Sympathetic blockade of isolated limbs by intravenous guanethidine.

As a result of experience at the Montreal General Hospital, it has been found that intravenous guanethidine blockade of extremities has therapeutic, prophylactic and diagnostic value in conditions where the aetiology is a disorder of sympathetic nervous conduction. The properties of guanethidine, namely its selective action on blocking the sympathetic nervous system peripherally, together with its long half time and rapid tissue fixation, render it a very useful drug in techniques where an isolated limb is blocked with guanethidine. Experience on a 18-month basis suggests that the procedure of…

Brain-heart interactions: physiology and clinical implications.

The brain controls the heart directly through the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system, which consists of multi-synaptic pathways from myocardial cells back to peripheral ganglionic neurons and further to central preganglionic and premotor neurons. Cardiac function can be profoundly altered by the reflex activation of cardiac autonomic nerves in response to inputs from baro-, chemo-, nasopharyngeal and other receptors as well as by central autonomic commands, including those associated with stress, physical activity, arousal and sleep. In the clinical settin

A new wrinkle: skin manifestations of aging may relate to autonomic dysfunction.

Various mechanisms have been argued for skin wrinkling, one of the hallmarks of aging. We hypothesize that chronic sympathetic bias is a previously unrecognized mechanism for wrinkling. In the acute setting of water immersion, reversible skin wrinkling is a well-known reflex mediated by the autonomic nervous system. We postulate that skin wrinkling results as a local maladaptive manifestation of a global chronic sympathetic bias that emerges during aging. The persistence of such changes may induce additional compensatory remodeling to cause permanent alteration of the skin. Sympatholytic agent

Hemodynamic effects of a clonidine-induced decrease in sympathetic tone in patients with cirrhosis.

A decrease in plasma noradrenaline--a reflection of sympathetic nervous system activity--by clonidine, a centrally acting alpha 2-agonist, could reduce the hyperdynamic circulation observed in cirrhosis and may thereby decrease portal hypertension. Plasma noradrenaline concentration and plasma renin activity as well as systemic and splanchnic hemodynamics were measured in 12 patients with cirrhosis and ascites before and after administration of either 150 micrograms of clonidine or placebo. Plasma noradrenaline concentration significantly decreased in all patients after clonidine administratio…

Evaluating Associations and Contributing Factors of Descending Pain Modulation and Autonomic Nervous System Activity in Chronic and Nonchronic Knee Pain.

BACKGROUND: Central sensitization in individuals with knee pain is associated with altered autonomic nervous system activity and descending … ONS: Patients with nCKP exhibited significant relationships between conditioned pain modulation and sympathetic nervous system activity, suggesting that the phenomenon of descending pain modulation was intact. Conversely, in patients with CKP, those associations were absent, and sympathetic activity was rather influenced by pain catastrophizing and the number of pain sites. …

Programmed symptoms: disparate effects united by purpose.

Central sensitivity syndromes (CSS) share features of similar multiple symptoms, virtually unknown mechanisms and lack of effective treatments. The CSS nomenclature was chosen over alternatives because it focused on a putative physiological mechanism of central sensitization common to disorders such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, vulvodynia and temporomandibular disorder. Increasing evidence from multiple biological systems suggests a further development. In this new model central sensitization is part of a ensemble that includes also the symptoms of widespread pain, fatigue, unref

Sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric regulation of the gastrointestinal vasculature in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) under normal and postprandial conditions.

The control of the gastrointestinal hyperemia that occurs after feeding in most animals is of fundamental importance for the subsequent absorption, metabolism and redistribution of nutrients. Yet, in fish, it has received little attention and the nature of it is far from clear. We sought to investigate the importance of extrinsic and intrinsic innervation of the gastrointestinal tract in the regulation of gastrointestinal blood flow in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The contribution of the extrinsic innervation, i.e. by the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system, was examined…

Central regulation of the heart in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Diabetic heart disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A major yet frequently under-recognized component of diabetic heart disease is cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN), a condition characterized by dysregulated sympathetic and parasympathetic drive to the heart. Current pharmacological treatments for diabetic CAN are often ineffective, having been extrapolated from other health conditions. These therapies predominantly target the peripheral symptoms of elevated sympathetic activity, whilst largely neglecting its origins in sym

Autonomic modulation by low-intensity focused ultrasound stimulation of the vagus nerve.

Autonomic nervous system activity in primary Raynaud's phenomenon: Heart rate variability, plasma catecholamines and [123 I]MIBG heart scintigraphy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Primary Raynaud's phenomenon (pRP) is characterized by an exaggerated response to cold, resulting in the whitening typically of the fingers and toes. The patients are generally perceived as healthy individuals with a benign condition. However, the condition has been associated with increased cardiovascular mortality and changes in autonomic nervous system activity. This study aimed to investigate whether pRP is associated with pervasive changes in autonomic nervous activity. The hypothesis was that patients with pRP have increased sympathetic nervous activity. METHODS: The

[Impact of different anesthetic states on acupuncture-mediated modulation of autonomic nervous system in animal studies].

Acupuncture therapy has a positive role in the prevention and treatment of some related diseases by regulating autonomic nervous function. But it has been found in experimental researches that the modulatory effects of acupuncture on autonomic nervous system are not always consistent with each other. Because in the animal studies on the mechanism of acupuncture intervention, the anesthetic agent has to be used and definitely affects the activities of the autonomic nervous system while playing its pharmacological effects. Hence, it is very significant to explore the rational application of anes

Genetics-based manipulation of adipose tissue sympathetic innervation.

There is renewed interest in leveraging the thermogenic capacity of brown adipose tissue (BAT) and browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) to improve energy balance and prevent obesity. In addition to these effects on energy expenditure, both BAT and WAT secrete large numbers of hormones and cytokines that play important roles in maintaining metabolic health. Both BAT and WAT are densely innervated by the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and this innervation is crucial for BAT thermogenesis and WAT browning, making it a potentially interesting target for manipulating energy balance and treatmen…

Cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical schwannoma is a benign peripheral nerve tumor specifically developing from Schwann cells. Cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma is rare. Following a case report, the authors describe its specific radiological and histological characteristics. Treatment is surgical. CLINICAL CASE: A 56-year-old woman consulted for an isolated left lateral cervical mass of several years' standing, but with recently associated pharyngeal discomfort. Cervical CT revealed a vascularized retrostyloid mass with venous-time enhancement, inducing anterior displacement of the jugulo-carotid axis.

Physiology, assessment, and disorders of the pupil.

Proper examination of the pupil provides an objective measure of the integrity of the pregeniculate afferent visual pathway and allows assessment of sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation to the eye. Infrared videography and pupillography are increasingly used to study the dynamic behavior of the pupil in common disorders, such as Horner's syndrome and tonic pupil.
