Forty-eight patients with panic disorder/agoraphobia (PAD) and 30 with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were assessed for DSM-III-R axis II personality disorders (PD) and the presence of the same anxiety disorder in the relatives of probands (homotypic disorders). No specific personality disorder was present significantly more often in either of the two groups. Agoraphobia was not associated with higher rates of axis II disorders in PAD patients. Duration of illness did not influence the presence of a PD in patients of both groups. Secondary cases of the same anxiety disorder were significa…

BACKGROUND: The long-term prognosis after cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in outpatient groups for panic disorder and agoraphobia is not well known. The purpose of this study was to assess long-term outcomes in terms of psychological health, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), quality of life (QoL) and treatment satisfaction after CBT for panic disorder and agoraphobia.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 68 patients (61% response rate), who were assessed at pretreatment; at the start and end of treatment; and after 3 months, after 1 year, and over the long term (M = 24 years; SD = 5.3; r…

OBJECTIVE: Population-based studies of prevalence have been used to approximate the amount of need for treatment of mental disorders. This study aimed to estimate need for treatment of alcohol dependence, major depression, panic disorder, agoraphobia, and social phobia.
METHODS: Psychiatrists used the Schedule for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) to assess individuals in a probability sample of the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment Area follow-up study for need for and use of mental health services. Population-based estimates were calculated with probability weights.
RESULTS: Th…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess whether joint hypermobility syndrome is more frequent in patients with panic disorder, agoraphobia, or both than in control subjects and, if so, to determine whether mitral valve prolapse modifies or accounts in part for the association.
METHOD: A case-control study was conducted in a general teaching hospital outpatient clinic. Subjects were 99 patients, newly diagnosed and untreated, with panic disorder, agoraphobia, or both and two groups of age- and sex-matched control subjects: 99 psychiatric patients and 64 medical patients who had neve…

OBJECTIVES: The paper describes a treatment trial where exposure was compared with cognitive-behaviour therapy in the treatment of 39 female participants with a diagnosis of agoraphobia (DSM-111-R). The primary objective of the study was to see if cognitive therapy enhanced the effectiveness of exposure in the treatment of agoraphobia.
DESIGN: Participants were randomly assigned to either exposure or cognitive-behaviour therapy. The two treatment groups were balanced for severity and duration of agoraphobia, presence of panic disorder, and age.
METHODS: The exposure and the cognitive-behavio…

As individuals with HIV infection are living longer, the management of psychiatric disorders has increasingly been incorporated into compreh … ssion. Prevalent psychiatric diagnoses included major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety, and agoraphobia. Alcohol and cocaine/crack abuse and dependence were common substance use disorders. Current receipt of HIV therapy was less common among those diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. Agoraphobia was the only disorder associated with unsuppress …

This paper provides information on the relation between victimization status, crime factors, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and several other psychological disorders among a community sample of women. Results indicated that victims of crime were more likely than nonvictims to suffer from PTSD, major depressive episode, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, and simple phobia. Furthermore, life threat was associated with increased risk of major depression, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and social phobia. Completed rape was strongly related to almost ever…

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and serotonin receptor 2A (5HTR2A) polymorphisms have been investigated for their possible role in panic … patients with PD and 130 controls. The severity of the symptoms of PD was assessed by the Panic and Agoraphobia Scale (PAS). Polymorphisms of the 5HTR2A and COMT genes were identified using polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. A significant relationship was found between the COMT Val158Met polymorphism and PD. No si …

Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is the fear of anxiety-related sensations, which arises from beliefs that these sensations have harmful somatic, ps … c attacks. AS is factorially distinct from other fundamental fears, and is more strongly related to agoraphobia than other common fears. AS can be regarded as a subfactor of trait anxiety, and is more strongly related to agoraphobia than other common fears. This is a fascinating history of an untreated and undiagnosed patient with agoraphobia. The limitations to her lifestyle have been extreme. Improvement has been impressive and Mrs B is now enjoying her life considerably. The cognitive behavioural strategies have been useful and her improvement maintained at follow up. Asking elderly patients routine questions to elicit evidence of anxiety, phobias, and panic attacks will enable the physician to detect similar cases.

The symptom "vertigo" we find as a sign of many different diseases. A psychogenic cause must be considered, if organic failures are excluded by a complete examination. Such troubles we see as symptoms of endogenous psychosis and anxiety neurosis, especially aerophobia like agoraphobia, gephyrophia, and batophobia. In these cases dizziness appears as a covered form of anxiety.

This case study describes a female patient in her late 70s who developed autoimmune cholangitis a year after finishing 35 cycles of pembrolizumab for the treatment of her non-small cell lung cancer. The diagnosis was initially missed and delayed; the patient's agoraphobia and the COVID-19 pandemic were noted as contributing factors.
