OBJECTIVE: Loss of teeth frequently results in compound horizontal and vertical alveolar bone defects. An appropriate bone structure is the key for implant placement and bony support of soft tissues. Advanced bone augmentation techniques are required for the reconstruction of these defects. This report will present a new bone block grafting technique with 12-month follow-up.
METHOD: The seedling technique was used to augment the alveolar bone 3-dimensionally with autologous bone block and an osseointegrated implant in a 2-stage procedure. Horizontal and vertical bone loss is revealed after co

OBJECTIVE: The mere osseointegration of an implant should no longer be considered a satisfactory criterion for success. Tooth extraction itself and, more importantly, possible local comorbidities such as periodontal or endodontic diseases, cause a reduction in the gingival volume of the edentulous site due to bone atrophy. This reduced volume must be treated and resolved to obtain a satisfactory esthetic result, which is an essential factor for successful implant rehabilitation. The classic approach to this problem relies on bone augmentation procedures. However, the present clinical study is

In pre-implant surgery, the autologous bone graft can be harvested from various sites. The tibial diaphysis cortical bone gives a very dense graft which does not resorb. It can be crushed for sinus filling, or used in a monoblock as apposition graft or to repair alveolar cleft sequels. Its availability, its simple and speedy harvesting, and its very low morbidity make it a good choice for most pre-implant reconstructive procedures.

BACKGROUND: Regenerative periodontal surgery utilizing a combination of an enamel matrix protein derivative (EMD) and a natural bone mineral (NBM) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been shown to enhance the outcomes of regenerative surgery significantly. At present, it is unknown whether root conditioning with EMD, followed by defect fill with a combination of NBM+PRP may additionally enhance the clinical results obtained with EMD+NBM.
AIM: To compare clinically the treatment of deep intrabony defects with either EMD+NBM+PRP or EMD+NBM.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-six patients suffering fr

BACKGROUND: Sequelae related to implant placement/advanced bone grafting procedures are a result of injury to surrounding anatomic structures. Damage may not necessarily lead to implant failure; however, it is the most common cause of legal action against the practitioner. This study aimed to describe morphological aspects and variations of the anatomy directly related to implant treatment.
METHODS: Morphometric analyses were performed in 22 Caucasian skulls. Measurements of the mental foramen (MF) included height (MF-H), width (MF-W), and location in relation to other known anatomical landma

BACKGROUND: Complication rates after sinus floor augmentation of up to 10% are mentioned in literature, often when heterologous bone implants are used. The aim of our retrospective study was to determine the complication rate involving the maxillary sinus of patients treated with autologous spongiosa.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 46 patients with an absolute maxillary atrophy (61% female, 39% male, mean age 49 years), a sinus floor augmentation, if necessary combined with an onlay bone graft of the iliac crest, was performed. Implants (Brånemark) were placed in a two-stage procedure after 3-6 mon

Patients and clinicians are becoming increasingly aware of the need to improve dental esthetics. After tooth extraction or trauma, there may be residual hard- or soft-tissue defects. These may be related to deficits in the bone or soft tissue. The evaluation of preoperative study casts, radiographs, and photographic documentation can aid the clinician in determining which types of augmentation are necessary. If adequate bone volume is present, the implants are placed according to protocol. Soft-tissue defects can be significantly reduced by implanting various biomaterials between the inner bor

Cleidocranial dysplasia is a rare condition that presents a variety of problems for the restorative dentist. This article defines the basic characteristics, including the oral manifestations, of cleidocranial dysplasia and describes some of the available treatment modalities. It also presents a case in which iliac crest bone grafts and endosseous implants were used in the maxillary arch in an attempt to provide a retentive and esthetic overdenture for a young patient. Discussion of this case includes several questions concerning the rationale for using osseointegrated implants for a patient wi

BACKGROUND: Treatment of post-resective defects of the maxilla can be challenging and usually requires dental obturation or microvascular reconstruction. As compared to soft-tissue microvascular grafts, bone reconstruction can additionally allow for facial support and retention of dental implants. The aim of this study was to evaluate scapular tip grafts with respect to their applicability for maxillary reconstruction and their potential to retain dental implants for later dental rehabilitation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, 14 patients with hemimaxillectomy defects were

The purpose of this article is to describe reconstruction of the maxillary alveolar ridge by use of a microvascular free flap combined with an immediate tissue-engineered bone graft. This novel surgical technique involved the use of a radial forearm free flap and immediate allogeneic avascular bone graft augmented with bone morphogenetic protein and bone marrow aspirate concentrate. A poly-d,l-lactic acid mesh was used as a containment unit for the bone graft. The patient was successfully treated with a viable radial forearm free flap for soft tissue and regeneration of bone with adequate heig

BACKGROUND: An insufficient bone volume at the maxillary anterior region often restricts dental implant treatment and commonly leads to poor aesthetic outcomes. The defective site requires bone grafting as an initial surgical intervention before dental implant placement. In dental implantology, reconstructing osseous defects using autologous block bone grafts, biomaterials, or a combination of both is a routine surgical procedure. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of autogenous, symphyseal, bone ring block grafts after the augmentation of defective sockets and clinical application of gr
