MMPI profiles in patients with headache or craniofacial pain: a comparative study.

Our purpose was to examine the MMPI profiles of 157 patients with chronic headache or facial pain. The following diagnostic groups were considered: tension-type headache (n = 44); migraine + cluster headache + chronic paroxysmal hemicrania (20); trigeminal neuralgia (7); atypical facial pain (AFP) (33); temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) (53). There were two control groups: C1 of 27 healthy individuals and C2 of 18 patients with chronic pain located elsewhere. A "Pain Index" was calculated (0-10) which quantified pattern, duration and frequency of pain. The Italian MMPI abbreviated vers

Subtypes of cocaine abusers: support for a type A-type B distinction.

The replicability and generalizability of a multidimensional alcoholism typological system was systematically assessed in 399 inpatient, outpatient, and non-treatment-seeking cocaine abusers. Two different cluster-analytic procedures supported the construct, concurrent, and predictive validity of the Type A-Type B distinction in cocaine abusers. Participants classified as Type B (33%) cocaine abusers exhibited higher rates of premorbid risk factors (family history, childhood behavior problems, personality, age of onset), more severe drug and alcohol abuse, more addiction-related psychosocial i

The classification of idiopathic spasmodic torticollis: three types based on social adaptation and frustration tolerance.

In this study, idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST) has been classfied into three types from the opinion of social adaptation and the differences of frustration tolerance. The three types were as follows: type I (overadaptive type), type II (maladaptive type), and type III (compatible type). Type I is a typical psychosomatic with high frustration tolerance. Type II is personality disorder with low frustration tolerance. In type III, frustration tolerance varies depending on social circumstances (i.e., different at home and at the office). In type I, the prognosis of ST is generally unfavorabl

Fraught with the utmost danger: the object relations of mothers who kill their children.

The author explores the psychodynamics of maternal filicide from an object relations perspective. Among psychotic women, the murder of the child reflects a critical interplay among the mother's neurobiology, constitution, developmental experiences, and complex internal object world. Two types of personality structure are discussed. For the disorganized type, the psychodynamic scenario involves attempts to contend with the danger of massive internal breakdown. For the organized type, the scenario involves attempts to contend with the danger of persecution and annihilation. For these women, phys

Identifying Splitting Through Sentiment Analysis.

In Kernerg's Object Relations Theory model of personality pathology, splitting, the mutual polarization of aspects of experience, is thought to result in a failure of identity integration. The authors sought to identify a clinician-independent, automated measure of splitting by examining 54 subjects' natural speech. Splitting in these individuals, recruited from the community, was investigated and evaluated with a shortened version of the Structured Interview of Personality Organization (STIPO-R). A type of automated sentiment textual analysis called VADER was applied to transcripts from the s

Recurrent Depression and Borderline Personality Disorder in a Patient with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a group of connective tissue disorders that most commonly causes joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility. Patients diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) frequently suffer from chronic pain and other comorbid conditions. In addition, there is an increased incidence of psychiatry conditions in this patient population, such as anxiety, depression, and personality disorders. We present the case of a 25-year-old female who presented to a community hospital with frequent thoughts of suicide and major depression. She was previously diagnosed

The prevalence of mental disorders among incarcerated adult men convicted of child sexual exploitation material offences.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the growing body of research on individuals convicted of child sexual exploitation material (CSEM), relatively little is known about the prevalence of mental disorders in this population. The aim of the present study was to describe the prevalence of mental disorders among individuals convicted of CSEM offenses. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined data from 66 individuals serving a sentence for CSEM offenses in the Austrian prison system who underwent a clinical assessment between 2002 and 2020. Diagnoses were based on the German version of the Structured Clinical

Understanding the dark side of personality in sex offenders considering the level of sexual violence.

This study examined the relationship between the actual level of physical violence in sexual offenses and dark triad, empathic and impulsive personality traits of their perpetrators. Sixty-four male perpetrators of sexual offenses without any serious mental illness were included. A 5-point Likert-type coding system based on Violence Profile for Current Offense was applied to assess the severity of physical violence of each sexual offense. Personality traits of dark triad (psychopathy, Machiavellianism, narcissism), trait empathy and impulsiveness were also evaluated. Multivariate analyses indi

Who Are You? The Study of Personality in Patients With Anterograde Amnesia.

Little is known about the role of declarative memory in the ongoing perception of one's personality. Seven individuals who developed a rare and severe type of anterograde amnesia following damage to their medial temporal lobes were identified from our neurological patient registry. We examined the stability of their personality ratings on the Big Five Inventory over five retest periods and assessed the accuracy of their ratings via analyses of self-caregiver agreement. The patients portrayed a stable sense of self over the course of 1 year. However, their self-ratings differed from those provi

CSF studies on alcoholism and related behaviours.

