[Horizontal glottectomy--oncological and functional results. Part II. Morphology of the glottis and perceptive-acoustics characteristic of the voice and speech after horizontal glottectomy].

INTRODUCTION: The authors showed findings concerning glottis morphology and perceptual-acoustic characteristics of voice and speech after partial classical (PCGLg) and extended glottic partial laryngectomy (PEGLg). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 10 patients (9 M., 1 F. average age 56 (min. 47 max. 65) were examined. All patients were undergone glottic partial laryngectomy: a) classical (n = 5) b) extended of vocal process (n = 3) with (n = 2) or without (n = 1) the removal of the mucous false folds, c) extended of part of arytenoid cartilage with (n = 2) or without (n = 1) the removal of the mucous of

Reliability of the Acoustic Voice Quality Index AVQI and the Acoustic Breathiness Index (ABI) when wearing CoViD-19 protective masks.

PURPOSE: Investigating whether the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and the Acoustic Breathiness Index (ABI) are valid and comparable to previous unmasked measurements if the speaker wears a surgical mask or a FFP-2 mask to reduce the risk of transmitting air-borne viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. METHODS: A convenience sample of 31 subjectively healthy participants was subjected to AVQI and ABI voice examination four times: Twice wearing no mask, once with a surgical mask and once with a FFP-2 mask as used regularly in our hospital. The order of the four mask conditions was randomized. The dif

Impact of acoustic airflow on intrasinus drug deposition: New insights into the vibrating mode and the optimal acoustic frequency to enhance the delivery of nebulized antibiotic.

AIM: We investigated the impact of vibrating acoustic airflow, the high frequency (f≥100 Hz) and the low frequency (f≤45 Hz) sound waves, on the enhancement of intrasinus drug deposition. METHODS: (81m)Kr-gas ventilation study was performed in a plastinated human cast with and without the addition of vibrating acoustic airflow. Similarly, intrasinus drug deposition in a nasal replica using gentamicin as a marker was studied with and without the superposition of different modes of acoustic airflow. RESULTS: Ventilation experiments demonstrate that no sinus ventilation was observed without aco

Acoustic tumors: operation versus radiation--making sense of opposing viewpoints. Part II. Acoustic neuromas: sorting out management options.

Patients with acoustic neuromas have several options available to them. Large tumors with significant brain stem compression usually require surgical resection. For patients with small or medium-sized tumors, radiosurgery has become a common treatment, with excellent long-term results being reported. Patients must be comfortable with the concept of tumor control rather than tumor removal. Most seem to be satisfied with this concept if it allows them to avoid brain surgery. Surgeons should strive to educate their patients with information from the peer-reviewed literature. Confusion exists amon

Physics-informed learning for end-to-end acoustic scattering of wavelength-order axisymmetric objects: From geometric profiles to acoustic radiation forces.

Theoretical computations of scattering fields and radiation forces for axisymmetric objects typically rely on coordinate mapping techniques to parameterize geometric features and coordinate transformations to enforce boundary conditions within a closed-form governing framework. However, these approaches often suffer from computational inefficiency. Here, we propose a two-stage physics-informed neural network framework that decomposes the cross-scale mapping task into two specialized sub-networks. The first stage, the physics-informed geometric mapping network, integrates conformal transformati

[Direct acoustic cochlear stimulation for therapy of severe to profound mixed hearing loss: Codacs™ Direct Acoustic Cochlear Implant System].

OBJECTIVE: Implantable hearing aids have become a valid option for the therapy of various forms of hearing loss. The Codacs™ Direct Acoustic Cochlear Implant System is the first vibratory implant available for patients with severe to profound mixed hearing loss (MHL). By directly coupling sound energy into the perilymph, a very high maximum power output (MPO) is achieved over a broad frequency range. Via a conventional stapedotomy, the vibratory energy of the electromagnetic actuator is transferred directly to the perilymph through the oval window. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This article describes

Reconfigurable acoustic tweezers based on a programmable droplet array.

Conventional acoustic manipulation relies on either direct acoustic radiation force acting on particles or indirect methods using acoustic streaming generated by acoustic pressure fields to manipulate particles. While acoustic devices generating standing waves can create patterned arrangements of particles and cells, these methods are typically limited to producing regular arrays in static configurations. This study introduces a dynamic acoustic field modulation method to overcome these limitations, significantly enhancing manipulation flexibility. Crucially, the propagation of acoustic energy
