Thoracic endovascular aortic repair for traction-induced aortic avulsion injury in neurofibromatosis type 1.

Rupture of intercostal artery aneurysms has been reported in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1. Many reports have demonstrated the efficacy of endovascular interventions. Herein, we present a case of successful treatment with thoracic endovascular aortic repair for traction-induced avulsion injury of the previously embolized intercostal artery. We further report the potential postoperative risk of rapid aneurysmal enlargement, possibly owing to changes in the thoracic arterial regional network. Even after successful treatment, vascular surgeons should pay attention to other aneurysmal eve…

A single centre experience using internal traction sutures in managing long gap oesophageal atresia.

AIM: Thoracoscopically placed internal traction sutures (ITS) for the initial management of long gap oesophageal atresia (LGOA), not amenable to primary anastomosis, was first described in 2015. Here we describe our experience using ITS both thoracoscopically and at thoracotomy where the gap between upper and lower oesophagus is too wide for primary anastomosis. METHOD: The case notes of all infants treated with ITS for oesophageal atresia (01/10/2015 to 01/12/2019) were reviewed. Gaps considered too wide for an anastomosis had ITS placed between the two pouches as described by Patkowski in 2…

Childhood outcome after correction of long-gap esophageal atresia by thoracoscopic external traction technique.

BACKGROUND: Thoracoscopic external traction technique (TTT) is a relatively new surgical intervention for patients with long-gap esophageal atresia (LGEA) that preserves the native esophagus. The major accomplishment with TTT is that esophageal repair can be achieved within days after birth. This study evaluates the childhood outcome in LGEA patients treated with TTT, including gastrointestinal outcome, nutritional status and Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). METHODS: A cohort study including all LGEA patients that underwent TTT between 2006-2017 was conducted. Patients and/or their par…

Elastics Selector Gauge as Orthodontics Device Applied to Inter-Maxillary Traction during Malocclusion Correction.

Elastics are the simplest device that can be used during a class correction in orthodontics, and despite the simplicity of a latex band, they are very effective and powerful. The resultant inter-maxillary force affects not only the teeth, but even the mandibular position, and consequently the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). The purpose of our work is to simplify the use of elastics, and to reduce the amount of inventory for orthodontists, because there is a lot of merceology available on the market, and different ways of using the elastics. The use of elastics in clinical practice is based on

Vitreoretinal traction and lamellar macular holes associated with cicatricial toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis: case series report.

PURPOSE: Inflammation due to retinal neuroepithelial necrotic granulomas of toxoplasmosis can extend to neighbor areas and may develop focal adhesions of the posterior hyaloid, to the surface vessels, and the margins or adjoining areas of retinochoroiditis plaques. These adhesions may develop vitreoretinal traction and retinal tears. Vitreoretinal traction may be macular (VMT) or extramacular depending on the location of the toxoplasmic plaques. Vitreomacular traction may follow anomalous posterior vitreous detachment. We report 7 cases of vitreoretinal traction (macular or peripheral) and the…

Changes in blood pressure and related autonomic function during cervical traction in healthy women.

Cervical traction is a physical therapy procedure frequently used to treat cervical disk lesions, cervical spondylosis, and cervical facet joint lesions. We have observed rare cases of side effects in elderly patients, but not in women younger than 30 years. In this pilot study, 96 young women were randomly divided into 3 groups to study the effect of cervical traction with different traction weights on blood pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability, and correlated autonomic adjustment. Cervical traction weight used was 10% of the patient's body weight in group A (n=32), 20% in group B (n=3…

Combination of skull traction with posterior C1-2 fusion for old C1-2 dislocations.

Between January 2003 and December 2009, 23 patients who had suffered old C1-2 dislocations, were surgically treated in our orthopedics department. Fifteen patients underwent direct posterior C1-2 fusion following pre-operative reduction by skull traction. In eight patients, reduction was achieved only by skull traction under general anesthesia, facilitated by manual hyperextension of the cervical spine and maintained by simultaneous posterior C1-2 fusion. Intra-operative traction was monitored using C-arm fluoroscopy and cortical somatosensory-evoked potentials. Posterior C1-2 fixation was ach…
