Fifteen members from a new family in which hereditary angioneurotic oedema exists have been studied with respect to serum concentrations of some components of the complement system. C'1q levels were found to be normal in all family members studied. C'1 haemolytic activity, previously reported to be decreased during attacks of oedema in some patients with this disease, was always within normal limits in our patients. Caprine brucellosis due to Brucella melitensis is an important zoonotic disease. Lepto Dri Dot is a new card agglutination test developed by the Dutch Royal Tropical Institute for the rapid diagnosis of leptospirosis. We evaluated the test in field conditions in The Andaman Islands. Patients suspected of leptospirosis who attended three primary health centres were included in the study. The test results were compared with blood culture or microscopic agglutination tests on paired serum samples; 74 of 124 patients were diagnosed as having leptospirosis based on these criteria. PURPOSE: To present a case of brucellosis-related unilateral dacryoadenitis.
METHODS: A 16-year-old boy had unilateral lacrimal gland enlargement, shown by magnetic resonance imaging of the orbits. Clinical findings, tube agglutination, the culture of a lacrimal gland aspirate, and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of brucellosis.
RESULTS: Tube agglutination testing for brucellosis gave a titer of over 1/640. The aspirate from the lacrimal glands grew Brucella melitensis and histopathological findings were consistent with brucellosis.

We have isolated two phenotypically distinct nonfastidious Francisella strains (Fx1 and Fx2) from the blood of compromised patients with pneumonia and compared them with eight other Francisella strains, including Francisella tularensis biovar tularensis, F. tularensis biovar novicida, and F. philomiragia. The authors report a case of cryptococcal meningoencephalitis in a 22-year-old male with Hodgkin's disease at third stage B. Cryptococcus neoformans was isolated from cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) and blood specimens. Latex antigen agglutination tests and India ink preparations also were positive for this pathogenic yeast. Leptospirosis occurring in a husband and wife is described. Both were responsible for cleaning up the excreta of a recently acquired puppy. The wife developed leptospirosis canicola, and three months later the husband developed leptospirosis icterohaemorrhagica. Difficulty was experienced in ascertaining the infecting species of leptospire in the husband owing to the agglutination tests giving an equal rise and fall in titres for both L. icterohaemorrhagiae and L. canicola. More hydatidosis cases were detected in an immunodiagnostic survey of rural schoolchildren from an endemic area in Argentina by the arc 5 double diffusion (DD5) test than by indirect hemagglutination (IHA) and latex agglutination (LA) tests. Evidence of infection was obtained by clinical, radiologic, echographic, and/or computerized axial tomography examinations in only one of three DD5-negative individuals, and in 2 of 4 students showing a questionable reaction of identity with arc 5 in DD5, who were positive in LA and/or IHA.
