Experimental application of virtual reality for nicotine craving through cue exposure.

Research has shown that many smokers experience an increase in the desire to smoke when exposed to smoking-related cues. Cue exposure treatment (CET) refers to the manualized, repeated exposure to smoking-related cues, aimed at the reducing cue reactivity by extinction. In this study, we constructed a virtual reality system for evoking a desire of nicotine, which was based on the results of a Questionnaire of Nicotine-craving. And we investigated the effectiveness of the virtual reality system as compared to classical device (pictures). As a result, we reached the conclusion that virtual reali

An analysis of muscular load and performance in using a pen-tablet system.

The present paper aims to investigate two characteristics; task performance and muscular load during skill process for the pen-tablet input system with the mouse input system on the PC in order to determine the comprehensive usability for the pen-tablet system. Two computer tasks were designed for the study: task SL and task PT. Task SL was a repetitive computer-drawing including typical mouse motions such as clicking and drag-dropping. Task PT was a polygon tracing task requiring fine-controlled movements with the input device. Surface electromyography (EMG) and performance data were measured

Virtual reality in the treatment of spider phobia: a controlled study.

This study explored whether virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy was effective in the treatment of spider phobia. We compared a treatment condition vs. a waiting list condition in a between group design with 23 participants. Participants in the VR treatment group received an average of four one-hour exposure therapy sessions. VR exposure was effective in treating spider phobia compared to a control condition as measured with a Fear of Spiders questionnaire, a Behavioural Avoidance Test (BAT), and severity ratings made by the clinician and an independent assessor. Eighty-three percent of patie

A factor-analytic investigation of computer 'addiction' and engagement.

Evidence supporting the application of Brown's (1991, 1993) conception of behavioural addiction to computing behaviour is presented. Questionnaire items tapping Brown's addiction criteria were factor-analysed along with others, including computer apathy-engagement and computer anxiety-comfort items of Charlton and Birkett (1995). Items relating to some of Brown's criteria (tolerance, euphoria, and cognitive salience) were found to be complex, an Addiction factor loading upon them but an Engagement factor loading more highly. Items tapping other criteria (conflict, withdrawal, behavioural salie

The VEPSY updated project: virtual reality in clinical psychology.

Many of us grew up with the naive assumption that couches are the best used therapeutic tools in psychotherapy. But tools for psychotherapy are evolving in a much more complex environment than a designer's chaise lounge. In particular, virtual reality (VR) devices have the potential for appearing soon in many consulting rooms. The use of VR in medicine is not a novelty. Applications of virtual environments for health care have been developed in the following areas: surgical procedures (remote surgery or telepresence, augmented or enhanced surgery, and planning and simulation of procedures befo

Motion sickness and proprioceptive aftereffects following virtual environment exposure.

To study the potential aftereffects of virtual environments (VE), tests of visually guided behavior and felt limb position (pointing with eyes open and closed) along with self-reports of motion sickness-like discomfort were administered before and after 30 min exposure of 34 subjects. When post- discomfort was compared to a pre-baseline, the participants reported more sickness afterward (p < 0.03). The change in felt limb position resulted in subjects pointing higher (p < 0.038) and slightly to the left, although the latter difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.08). When findings

Ataxia following exposure to a virtual environment.

BACKGROUND: Virtual environment (VE) technology has many promising applications in a variety of areas that may likely lead to widespread use as technology progresses and cost decreases. Recent research has demonstrated that simulator sickness, a well-established effect of simulator exposure, can occur with VE exposure as well. Because ataxia (postural unsteadiness) is known to occur following simulator exposure, it might also occur following VE exposure. Simulator sickness and after-effects, such as ataxia, pose severe safety risks and raise serious liability questions. METHOD: A PC-based VE

MR Optimum: A web-based open-source tool for standardized signal-to-noise ratio evaluation in MRI.

Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is a key performance metric in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate pulse sequences, receive coils, and image reconstruction algorithms. A variety of methods have been proposed to estimate SNR. However, the lack of consistent and broadly available open-source implementations has been a challenge for reliable SNR comparisons in clinical and research settings. To address this gap, this work introduces MR Optimum, a cloud-native, open-source platform for standardized SNR analysis. MR Optimum integrates established SNR estimation techniques within a flexible, mo

[Post-stroke paralysis of the upper limb and non-contact computer control].

Restoring upper limb functions in patients after a stroke remains a challenging medical and social task. The introduction of a human-computer interface based on computer vision enables combining motor training with the performance of practical tasks on a computer, laying the foundation for a new approach integrating rehabilitation into the patient's daily activities, thereby increasing adherence to treatment. The article presents two clinical cases of using the author's method of rehabilitation in male patients (47 and 73 years) with post-stroke paralysis of the upper limb. The method is based

Development of the ERATbi App, a Clinical Decision Support System for Early Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury in the ICU: Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Early rehabilitation in neurocritical care is often underutilized due to fragmented workflows, interdisciplinary coordination challenges, and the absence of structured digital decision support. Traditional clinical decision support systems (CDSS) often address single domains and lack adaptability to the dynamic, multiprofessional workflows of intensive care units (ICUs). OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate the usability of the ERATbi App (Early Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury App), a modular, tablet-based CDSS was designed to streamline early rehabilitation planning and stren

Visually Impaired People Recognize Virtual Objects Through 3D Reconstructed Shapes.

With the improvement of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction technology, virtual objects with realistic shapes have opened up the possibility for the blind or visually impaired (BVI) to improve the cognitive ability of objects by perceiving a large number of objects. In order to help BVI learn and recognize objects more conveniently, we constructed a virtual object shape recognition system (VOSRS) based on 3D reconstruction. We first proposed an improved 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) method for precise 3D reconstruction of objects. Then, we introduced a mesh extraction method for 3D Gaussian t

Virtual Compound Screening for Discovery of Dopamine D1 Receptor Biased Allosteric Modulators.

The dopamine D1 receptor (D1R) is a therapeutic target for a variety of central nervous system disorders including Parkinson's disease (PD). Challenges thus arise in the development of safer D1R therapies in limiting off-target drug activity. This issue is particularly relevant to PD therapy, where L-DOPA has been the "gold standard" drug for decades despite a problematic side-effect profile. Recent studies of G-protein and β-arrestin functionally selective signaling offer new strategies for developing superior D1R orthosteric and allosteric compounds with fewer side effects. We designed a des

Streaming to Connect: Exploring How Social Connectedness Relates to Empathy Types and Physiological States in Remote Virtual Audiences.

Examining remote virtual audiences is a vital part of understanding social experiences in modern human-computer interaction contexts. Doing so raises intriguing questions about how these mediated connections relate to emotional and physiological states. The vagus nerve is central to socioemotional processing and physiological well-being, with its activation represented as vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV). We examine how participants' social connectedness to virtual partners relates to their experience of socioemotional competences and psychophysiological states while observing s

Full-immersion virtual reality: Adverse effects related to static balance.

The use of virtual reality (VR) is associated with several adverse effects including dizziness, headache, and motion sickness. This study investigates how full-immersion VR games cause changes in static balance with associated adverse effects, and whether a fixed or a changing game background is more likely to contribute to such problems. Static balance and adverse effects (eye fatigue and dizziness) were measured in 15 healthy adults under three conditions: baseline; after a full-immersion virtual reality game (PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation® VR headset) with a fixed background (15 min); a

Laboratory Administration of Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation (taVNS): Technique, Targeting, and Considerations.

Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) may be administered via a novel, emerging neuromodulatory technique known as transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS). Unlike cervically-implanted VNS, taVNS is an inexpensive and non-surgical method used to modulate the vagus system. taVNS is appealing as it allows for rapid translation of basic VNS research and serves as a safe, inexpensive, and portable neurostimulation system for the future treatment of central and peripheral disease. The background and rationale for taVNS is described, along with electrical and parametric consider
