Impact of wireless health on proactive loss control and wellness strategies.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that despite an overall decrease in the number of workers compensation claims, indemnity, medical costs and days away from work have continued to rise. Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) account for 33 percent of these costs. OSHA Defines an MSD as: "Disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage and spinal discs. Wireless technology will play an important role in prevention and diagnosing these injuries. In fact, today's escalating medical costs and ever changing legal and regulatory environment necessitate proactive loss control an

[Appraisal of Lyme borreliosis].

Lyme borreliosis is due to infection with a tick-borne spirochete. The variety of signs and symptoms and also the laboratory tests of this multisystem illness often cause great problems in the appraisal of this disease. Frequently indispositions are associated with positive antibody tests for Borrelia burgdorferi. Terms as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome are often connected with the diagnosis of Lyme disease. Outdoor workers such as farmers, foresters, hunters, woodcutters and gamekeepers in areas of endemic disease take a great occupational risk of infection with borreliosis. In the

Indications for lumbar microdiskectomy.

A very high percentage of patients coming to surgery for large disk extrusions and sciatica do very well with minimally invasive diskectomy. In most patients given relatively early surgical treatment, the primary predictor of outcome is the size of the disk herniation and the remaining competency of the anulus fibrosus. With the passage of time and with prolonged disability before surgery, psychosocial factors become increasingly important in determining outcomes. Factors such as psychological distress, depression, involvement with workers' compensation claims and disability claims, drug and a…

Arthroscopically enhanced "miniapproach" to rotator cuff repair.

The results of rotator cuff repair through a lateral deltoid splitting approach combined with arthroscopic subacromial decompression are presented in 18 patients with an average followup of 46 months. Sixteen patients (88%) scored good or excellent on the University of California at Los Angeles shoulder rating scale. Pain scores improved from an average of 1.6 to 7.6. Function scores improved from 2.5 to 8.4. Two patients had poor results; both had workers' compensation cases pending. One patient with a poor result had 2 complications: superficial infection and failure of repair that required …

Valley Fever Is an Occupational Illness: Let's Get the Data to Prevent It.

Valley fever is a fungal disease acquired through inhalation of spores of the fungus Coccidioides. Spores become airborne when soil is disturbed, making outdoor workers, such as agricultural or construction workers, at higher risk of exposure and disease. Valley fever is endemic and increasing in the American Southwest, with numerous documented outbreaks among construction crews, archeologists, prison employees, wildland firefighters, and military personnel. Valley fever is recognized as a work-related disease in California, but not Arizona or other states with endemic disease. Epidemiologists

The epidemiological information system of the French national electricity and gas company: the SI-EPI project.

SI-EPI is epidemiological information system set up in 1978 in the national electricity and gas company, Electricité de France-Gaz de France (EDF-GDF). The worker population comprises about 150,000 individuals, involved in production, transmission and distribution of energy. SI-EPI was developed by the epidemiologists of the Occupational Health Department (180 physicians), and of the Sécurité Sociale Department (120 physicians). Several data bases constitute SI-EPI. The population data base contains demographic, socioeconomic and professional data about each worker. The health data base is an

Occupational Rhinitis: Classification, Diagnosis, and Therapeutics.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Occupational rhinitis (OR), an inflammatory disease of the nose, refers to any nasal symptoms reported to be work-related. The purpose of this review is to provide a current overview of the classification, diagnosis, and treatment of OR. RECENT FINDINGS: Occupational rhinitis (OR) can further be classified into allergic or non-allergic depending on the causative agent(s) and pathogenesis. Presenting symptoms are similar to non-OR including nasal congestion, anterior and posterior rhinorrhea, sneezing, and nasal itching. Despite its high prevalence in a spectrum of workplace

Factors associated with early opioid prescription among workers with low back injuries.

UNLABELLED: Prescription of opioids for nonmalignant musculoskeletal pain has increased substantially in recent years, but there is little information on the incidence of, or factors associated with, such prescription for work-related back pain. In a prospective cohort study (N = 1,067), we examined associations between worker sociodemographic and other characteristics and opioid prescription within six weeks of the first medical visit for workers' compensation claims for work loss due to back injury. We examined administrative, pharmacy, and worker-reported data. In bivariate logistic regress…

Olfactory dysfunction in head injured workers.

Olfactory dysfunction following trauma has been widely reported and is currently compensable according to existing American Medical Association guidelines when it occurs in the occupational setting. Its presence and the risk factors for its development, however, have not been clearly delineated in occupationally head injured workers. In order to assess this phenomenon, a series of 365 consecutive head injured workers from 1993-1997 was assessed in order to determine the incidence of post-traumatic olfactory dysfunction and its association with the severity of the head injury, the mechanism of

Byssinosis in a Bombay textile mill.

