Noninvasive assessment of vocal fold mucosal wave velocity using color doppler imaging.

The vibratory movement of the vocal folds (VF) plays an important role in normal function of phonation. We developed a noninvasive technique to quantify the human mucosal wave velocity (MWV) in vivo using color Doppler imaging (CDI). During phonation, the motion of mucosa-air interface generates a unique pattern of US color artefacts that assist the identification of true VF location. An in vitro study using a vibrating string phantom was conducted to investigate how the CDI displayed a vibrating soft tissue at high frequency. The vibrating amplitude, frequency, mass density and the acoustic i

Functional anatomy and physiology of the upper esophageal sphincter.

Upper esophageal sphincter (UES) refers to the high-pressure zone located in between the pharynx and the cervical esophagus. The physiological role of this sphincter is to protect against reflux of food into the airways as well as prevent entry of air into the digestive tract. UES is a musculocartilaginous structure with its anterior wall being formed by the full extent of the posterior surface of the cricoid cartilage and arytenoid and interarytenoid muscles in the upper part. Posteriorly and laterally the cricopharyngeus (CP) muscle is a definitive component of the UES. CP has many unique ch

[A case of Swyer-James syndrome diagnosed at age 70].

A male case of Swyer-James syndrome, who had been followed for bronchiectasis for a long time, detected at age 70 and diagnosed by radiological studies was reported. The movement of his left diaphragm was impaired. Arterial oxygen tension was 68 torr while breathing room air. Pulmonary function tests showed mixed ventilatory impairment, increase of residual volume, and uneven gas distribution, but diffusing capacity was normal with the single breath method. Chest radiograph revealed hyperlucency of the left lung and the right middle lung field. In these areas, pulmonary angiography showed mark

Intraoperative monitoring of regional wall motion abnormalities for detecting myocardial ischemia by transesophageal echocardiography.

Transesophageal two-dimensional echocardiography has been used for intraoperative monitoring of regional wall motion of the left ventricle. Regional wall motion abnormality is a sensitive indicator of myocardial ischemia and the use of two-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography may have a substantial advantage for early detection of myocardial infarction and thus for initiating timely and appropriate therapy in preventing postoperative myocardial ischemia. With an expected increase in the use of intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography for monitoring regional wall motion, we descr

Role of the diaphragm in the genesis of lower esophageal sphincter pressure in the cat.

To determine the role of the diaphragm in the genesis of the high-pressure zone at the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) we studied the effect of diaphragmatic contraction on lower esophageal sphincter pressure in 10 anesthetized adult cats. Despite anchoring the pressure recording assembly within the LES to prevent axial movement of the sphincter during respiration relative to the pressure recording ports, there was an average oscillation in LES pressure of 17.4 +/- 5.5 mmHg, the frequency of which was the same as the respiratory rate. Peak LES pressure occurred at end-inspiration correspondin

Dependence of high altitude sleep apnea on ventilatory sensitivity to hypoxia.

Respiration in man exposed to 5400 m was studied during sleep over a period of 6-8 h at night. Subjects were adult males, and belonged to distinct groups: one was Sherpa high altitude residents of the Himalayas and the other consisted of causasian sojourners from near sea level. All the volunteers had spent at least 32 days at or above 5400 m before the study. The subjects were instrumented for the measurements of breath-by-breath ventilation, SaO2%, eye-movement and heart rate. Nasal prongs were secured for the administration of mixtures of O2, N2 or CO2. Also, ventilatory sensitivity to hypo

Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging of the liver: initial experience.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) scans of the liver were obtained in 12 normal volunteers and 32 patients using a whole-body machine developed by Thorn-EMI Ltd., and the results were compared with x-ray computed tomography (CT). Two types of NMR scan, saturation-recovery and inversion-recovery, were performed in order to obtain values for the spin-lattice relaxation time, T1. Although the saturation-recovery scans show little soft-tissue detail, the inversion-recovery scans demonstrated the interlobar fissure, hepatic veins, portal veins, bile ducts, and gallbladder. In comparison with CT (Sie

Influence of Bubble-Containing Thickened Liquid on Swallowing Dynamics.

Thickened liquid (TL) is commonly used to aid swallowing and prevent aspiration in dysphagia patients. We hypothesized that incorporating air bubbles into TL (TLB) could reduce viscosity and pharyngeal residue, improving swallowing dynamics. This study included 24 adults (17 males, 7 females; mean age: 75.8 ± 11.4 years) with Dysphagia Severity Scale scores of 3 or 4, excluding those with laryngeal penetration or aspiration when swallowing 4 mL of TL. Test samples consisted of TL with 3% wt/vol thickening agent and TLB. Type E viscosity and texture profile analysis were conducted. The subjects

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation and Scheduling in 6G-Enabled UAV-Assisted IoT Wireless Networks.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a flexible, cost-effective solution for connecting Internet of Things (IoT) devices where traditional infrastructure falls short. However, managing their limited energy alongside the diverse demands of densely deployed devices makes resource allocation a genuinely hard problem. This paper presents a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) framework that jointly optimizes user scheduling, IoT device transmit power, bandwidth, and UAV movement in a 6G-enabled UAV-relay uplink network, using a deterministic large-scale air-to-ground path-loss channel mode

Serial In Vitro Investigation of the Fracture Properties of Mechanical Heart Valves.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical valve prostheses may develop serious dysfunctions, leading to end-stage heart failure. In some cases, a high-risk redo operation is not an option. The first cases of interventional fracturing of mechanical valves have already been successfully performed, but systematic data on mechanical prostheses' fracture properties are lacking. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the properties of mechanical heart valves crucial for interventional cardiologists: the pressure required to fracture valve leaflets; structural weak points of the prostheses; the behavior, velo

Joint Access Authentication and Task Collaboration for Dynamic Cross-Domain Resource Management in Satellite Networks.

