The medial-olivocochlear (MOC) acoustic reflex is thought to provide frequency-specific feedback that adjusts the gain of cochlear amplification, but little is known about how frequency specific the reflex actually is. We measured human MOC tuning through changes in stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs) from 40-dB-SPL tones at probe frequencies (f(p)s) near 0.5, 1.0, and 4.0 kHz. MOC activity was elicited by 60-dB-SPL ipsilateral, contralateral, or bilateral tones or half-octave noise bands, with elicitor frequency (f(e)) varied in half-octave steps. Tone and noise elicitors produc

There is indication that middle ear pathologies can affect otoacoustic emissions (OAE) to varying degrees. In fact, since acoustic emissions are recorded in the outer ear duct, the energy transfer mechanisms both up and downstream of the middle ear must be intact. OAE distortion products (DP) enable one to analyze cochlear response by frequency and to verify the retrograde response as a function of frequency. In the present work this method was used to test otosclerosis patients. A group of 45 patients with otosclerosis was tested to determine whether the OAE-DP could be identified and measure

Evoked potential threshold estimation can be made truly objective by using statistically based methods. In general, time domain analysis is preferable for responses which are impulsive (temporally narrow, spectrally broad), whereas frequency-domain analysis is more appropriate for tonal responses (spectrally narrow, temporally broad). In both time and frequency domains, methods comparing evoked potential power to noise models are robust and powerful. For spectrally narrow responses such as steady-state evoked potentials, the performance of magnitude-squared coherence, the ratio of grand averag

An important issue in understanding the development of noise-induced hearing loss is whether prior acoustic overstimulation alters the susceptibility of the cochlea to further damage. The present work was designed to establish a model of activity-dependent changes in the susceptibility of the cochlea to acoustic overstimulation by regularly exposing the ear to a low-frequency pure tone. As a quantitative index of cochlear function, 2f1-f2 distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were monitored systematically over time in three groups of rabbits, with each group experiencing a unique p

The purpose of this investigation was to study the relationship between visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) performance and age (i.e., corrected and mental) with 60 premature infants. VRA performance was classified as unacceptable, marginal, or acceptable based on conditionability and number of responses obtained before habituation to the task. The results indicated that mental age and corrected age were significantly related to VRA performance. It was found that a corrected age of 8 mo and/or a mental age of 6 mo is typically required for acceptable performance using VRA. A lack of responsi

Auditory postauricular response (PAR) was determined in 52 subjects with normal hearing and 83 patients with unilateral peripheral facial nerve palsy. PAR was induced bilaterally by bilateral aural stimulation in 50 (96%) of the 52 subjects. Determination of PAR in the 83 patients disclosed that the prognosis was significantly (p less than 0.01) better for those in whom PAR occurred within 4 weeks of onset, in comparison with those without PAR. PAR determination was thus considered to be a useful procedure for determining the prognosis of peripheral facial nerve palsy.

Tympanometry with low-frequency probe tones provides useful clinical information for patients with disorders of the tympanum, the tympanic membrane, and the Eustachian tube. Low-frequency, single component tympanometry, however, is relatively insensitive to many lesions that affect the ossicular chain. This review focuses upon a collection of four, interrelated acoustic measurement techniques that have been developed for identification and differential diagnosis of those middle ear disorders that do not always yield pathognomonic patterns with conventional tympanometry. Specifically, the initi

The acoustic reflex thresholds for broadband noise and 500-, 1000-, and 2000-Hz activating signals were measured in a group of young normal hearing adults and a group of elderly normal hearing subjects. The results indicated that the acoustic reflex thresholds for tonal activating signals in the young subjects were similar to those in the elderly subjects. However, the acoustic stapedius reflex thresholds for broadband noise activating signals is significantly higher in the elderly subjects than in the young. These differences were explained in light of Bredburg's findings [Acta Otolaryngol. S

On subjects with unilateral vestibular dysfunction, the application of a vibratory stimulation (100 Hz) to the two mastoids and the vertex, and to the right and left dorsal neck muscles produces a nystagmus directed towards the good ear in 85% of patients. Fixation must be suppressed by Frenzel's glasses or video nystagmoscopy. To be significant this nystagmus must appear in at least 3 of the 5 vibratory stimulated sites. On healthy subjects nystagmus is present in 6% of cases but never in those below 30 years. In subjects affected by central vertigo, nystagmus was elicited in 10% of cases and

Auditory scene analysis is the process used to separate and integrate acoustic information into representations of auditory objects. Spatial cues play a critical role in this process, but questions remain regarding how these cues influence auditory stream segregation. The ABA stream segregation paradigm capitalizes on a bistable stimulus capable of eliciting perception of a single (integrated) auditory stream, or two separate (segregated) auditory streams with equal probability. Here, perceptual bistability was used to assess the effectiveness of interaural level (ILD), time (ITD), and correla