BACKGROUND: Till a national campaign against dust-related lung diseases was launched by a voluntary agency in Ahmedabad in 1992, government records for the 150-year-old textile industry showed no cases of byssinosis--the disabling occupational disease caused by cotton dust. The worldwide incidence of byssinosis among workers in the dusty sections of textile mills is nearly 40%. We assessed the prevalence of byssinosis in a Bombay mill so that the Employees State Insurance Scheme would start conducting medical checks in all the 55 textile mills in Bombay and officially recognize the disease. But other than mesothelioma? An estimate of the proportion of work-related cancers in Quebec.

BACKGROUND: More than 30 exposures in the workplace are proven carcinogens. In the present study, we aimed to estimate the burden of occupational cancer in Quebec so as to increase awareness among stakeholders and to prioritize research activities. METHODS: Work-attributable fractions-that is, the proportions of cancers attributable to work-as published in Finland and the United Kingdom were applied to Quebec 2002-2006 cancer incidence and mortality data to estimate the number of work-related cases for 28 cancer sites. RESULTS: Overall, 6.0% of incident cancers (men: 9.1%; women: 2.7%) and 7

Effects on the regional cerebral blood flow of long-term exposure to organic solvents.

Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF, 133Xe inhalation method) was measured in 50 male paint-factory workers with a mean of 18 years of exposure to a mixture of organic solvents. A group of 50 workers in a sugar-refinery, matched for age and education, served as controls. The measurements were made during resting and during activation by mental tasks (4%; P less than 0.05) in the exposed group. Largest differences were seen in frontotemporal areas. The difference between the exposed group and and controls increased at higher dose levels. The largest rCBF-increases during mental activation were s

A systematic review of the profile and density of the maternal and child health workforce in China.

BACKGROUND: To track progress in maternal and child health (MCH), understanding the health workforce is important. This study seeks to systematically review evidence on the profile and density of MCH workers in China. METHODS: We searched 6 English and 2 Chinese databases for studies published between 1 October 1949 and 20 July 2020. We included studies that reported on the level of education or the certification status of all the MCH workers in one or more health facilities and studies reporting the density of MCH workers per 100 000 population or per 1000 births. MCH workers were defined as

Special Communication: The Global Phenomenon of Sex Work, Intimate Partner Violence, and Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND/STUDY MOTIVATION: Sex work, an occupation or trade involving exchange of sexual services for economic compensation, is a highly gendered profession, with 60% to 80% of sex workers identifying as women. The rate of traumatic brain injury (TBI) among persons who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in the sex worker population is significantly high. According to global estimates, 80% of female sex workers have experienced IPV, with an estimated 95% reporting TBIs, sustained either by being hit in the head with objects and/or having their heads slammed into objects while on the j

Periodic presumptive treatment of curable sexually transmitted infections among sex workers: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Unprotected sex work remains a major driver of HIV/sexually transmitted infection (STI) epidemics in many countries. STI treatment can lower disease burden, complications and prevalence of HIV cofactors. Periodic presumptive treatment (PPT) has been used with sex workers to reduce their high burden of largely asymptomatic STIs. The objective of this review is to assess benefits and harms of PPT among female sex workers. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE for studies related to sex work and STIs during 1990-2010, extracted data from eligible studies in duplicate and conducted meta-analys

[Noise pollution in the working environment].

NOISE POLLUTION IN THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT. Hearing damage due to exposure to noise in the workplace has been recognised as a professional disease since 1963. It first manifests itself as auditory fatigue, which can be assessed by Echoscan and which requires preventive measures, before bilateral hearing loss sets in, usually symmetrical, initially producing a very characteristic auditory scotoma centred on the 4000 Hz frequency. This irreversible hearing loss may be accompanied by tinnitus, more rarely by hyperacusis, as well as other extra-auditory manifestations: stress, high blood pressure

Nutritional benefit of fungal spores for honey bee workers.

The collection of fungal spores by honey bees, Apis mellifera, can be classified as active or passive, the latter when spores are associated with pollen, nectar or honey dew. While low quality and shortage of pollen have been raised as hypotheses for fungal spore collection, the nutritional value of fungal spores for honey bees is poorly understood. Here we investigated the effect of consumption of fungal spores on survival, ovarian activation and the development of the hypopharyngeal glands (HPGs) in honey bee workers. Two pollen diets (Eucalyptus sp. pollen and a multifloral pollen) suppleme

Risk of Raynaud's Phenomenon Among Workers in the Occupational Disease Surveillance System.

INTRODUCTION: Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is linked to occupational exposures such as vibration, cold temperature, and chemicals. However, large cohort studies examining RP by occupation and sex are scarce. To address this gap, this study aimed to assess risk of RP by both occupation and sex in a large cohort of workers in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: Workers with accepted lost-time compensation claims were linked to physician billing records to identify diagnoses of RP between 2002 and 2020. A 3-year washout (disease-free) period was applied, and follow-up was limited to 5 years. Cox proportional
