The Alcohol Clinical Index in lower socioeconomic alcohol-dependent men.

The Alcohol Clinical Index, consisting of a 17-item Clinical Signs checklist and a 13-item Medical History questionnaire, was designed to pr … ty of the Medical History questionnaire suggests that it could be used to help discriminate between alcoholics and nonalcoholics. Further study of these measures and individual items within the measures is recommended with different groups of alcohol users and nonusers.

[Alcohol and the liver: ethanol metabolism and the pathomechanism of alcoholic liver damage].

Ethanol is oxidized in the liver by three different enzyme systems, namely by alcohol dehidrogenase (ADH), the microsomal ethanol oxidizing system and catalase. Alcohol also undergoes a first pass metabolism in the gastric mucosa due to alcohol dehydrogenase. This first pass metabolism of ethanol is decreased in the alcoholic, in the fasted state, in the elderly and during cimetidine therapy leading to elevated alcohol blood-concentrations. Ethanol toxicity is closely related to its metabolism in the liver. Ethanol oxidation by ADH generates reducing equivalents (NADH) and acetaldehyde (AA). T

Neuropsychological deficits in fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol effects.

A clinical sample of 19 school-aged native children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or fetal alcohol effects (FAE) was compared with age- and sex-matched normal controls. Results on a battery of intellectual and neuropsychological tests indicated large and significant differences between alcohol-affected children and controls. FAS differed significantly from controls on measures of intellectual abilities, while FAE did not; FAS mean scores on these measures were significantly lower than FAE means. For neuropsychological measures, FAS were significantly poorer than controls on most

[Mild forms of alcoholic embryopathy following excessive use of alcohol].

Within 15 years 171 children with fetal alcohol syndrome were diagnosed. Eight children showed an unusual low susceptibility to the harmful effects of alcohol in utero with mild expression of fetal alcohol syndrome or so-called alcohol effects, inspite of excessive maternal drinking (more than 180 gs alcohol per day). Increased tolerance of alcohol might be explained by two mechanisms: 1. By metabolic adaptation, mainly by swift increase of alcohol metabolizing; 2. by biochemical and structural adaptation at cellular membranes after chronic alcohol ingestion. The grade of severity in fetal alc

Cyanamide injections during alcohol deprivation increase alcohol drinking.

Long-Evans male rats were given 7 weeks of choice between 10% ethanol and water and then were divided into 6 matched groups, 3 of which were then deprived of alcohol for 6 days. Subcutaneous cyanamide injections (10 mg/kg, 3 times daily, for 4 days) during alcohol deprivation produced a long lasting, significant increase in subsequent alcohol selection, over and above the increase produced by alcohol deprivation alone. The same injections given to a group not deprived of alcohol caused a significant suppression of alcohol drinking during the treatment and had disappeared 4 days after the last

Alcoholic foamy degeneration--a pattern of acute alcoholic injury of the liver.

A newly recognized clinical and morphologic pattern of acute alcoholic liver disease is described. Twenty-one patients, having the hepatic morphologic features of alcoholic foamy degeneration, were retrospectively analyzed. All patients had a significant history of chronic alcoholism. Jaundice and hepatomegaly were usually present. Hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, bleeding esophageal varices, or functional renal failure occurred in less than 10%. Usually this was the first episode of decompensation. Laboratory studies revealed a pattern of very transiently marked elevation of serum aminotransf

Alcoholism indicators: nonreliability of events partially related to alcohol abuse.

Certain events partially associated with alcohol abuse (e.g., all hepatic cirrhosis) as well as those wholly associated with alcohol abuse (e.g., alcoholic cirrhosis) have been used to assess changes in alcoholism rates over time. In this paper, events partially associated with alcohol abuse are compared with events wholly correlated with alcohol abuse. Location and time of the study was the state of Minnesota from 1965 to 1977. Taken as a whole, the partially related events fail to show an increase in alcoholism while the wholly related events point to an increase. The literature on these alc

Effect of environmental alcohol on in vivo properties of Drosophila alcohol dehydrogenase.

The effects of environmental 2-propanol on the in vivo properties of Drosophila alcohol dehydrogenase (E.C. 1..1.1.1.) are presented. Exposed flies were found to exhibit a significant decrease in ADH specific activity with a concomitant increase in the enzyme's relative in vivo stability and concentration. The possible adaptive significance of the observed responses is discussed.

Breath-alcohol analysis as a surrogate for blood-alcohol concentration depends on assuming a constant blood/breath ratio of alcohol.

The ratio of blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) to breath-alcohol concentration (BrAC), which is commonly referred to as the blood/breath ratio (BBR), is an important concept in forensic science and legal medicine. For example, the BBR serves as the calibration factor used when a breath-alcohol test result is converted into the coexisting BAC for clinical, research, and forensic purposes. Furthermore, when legislative bodies established statutory BrAC limits for driving, they divided the statutory BAC limit by an assumed population average BBR, hence BrAC = BAC/BBR. However, jurisdictions opted

Perceived Risk of Binge Drinking among Older Alcohol Users: Associations with Alcohol Use Frequency, Binge Drinking, Alcohol Use Disorder, and Alcohol Treatment Use.

Despite the high prevalence of alcohol use and binge drinking among older adults, little research has been conducted on the association between their alcohol risk perception and alcohol use patterns. Using data on past-year alcohol users aged 50 and older (N = 6693) in the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we examined the (1) associations between risk perception of binge alcohol use 1-2 times a week and alcohol use frequency, binge use frequency, and alcohol use disorder (AUD), and (2) the association between alcohol treatment use and risk perception. About 40% of past-year alcohol

National Task Force on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effect: defining the national agenda for fetal alcohol syndrome and other prenatal alcohol-related effects.

Prenatal alcohol exposure can lead to serious birth defects and developmental disabilities. A need exists to develop effective strategies for both children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or other prenatal alcohol-related effects and for women at high risk for having an alcohol-exposed pregnancy. Since the syndrome was identified approximately 30 years ago, advancements have been made in FAS diagnostics, surveillance, prevention, and intervention, but a substantial amount of work remains. Collaborations among partners in federal state, and local agencies, academia, clinical professions, scho

Alterations in Neurotrophins in Alcohol-Addicted Patients during Alcohol Withdrawal.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is related to mental and somatic disorders that result in alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS), with 30% of AWS cases leading to life-threatening delirium tremens (DTs). Currently, studies do not support using any one biomarker in DTs. Neurotrophins affect neuromodulation, playing a role in the pathogenesis of AUD, AWS, and DTs. METHODS: This review aims to summarize experimental and clinical data related to neurotrophins and S100B in neuroplasticity, as well as neurodegeneration in the context of AUD, AWS, and DTs. This work used publications that were sel
