Patients with moderate to severe hirsutism presenting over an 18-month period to an endocrine clinic were assessed by clinical evaluation and hormone measurements. Hair growth rate was estimated by a photographic technique and the severity of hirsutism graded using an objective scale. Of 43 patients, 9 had polycystic ovaries and the remainder were considered to have idiopathic hirsutism. The most severely affected group had significantly increased hair growth rates compared with less clinically affected subjects, and 47% of this group showed objective features of virilization. However, apart f

The paper presents the data on marked dysfunction of hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal system in patients with esophageal and gastric cancer. Patients revealed lowered levels of 11-hydroxycorticosteroids in blood plasma and 17-corticosteroids and 17-glucocorticosteroids in diurnal urine. It was matched by an elevated threshold of hypothalamic sensitivity to inhibition by glucocorticosteroids. Treatment for these disturbances which brought the function of this system to normal had a beneficial effect on the secretion and excretion of corticosteroids in the course of combined therapy and surgery and

Circadian changes in the corticosteroid, testosterone, and ACTH content in the blood plasma were examined to monitor the suppressant effect of glucocorticoids on adrenocortical and hypophyseal functions during administering glucocorticoid drugs to patients with congenital adrenocortical dysfunction. The daily dose of glucocorticoids was given in two intakes according to the two schemes: scheme 1 included the drug intake in the morning and in the afternoon, scheme 2 in the morning and in the evening. The effect of glucocorticoid therapy on the pattern of the circadian rhythm and the absolute co

Twelve women with congenital adrenal hyperplasia are reported. Initial diagnoses were made at ages ranging from 12 to 32, with epiphyseal fusion complete in all patients. During 6 to 10 years of corticosteroid therapy there occurred substantial reduction of hypertrichosis, disappearance of temporal recession, and decrease in eroticism. In 11 patients menstrual bleeding occurred within 4 months. Urinary excretion of total gonadotropins remained unchanged; total estrogens decreased slightly. By the end of followup, 7 patients with a mean age of 17 years had regular menses, 6 were ovulating, and