1. A defect in central serotonin metabolism may manifest itself in poor impulse control leading to attempts at suicide, violence towards others, and Type II alcohol abuse. 2. Studies reporting negative associations between low CSF levels of the serotonin metabolite 5-HIAA and personality traits of aggressiveness and hostility are reviewed. 3. We also studied pathological gamblers. They showed significantly increased central noradrenaline metabolism, perhaps related to sensation seeking.

Hostility modifies the association between TV viewing and cardiometabolic risk.

BACKGROUND: It was hypothesized that television viewing is predictive of cardiometabolic risk. Moreover, people with hostile personality type may be more susceptible to TV-induced negative emotions and harmful health habits which increase occurrence of cardiometabolic risk. PURPOSE: The prospective association of TV viewing on cardiometabolic risk was examined along with whether hostile personality trait was a modifier. METHODS: A total of 3,269 Black and White participants in the coronary artery risk development in young adults (CARDIA) study were assessed from age 23 to age 35. A cross-lag

New Frontiers in Selective Human MAO-B Inhibitors.

Accumulating evidence shows a relationship between the human MAO-B (hMAO-B) enzyme and neuropsychiatric/degenerative disorder, personality traits, type II alcoholism, borderline personality disorders, aggressiveness and violence in crime, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, suicide, schizophrenia, anorexia nervosa, migraine, dementia, and PD. Thus, MAO-B represents an attractive target for the treatment of a number of human diseases. The discovery, development, and therapeutic use of drugs that inhibit MAO-B are major challenges for future therapy. Various compounds and drugs that selec

The journey of medical field students: uncovering medical student syndrome, personality traits, and their interactions.

BACKGROUND: Medical students commonly experience Medical Student Syndrome (MSS), a condition where they compare their vague symptoms to the medical problems and life-threatening diseases they are learning about in medical school, even though their health profile is free. Our research aims to investigate the symptoms of MSS (anxiety-related illness) and hypochondriasis, as well as their impact on the lives of students. Additionally, we aim to study various types of personalities and, finally, investigate the demographic determinants of MSS and their interactions with various personality types a

What limitations are reported in short articles in social and personality psychology?

Every research project has limitations. The limitations that authors acknowledge in their articles offer a glimpse into some of the concerns that occupy a field's attention. We examine the types of limitations authors discuss in their published articles by categorizing them according to the four validities framework and investigate whether the field's attention to each of the four validities has shifted from 2010 to 2020. We selected one journal in social and personality psychology (Social Psychological and Personality Science; SPPS), the subfield most in the crosshairs of psychology's replica

The psychopathology of recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Despite its poor prognosis, the psychological factors associated with recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis are poorly understood. In people with type 1 diabetes, we assessed for psychopathology in those with and without recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). METHOD: The design was a case-control study. Cases were defined as people with two or more DKA episodes in a 12-month period (recurrent DKA). Cases and controls were matched for gender and age. We compared groups for scores on Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck's Depression Inventory II, Difficulty in Emotion Regulation Scale (DE

[Psychogenias of the refusal reaction type in patients with slowly progressive schizophrenia].

Psychogenias of the refusal reaction type observed in long-term stages of torpid schizophrenia in patients with marked negative changes and decreased fitness for work were subjected to clinical analysis. The results obtained suggest that such reactions are caused by the altered "background" in the form of distorted manifestations of psychic infantilism expressed here as a peculiar psychopathy-like defect of a "passively dependent personality disturbance" type. The study has made it possible to specify the psychopathologic structure of psychogenic states of the refusal reaction type which inclu

Developmental trauma, complex PTSD, and the current proposal of DSM-5.

This paper evaluates representation of clinical consequences of developmental psychological trauma in the current proposal of DSM-5. Despite intensive efforts by its proponents for two decades, it is not known yet if Complex PTSD will take a place in the final version of DSM-5. Recognition of dissociative character of several symptom dimensions and introduction of items about negative affects such as shame and guilt imply an indirect improvement toward better coverage of the consequences of developmental trauma in the existing category of PTSD. As disorders with highest prevalence of chronic t

[Neuropsychological outcome of head injury in children].

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) and Yatabe-Guilford personality test were administered to 31 children who had been hospitalized for head injury and made a GR or MD by the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS). The type of lesion, as defined by CT scan categories, was an important factor to prognosticate the outcome of intellectual function. The IQ, especially performance IQ, of acute subdural hematoma (EDH) or severe diffuse brain injury (DBI) was lower than that caused by other types of lesion. Several children demonstrated improvement in IQ level during the initial year. The