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite systems provide wide-area Earth coverage and constitute an important component of the integrated space-air-ground network. With the increasing demand for near-data real-time task processing at the near-data end, constructing a reliable resource management solution is crucial to guaranteeing efficient task execution. Considering the frequent networking due to high-speed movement, unbalanced dynamic task allocation, and unknown resource requirements, we propose a hierarchical dynamic cross-domain collaborative resource management architecture considering satellite

Disrupted Calcium Dynamics in Reactive Astrocytes Occur with Endfeet-Arteriole Decoupling in an Amyloid Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease.

While cerebrovascular dysfunction and reactive astrocytosis are extensively characterized hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias, the dynamic relationship between reactive astrocytes and cerebral vessels remains poorly understood. Here, we used jGCaMP8f and two photon microscopy to investigate Ca2+ signaling in multiple astrocyte subcompartments, concurrent with changes in cerebral arteriole activity, in fully awake eight-month-old male and female 5xFAD mice, a model for AD-like pathology, and wild-type (WT) littermates. Exploring Regioisomeric Indole-Furanone Tubulin Inhibitors.

Tubulin is involved in microtubule function and affects mitosis, cell shape, migration, and the movement of organelles. Consequently, tubulin inhibitors have emerged as promising targets for cancer treatment. We previously identified a novel antitubulin motif that combines a furanone, indole, and electron-rich dimethoxyphenyl ring. The lead indole-furanone compound (3) demonstrated submicromolar potency on cancer cells and inhibited tubulin polymerization. To advance these findings, we synthesized a small library of analogs of 3, analyzed their biological activities, and used molecular modelin

Case series: Suture lateralization for neonatal vocal fold movement disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal stridor can be caused by bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP). Paradoxical vocal fold movement (PVFM), though rare, can precede BVFP. Both conditions may lead to airway obstruction requiring intervention. Suture lateralization is a minimally invasive, reversible alternative to tracheostomy. We present a case series of six infants with stridor who underwent suture lateralization. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted at a tertiary children's hospital from 2022 to 2024. Infants with BVFP or PVFM who underwent combined endoscopic and open suture lateralization wer

Non-Traumatic Thyroid Cartilage Fracture from Sudden Neck Motion: Clinical Insights.

BACKGROUND The thyroid cartilage is the most prominent laryngeal cartilage located beneath the hyoid bone. Non-traumatic fractures of the larynx, including the thyroid cartilage, are rare and can occur when the glottis is closed and intrathoracic pressure suddenly increases. This report describes the case of a 42-year-old man presenting with hoarseness and pain when swallowing and a diagnosis of non-traumatic thyroid cartilage fracture following sudden neck movement, highlighting the importance of recognizing atypical mechanisms of laryngeal injury. CASE REPORT A 42-year-old healthy man experi

Acute intestinal obstruction caused by endoscopic submucosal dissection: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is considered one of the effective and minimally invasive methods for managing lateral spreading tumors of the intestine. However, with the widespread adoption of this technique, the incidence of complications is expected to increase. The most common complications of ESD are hemorrhage and perforation. Rare cases of obstruction after colorectal ESD have been reported, which are often easily misdiagnosed. Therefore, clinicians should maintain heightened awareness of this complication. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 50-year-old male who

Validation of a new acoustic telemetry transmitter for the study of predation events in small fishes.

Acoustic telemetry has emerged as an important tool for studying the movement and behavior of aquatic animals. Predation-sensing acoustic transmitters combine the functions of typical acoustic transmitters with the added ability to identify the predation of tagged animals. The objective of this paper was to assess the performance of a newly miniaturized acid-based predation-sensing acoustic transmitter (Innovasea V3D; 0.33 g in air). We conducted staged predation events in the laboratory where acoustically tagged rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were fed to largemouth bass (Micropterus nigr

Bilateral chronic cavitary pulmonary aspergillomas in an adult patient with recurrent tuberculosis: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillomas are globular growths of Aspergillus fumigatus, a benign aspergillosis of the lungs. It usually affects patients who are immunocompromised and have anatomically defective lung structures. The majority of aspergilloma cases are asymptomatic, despite the fact that 10% of cases spontaneously resolve. Most patients do not have any symptoms from their lesions. Direct serological or microbiological evidence of an Aspergillus species along with radiologic evidence is required for the diagnosis of an aspergilloma. CASE: We describe a 35-year-old adult Oromo male patient who h

Mucociliary Clearance Augmenting Drugs Block SARS-Cov-2 Replication in Human Airway Epithelial Cells.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, is devastatingly impacting human health. A prominent component of COVID-19 is the infection and destruction of the ciliated respiratory cells, which perpetuates dissemination and disrupts protective mucociliary transport (MCT) function, an innate defense of the respiratory tract. Thus, drugs that augment MCT could improve barrier function of the airway epithelium, reduce viral replication and, ultimately, COVID-19 outcomes. We tested five agents known to increase MCT through distinct mechanisms for activity against
