of vaccines. To unlock its knowledge, we describe a computational workflow involving both supervised and unsupervised machine learning tec…

Neural collaborative filtering for unsupervised mitral valve segmentation in echocardiography.

The segmentation of the mitral valve annulus and leaflets specifies a crucial first step to establish a machine learning pipeline that can support physicians in performing multiple tasks, e.g. diagnosis of mitral valve diseases, surgical planning, and intraoperative procedures. Current methods for mitral valve segmentation on 2D echocardiography videos require extensive interaction with annotators and perform poorly on low-quality and noisy videos. We propose an automated and unsupervised method for the mitral valve segmentation based on a low dimensional embedding of the echocardiography vide

Predicting acute odynophagia during lung cancer radiotherapy using observations derived from patient-centred nursing care.

During radiotherapy, lung cancer patients commonly experience pain while swallowing (odynophagia) of food and drink. Observations from patient-centred nursing practice have been used to generate predictive models for odynophagia needing prescription pain medication during external beam lung radiotherapy for non-small cell and small-cell lung cancer. Three multivariate logistic models were evaluated in repeat cross-validation: a manual-stepwise model and two supervised machine learning models. Overall predictive performance was good. Correct classification rates ranged from 0.82 to 0.84, and ar…

Predicting Longitudinal Caries Trajectories from Childhood to Early Adulthood.

Prior studies have used traditional trajectory analyses to classify caries progression; however, none have applied machine learning (ML) to predict caries trajectories from childhood to early adulthood. The aims of our study are 1) to use unsupervised ML to perform trajectory analysis by clustering the longitudinal caries data into distinct trajectory groups and 2) to utilize supervised ML to predict trajectory group membership from behavioral/dietary, fluoride, and sociodemographic variables. This study was conducted using longitudinal data from 560 Iowa Fluoride Study participants. Trajector

Adversarial Erasing Enhanced Multiple Instance Learning (siMILe): Discriminative Identification of Oligomeric Protein Structures in Single Molecule Localization Microscopy.

Single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) achieves nanoscale imaging of complex protein structures in the cell. However, the ability to capture structural variability across cell conditions (cell lines, gene expression, treatment) from 3D point cloud SMLM data remains limited. We present siMILe, a weakly supervised multiple instance learning machine learning method to close this gap in interpretable subcellular discovery. siMILe identifies condition-specific changes in protein assemblies by leveraging their shape and network features, without requiring structure-level supervision. siMILe

A multimodal EMG and IMU dataset for assessing the quality of exercises designed for spatially constrained environments.

Regular physical training is essential for maintaining physical fitness in environments where exercise must be performed in limited space and without direct professional supervision. In such settings, degraded exercise execution may reduce training effectiveness and increase injury risk. To address this challenge, this study aimed to develop a methodology for collecting and processing multimodal data to support autonomous, AI-driven feedback systems. We collected data from 20 healthy adults performing a structured protocol of specialized, whole-body exercises designed for spatially constrained
