[Electropulse therapy in the early postoperative rehabilitation period after reconstructive and plastic surgery on fallopian tubes].

The efficiency of sinusoidal modulated currents applied to the vaginosacral region in the early postoperative rehabilitation period after plastic and reconstructive surgery on the fallopian tubes was assessed in 30 women aged from 21 to 38 (mean 29.3+/-0.6) years. All of them had endoscopically diagnosed tubuloperitoneal infertility. Treatment with sinusoidally-modulated current in he early postoperative period had beneficial effect on the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle in 55.6%, on the hypothalamo-pituitary-ovarian axis in 23.3%, on hemodynamics in the small pelvis organs in 46.7%, on ut

The combined plastic surgery/physical medicine and rehabilitation amputee clinic at the University of Western Ontario.

Since the autumn of 2001, a multidisciplinary plastic surgery (PS) and physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR) outpatient amputee clinic has been in place at St Joseph's Health Centre/Parkwood Hospital in London, Ontario. To date, more than 140 new patients have been seen in combined consultations. The present paper reviews the demographics, interventions and outcomes of the patients seen between 2001 and 2005. The majority of primary PMR patients had problems that prevented optimal use of their lower extremity prostheses. These problems included nonhealing pressure ulcers, infections, pain

Continuing medical education in emergency plastic surgery for referring physicians: a prospective assessment of educational needs.

BACKGROUND: Continuing medical education for referring physicians is an essential part of raising the profile of plastic surgery and improving patient care. The authors conducted a prospective cohort study to assess the educational needs of emergency and primary care physicians who refer patients to the on-call plastic surgeon. METHODS: The following information was collected for telephone referrals from emergency and primary care physicians over a 1-year period: date, location of referral center, population of referral center, distance between referral center and tertiary care hospital, pati

Paulus Aegineta, a seventh century encyclopedist and surgeon: his role in the history of plastic surgery.

Paulus Aegineta (625-690 ad), born on the island of Aegina, practiced medicine at Alexandria. The last of the eclectic Greek compilers in the Byzantine period, he wrote an Epitome of medicine in seven books. The sixth book, which is considered the best section of his work, is devoted mainly to surgery. The first edition, "editio princeps," of his Epitome was published in Greek by the Aldine press in Venice in 1528 and later translated into English for the Sydenham Society by Francis Adams of Banchory (1844-1847). Paulus was not only a compiler but also a competent and skillful surgeon. In addi

[Variants of plastic surgery using trapezoid adipose-cutaneous flaps in post-burn marginal deformities and contractures].

Most optimal methods of plasty with the maximum use of intact skin of a healthy leaf and adjacent area as a trapezoid cellulo-cutaneous flap are proposed. Different variants of the operation are proposed as one-, two-, three- and many-flaps plasty with local tissues and one- and two-flaps combined plasty. The choice is dependent on the localization and degree of contracture. Plasty by the methods proposed allows to adequately eliminate marginal contractures of large vessels, syndactylia, microstomia and narrowing of the lid slit.

[Transport of finger parts using an abdominal skin flap for finger and thumb reconstructive plastic surgery].

1st. With the aid of an abdominal or an inguinal flap it is possible to reconstruct a finger with sensibility by transporting islands of palmar skin with the corresponding nerve to any amputation stump of the hand. At least three operations are necessary. Parts of bones, joints and tendons may be included in the transported part from the hand. 2nd. These digits are rather bulky. Mobility depends on the preserved joints. 3rd. This method should only be used for thumb reconstruction or to achieve a simple two digit grip. 4th. In children growth of transported bones remains undisturbed.

MRI reveals glioma surgery-induced brain network disruption and compensatory plasticity.

Glioma surgery, while critical for tumor control, often disrupts brain network integrity, leading to postoperative neurological deficits. This study employed resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to assess functional and structural connectivity changes in 28 patients with supratentorial gliomas before and after surgical resection. We observed widespread reductions in functional connectivity (FC), regional homogeneity (ReHo), and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) after surgery, primarily involving sensorimotor and language networks. DTI revealed

From Scar to Function: Plastic Surgery in the Management of an Extreme Hand Contracture in a Child.

Children are more prone to develop post-burn contractures than adults, even when optimal initial burn care is provided. In severe cases, such contractures may lead to significant deformities and functional impairments. We present a case of a pediatric patient referred to a plastic surgeon at the age of two by his parents, a few months after sustaining third-degree burns to both hands. Although the burns had healed, extensive scarring resulted in severe contractures, leaving the child's hands tightly clenched and preventing him from extending, flexing, or moving his fingers, thereby severely im

Trends in Outcomes and Variation by Race and Ethnicity in Pediatric Plastic Surgery in the United States.

UNLABELLED: The American College of Surgeons' National Surgical Quality Improvement Project-Pediatric Data manages a multicenter dataset for monitoring outcomes in pediatric surgical care. We explored trends in outcomes in the most frequently sampled current procedural terminology codes related to craniofacial and cleft lip and palate (CLP) surgical procedures over a 7-year period. METHODS: We used National Surgical Quality Improvement Project-Pediatric Data on 28,147 pediatric patients who underwent plastic surgical procedures between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2018. Eighteen relevant

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder: body dysmorphic disorder in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Despite the fact that up to 15% of patients in an aesthetic surgery practice have body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), little has been written about the condition in the oculoplastic literature. The authors describe 3 patients with suspected BDD who presented with perceived periocular defects. To appear "Asian," a 39-year-old Hispanic woman underwent over 30 surgeries. She developed disfiguring scars and lagophthalmos with corneal scarring, remained unsatisfied, and tragically committed suicide. A 52-year-old woman with moderate dermatochalasis underwent a blepharoplasty to improve her vision and a

Reconstructive and restorative cues improve public perception on the value of plastic and reconstructive surgeries.

BACKGROUND: Persistent public misconceptions of plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS), ambiguity between cosmetic versus reconstructive surgical procedures, and subjective interpretation of aesthetics can result in undervaluing of the field. Our study analyzes how patient context (cosmetic or reconstructive/restorative cues) affect public perception of outcomes and value of surgery. METHODS: We distributed Qualtrics™ surveys to laypersons via Amazon Mechanical Turk. Demographics were self-reported. The survey presented a series of pre- and post-operative photographs of PRS surgeries alongs

Clinical Practice Patterns in Facelift Surgery: A 15-Year Review of Continuous Certification Tracer Data from the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates change in practice patterns in facelift surgery based on a 15-year review of tracer data collected by the American Board of Plastic Surgery as part of the Continuous Certification process. METHODS: Tracer data for facelift was reviewed from 2006 to 2021. The 15-year collection period was divided into an "early cohort (EC)" from 2006 to 2014 and a "recent cohort (RC)" from 2015 to 2021. RESULTS: Of 3400 facelifts (1710 EC/1690 RC) performed, 18% were done in hospital and 76% were done in an accredited office facility. Ninety one percent of patients were female
