Laryngocele is an unusual laryngeal disease caused by an abnormal dilatation of the saccule of the laryngeal ventricule. Infection results in laryngopyocele. We report a case of laryngopyocele discovered in a patient presenting with fever, an inflammatory mass, dysphagia and minimal respiratory distress. Diagnosis was established from direct laryngoscopy and CT-scan. Early treatment consisted in antibiotics and needle aspiration followed by external excision. Twenty-two patients 1 year of age or younger were diagnosed as having unilateral or bilateral vocal cord paralyses between 1962 and 1985. There was a marked male predominance, and 12 of the paralyses were bilateral. Congenital neurological malformations were the cause in six patients, birth trauma in five, surgery in four, syphilis in one, and six cases were idiopathic. CASE: A 48-year-old woman underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion at C5/6. Extubation was performed immediately after surgery. Tachycardia, limb tremor, and panic attack developed approximately 4 hours after surgery at 16:15. Thirty minutes later, cessation of respiration occurred at 16:50. An experienced anesthesiologist attempted intubation but was unsuccessful because of laryngopharyngeal edema at the C2 level.