Iron-deficiency anemia is common worldwide and typically treated by oral iron supplementation. Excess enteral iron, however, may cause pathological outcomes. Developing new repletion approaches is thus warranted. Previous experimentation revealed that select amino acids (AAs) induce trafficking of transporters onto the enterocyte brush-border membrane (BBM) and enhance electrolyte absorption/secretion. Here, we hypothesized that certain AAs would increase the abundance of the main intestinal iron importer, divalent metal-ion transporter 1 (DMT1), on the BBM of duodenal enterocytes, thus stimul

Patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) often experience disorders of consciousness (DoC) and motor impairments, which pose challenges to the implementation of conventional intervention approaches. As one of the relatively preserved sensory pathways in these patients, the auditory system holds considerable potential for assessing consciousness and facilitating its recovery. Therefore, this review systematically examines the mechanisms of verbal and nonverbal stimuli in consciousness recovery, focusing on analyzing the synergistic effects and limitations of language stimuli in emotion

Auditory guides can influence the tempo of rhythmic movements, potentially enhancing running performance by improving parameters. Many previous studies have focused on low-speed running, but there is a lack of research on high-speed sprint running. This study investigated whether a metronome-based rhythmic auditory guide could modulate sprint running motions. Twenty-two junior high school students participated in the study, performing three 40-meter sprint trials under different conditions: (1) without an auditory guide (baseline), (2) with a slow-rhythm auditory guide (3.40 ± 0.24 Hz), and (

PURPOSE: Tone-pip-evoked otoacoustic emissions (PEOAEs) are transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) that are hypothesized to originate from reflection of energy near the best-frequency (BF) cochlear place of the stimulus frequency. However, individual PEOAEs have energy with a wide range of delays. We sought to determine whether some PEOAE energy is consistent with having been generated far from BF.
METHODS: PEOAEs from 35 and 47 dB SPL tone pips were obtained by removing pip-stimulus energy by subtracting the ear-canal sound pressure from scaled-down 59 dB SPL tone pips (which evoke re

Measuring the electrically evoked stapedius reflex during the fitting of cochlear implants (CIs) provides a reliable estimation of maximum comfort levels, resulting in the programming of the CI with high hearing comfort and good speech understanding. Detection of the stapedius reflex and the required stimulation level on each implant channel is already being performed during surgery, whereby intraoperative stapedius reflexes are observed through the surgical microscope. Intraoperative stapedius reflex detection is both an indicator that the auditory nerve is responding to electrical stimulatio

In conventional bone-conduction (BC) devices, a vibrator is typically attached to the mastoid process of the temporal bone or the condyle process of the mandible. However, BC-sound presentations to facial parts such as the nose and cheek have also been investigated recently. As the face is the among the most complex structures of the human body, transmission of sounds using BC on different facial parts are likely to show different perception and propagation characteristics than those presented to conventional parts. However, the characteristics of BC sound presented to different part of the fa

The processing of multisensory information is based upon the capacity of brain regions, such as the superior temporal cortex, to combine information across modalities. However, it is still unclear whether the representation of coherent auditory and visual events requires any prior audiovisual experience to develop and function. Here we measured brain synchronization during the presentation of an audiovisual, audio-only or video-only version of the same narrative in distinct groups of sensory-deprived (congenitally blind and deaf) and typically developed individuals. Objective. Many recent studies investigating the processing of continuous natural speech have employed electroencephalography (EEG) due to its high temporal resolution. However, most of these studies explored the response mechanism limited to the electrode space. In this study, we intend to explore the underlying neural processing in the source space, particularly the dynamic functional interactions among different regions during neural entrainment to speech.Approach.We collected 128-channel EEG data while 22 participants listened to story speech and time-reversed speech using a naturalistic pa

A principal cue for sound source localization is the difference in arrival times of sounds at an animal's two ears (interaural time difference, ITD). Neurons that process ITDs are specialized to compare the timing of inputs with submillisecond precision. In the barn owl, ITD processing begins in the nucleus laminaris (NL) region of the auditory brain stem. Remarkably, NL neurons are sensitive to ITDs in high-frequency sounds (kilohertz-range). This contrasts with ITD-based sound localization in analogous regions in mammals where ITD sensitivity is typically restricted to lower-frequency sounds

Intensity-dependent amplitude changes (IDAP) have been extensively studied using event-related potentials (ERPs) and have been linked to several psychiatric disorders. This study aims to explore the application of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in IDAP paradigms, which related to ERPs could indicate the existence of neurovascular coupling. Thirty-three and thirty-one subjects participated in two experiments, respectively. The first experiment consisted of the presentation of three-tone intensities (77.9 dB, 84.5 dB, and 89.5 dB) lasting 500 ms, each type randomly presented 54 ti
