BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Health impairment due to alcohol use and abuse is well known, in terms of relationship with traffic accidents and work accidents. In Italy almost 10 per cent of accidents at work involve intoxicated people injuring themselves and innocent victims. Alcohol abuse is a factor involved in determining severe accidents in the construction industry and epidemiological studies demonstrated a relationship between an elevated alcohol use and severity of accidents. Since in the Province of Belluno alcohol consumption may be elevated also at work, the two Occupational Health Uni

A serious challenge in diagnosing fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the need to document alcohol use during pregnancy. Maternal/paternal alcohol abuse affects the likelihood of fetal alcohol exposure, and hence the occurrence of FASD. The objective of the current study was to document the use of the fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) hair test, a biomarker of excessive alcohol use, in parents at risk of having children with FASD and quantify the prevalence of alcohol use in this population. Hair samples submitted for FAEE testing between October 2005 and May 2007 were evaluated (n = 324). S

The authors tested a mediation model in which childhood hostility and sociability were expected to influence the development of intentions to use alcohol in the future through the mediating mechanisms of developing attitudes and norms. Children in 1st through 5th grades (N=1,049) from a western Oregon community participated in a longitudinal study involving 4 annual assessments. Hostility and sociability were assessed by teachers' ratings at the 1st assessment, and attitudes, subjective norms, and intentions were assessed by self-report at all 4 assessments. For both genders, latent growth mod

BACKGROUND: The present study examined judgment processes of individuals with and without a family history of alcohol abuse. Despite the alarming statistics involving alcohol-related consequences in this population, very little is known about what judgment processes they use or how beneficial these processes are at preventing intoxication and alcohol-related consequences.
METHODS: Participants were 270 individuals, 16-18 years old, screened on the basis of the history of family alcohol abuse. Individuals were asked to (1) make judgments of drunkenness in relation to the legal limits in respon

Twenty-two patients (mean age, 48.5 years) suspected of early chronic alcoholic pancreatitis, who had ductal changes mainly in the side branches, were followed by serial endoscopic retrograde pancreatography (ERP). Follow-up ranged from 1.1 to 11.9 years (mean, 5.4). Serial ERP revealed deterioration in six patients (27%), five of whom had outflow disturbance of the main pancreatic duct. On the other hand, five patients presented slight progressive changes restricted to the side branches and the remaining 11 patients showed no change. None of the 12 patients who abstained from drinking showed

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) typically is observed among individuals with high prenatal alcohol exposures (PAE), but exposure histories obtained in clinical diagnostic settings are often inaccurate. The present analysis used the Lifestyle During Pregnancy Study (LDPS) to assess the potential effects of low-to-moderate average weekly alcohol consumption and binge drinking in early pregnancy on facial features associated with FAS among children 5 years of age.
METHODS: The analysis is a prospective follow-up study of 670 women and their children sampled from the LDPS cohort based on

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) affect 15 million people nationwide, 4% of which are adolescents (ages 12-17) and adolescents who binge drink significantly increase their likelihood of suffering from an AUD in adulthood. Research shows that cues (i.e. flavors) paired with alcohol (EtOH) produce significant cue-induced alcohol craving and contribute to relapse in adolescent and adult populations. However, there is a lack of research focused on how cues that accompany EtOH drinking during adolescence, affect EtOH craving later in life. The current study sought to examine the sex- and de

Background: In Nepal, alcohol consumption is traditionally accepted within the religious and cultural practices of tribal communities. The Dhankuta district of Nepal, a hilly area of Eastern Nepal, is home to many indigenous and tribal communities. However, the socio-demographic and socio-contextual factors related to problematic alcohol drinking in these high-risk groups remain unexplored. Objectives: To examine how socio-demographic and socio-contextual factors contribute to predictors of problematic drinking in the Eastern Hills of Nepal. Methods: A case-control study was conducted in the Dha…

Alcohol intake is known to influence serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), yet how drinking patterns shape this association is less researched. We examined whether frequency of drinking versus amount per occasion was differently related to HDL-C in a large population sample. Data were taken from a cross-sectional study of 18,614 respondents aged 40-79 years in the Tromsø general population health study. Alcohol use was assessed by self-report. Fasting HDL-C was measured using standardized laboratory protocols. Mean alcohol intake was 6.7 g/day and mean HDL-C 1.57 mmol/L. Total al

BACKGROUND: Although alcohol outlet density (AOD) is associated with drinking behaviors in the general population, little evidence exists about this relationship among people who inject drugs (PWID). Establishing this connection is particularly important, as alcohol use exacerbates the risk of opioid overdose. This study investigated 1) the association between ZIP code-level AOD and binge drinking among PWID who use opioids, and 2) the potential moderating effect of race/ethnicity on the AOD-binge drinking relationship.
METHODS: This analysis linked 2018 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (

Objective: We examined current alcohol use and binge drinking among college students, by Veteran status. Participants: Students that completed the 2021-2022 Healthy Minds Study, with complete demographic, alcohol use, and mental health data (n = 78,446). Methods: Weighted logistic regression models examined the relationship between Veteran status and past two-week alcohol use; and among those currently using alcohol, whether Veteran status was associated with any binge drinking. Models controlled for age, gender, race and ethnicity, and mental health conditions. We replicated models within the

INTRODUCTION: To combat high-risk alcohol consumption, we introduced a 30-day alcohol abstinence challenge targeted at heavy drinkers with and without chronic pain. Our study aimed to assess the challenge's feasibility and safety and to explore its perceived benefits. Our exploratory aim was to identify participants' coping strategies during the challenge.
METHODS: Our single-arm study recruited heavy drinkers from a pain clinic and a university setting (n = 34, 64.7% chronic pain). Participants underwent a modified community-based 30-day challenge, which included motivational interviewing, a

Binge drinking (BD) contributes strongly to the harms of alcohol use disorder. Most rodent models do not result in binge-level blood alcohol concentrations (BACs), and to better understand individual and sex differences in neurobiological mechanisms related to BD, the use of outbred rat strains would be valuable. Here, we developed a novel BD model where after 3+ months of intermittent access to 20% alcohol Wistar rats drank, twice a week, with two 5-minute intake (what we called Two-shot) separated by a 10-minute break. Our findings showed during Two-Shot that most animals reached ≥ 80mg% BAC

OBJECTIVE: Undergraduate students are at particular risk for greater alcohol use, which is linked to anxiety disorders among a variety of other negative consequences. Understanding transdiagnostic factors underlying alcohol use problems and other disorders, such as anxiety and mood disorders, can help identify potential targets for intervention.
METHOD: The present study (N = 208 undergraduates; 76.9% female) tested relations between self-reported anxiety sensitivity, panic symptoms, alcohol use and problems, and two different measures of distress tolerance. Specifically, the distress toleran

BACKGROUND: Sexual assault (SA) is experienced by a substantial proportion of emerging adult college students and is associated with elevated rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use. This study examines the mediating role of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in the associations among SA severity, drinking to cope with anxiety, and average weekly drinks while considering the moderating roles of gender identity and sexual orientation.
METHODS: A total of 2160 college students who were diverse in gender (cisgender women, 64.4%; cisgender men, 30.6%, and transgender and g

Emerging research suggests that there may be important links between social networking site (SNS) use and alcohol consumption specific to COVID-19. In addition, substantial research indicates that descriptive normative perceptions are a strong predictor of drinking behavior more generally. However, less is known about SNS-specific norms and how they might be associated with health-related behavior. Thus, the primary goal of this study was to determine whether descriptive normative perceptions for alcohol posting related to COVID-19 on SNSs are associated with both personal SNS posting behavior
