Relationship between elevated habituation tendencies and impulsivity, compulsivity, and childhood adversity among abstinent patients with methamphetamine use disorders.

Elevated habituation tendencies have been identified in several subgroups of patients with substance use disorders, however, their intricate relationship with substance use disorders remains unknown. A total of 133 individuals with methamphetamine use disorder (PwMUD) and 131 healthy controls (HC) were initially recruited for this study. After exclusion of outliers, data from 128 PwMUD and 125 HC were included in the analyses. Participants reported their habituation tendencies, drug-use characteristics, impulsivity, compulsivity, and experiences of childhood adversity through self-report scale

Mechanisms underlying methamphetamine-induced disruption of testicular integrity.

Methamphetamine (METH) abuse is a global health concern with serious repercussions, including potential disruption of the male reproductive system. Testicular integrity is particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of METH. This review aims to comprehensively examine the current literature to elucidate the key mechanisms by which METH induces testicular damage, focusing on the cellular and molecular pathways involved. A systematic literature search was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Keywords included "methamphetamine," "testicular toxicity," "reproducti

POOR VISUAL OUTCOMES IN SYPHILITIC UVEITIS ASSOCIATED WITH METHAMPHETAMINE USE: A CASE SERIES.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the potential link between methamphetamine use and infectious syphilitic uveitis through a retrospective chart review of four patients with both conditions. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on four patients with a history of methamphetamine use and presented with vision loss at an emergency department or clinic that was ultimately diagnosed as syphilitic uveitis. RESULTS: The average age of the four patients was 41.5 ± 9.8 years, and each presented with symptoms of blurry vision after an average of 3 weeks. Clinical and serologic ex

Impact of methamphetamine use on HIV and other health outcomes at an urban HIV medicine clinic.

BACKGROUND: The methamphetamine epidemic threatens progress towards ending the HIV epidemic in the United States. Further characterizing the prevalence and impact of methamphetamine use among people with HIV (PWH) is necessary to inform integrated HIV and methamphetamine treatment strategies. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review to characterize methamphetamine use among 3092 PWH at an urban HIV Medicine clinic between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. The chi-squared test was utilized to assess for statistically significant differences in demographics and HIV and other health outc

Cognitive deficits in methamphetamine addiction: Independent contributions of dependence and intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine's effects on brain function have been associated with cognitive deficits, which have a negative impact on clinical outcomes. However, it remains unclear if cognitive deficits relate to methamphetamine dependence (potentially amenable to abstinence and retraining) or background characteristics, mental health and other drug use. We tested the association between methamphetamine dependence and cognitive performance, while factoring in the impact of background characteristics, depressive symptoms and tobacco, alcohol and cannabis use. METHOD: The sample comprised 108 t

Usefulness of Left Ventricular Assist Device in the Recovery of Severe Amphetamine-Associated Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

Exposure to synthetic drugs such as amphetamines may lead to significant consequences on the cardiovascular system. The prognosis of young adults with amphetamine-induced cardiomyopathy remains poor. We present 2 young patients (aged <40 years) who developed severe dilated cardiomyopathy after chronic amphetamine use. Thorough psychological evaluations demonstrated favorable features with patients being reliable and committed to their health problems. A left ventricular assist device (HeartMate II; Abbott, Chicago, IL) was implanted in the patients shortly after admission to optimize hemodynam

Effectiveness of methamphetamine abuse treatment: Predictors of treatment completion and comparison of two residential treatment programs.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing demand of evidence-based treatment options for methamphetamine users, but research in this field is limited. This study therefore evaluates the efficacy of two residential treatment programs for methamphetamine users. METHOD: A total of 108 patients with a history of methamphetamine abuse from two inpatient rehabilitation centers were studied for psychiatric symptoms, craving, psychosocial resources, and cognitive functioning at the start and end of therapy. Patients from one center ("amphetamine type stimulant group") received conventional group therapy plu

Regional differences in white matter integrity in stimulant use disorders: A meta-analysis of diffusion tensor imaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Converging lines of evidence from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies reveal significant alterations in white matter (WM) microstructure in the prefrontal cortex of chronic stimulant users compared to controls, suggesting compromised axonal microstructure and/or myelin. METHODS: A meta-analysis of DTI-based WM integrity was conducted for white matter regions across the corpus callosum and association fibers. Articles were sourced and selected using PRISMA guidelines for systematic review and meta-analysis. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were determined by the authors in order

Differentially classified methamphetamine-using men who have sex with men: A latent class analysis.

CONTEXT: Substance use interventions for methamphetamine-using men who have sex with men (MSM) are limited by the assumption that they are a uniform group. We hypothesized that an LCA would identify distinct patterns of substance use and demographic and psychosocial variables associated with different substance-using groups would aid in understanding distinctions. Using cross-sectional data from 343 methamphetamine-using MSM, we conducted an LCA to model the patterns of polysubstance use then examined how the classes varied on psychosocial variables defined by the Information-Motivation-Behavi

A qualitative study of methamphetamine initiation in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Despite a significant rise in methamphetamine use in low- and middle-income countries, there has been little empirical examination of the factors that contribute to individuals' initiation of methamphetamine use in these settings. The goal of this study was to qualitatively examine factors associated with methamphetamine initiation in South Africa. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 active methamphetamine users (13 women and 17 men) in Cape Town, South Africa. Interviews included narrative descriptions of the circumstances surrounding methamphetamine initiation. I

Methamphetamine use can mimic testicular torsion.

We report the case of a patient presenting with the classic clinical appearance of testicular torsion. Ultrasound showed testicular ischemia supporting the clinical diagnosis, but the lack of visualization of spermatic cord torsion was of concern. An attempt of clinical detorsion was considered unsuccessful and the patient was explored. No torsion was found. On postoperative review of the patient's medical history, we found methamphetamine use, with a positive urine test at the time of his emergent consultation for the scrotal pain episode. The use of amphetamines has been previously reported

Female sex workers who use amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) in three cities of Vietnam: use and sexual risks related to HIV/AIDS.

Early evidence shows that amphetamine-type stimulant (ATS) use has been rapidly increasing in Vietnam. Female sex workers (FSWs) who use ATSs have increased sexual risks for HIV infection. This paper presents qualitative data from a mixed-method study conducted from 2010 to 2011 that aimed to explore the use of ATS among FSWs in three major cities and to identify HIV-related sexual risks among this group. A total of 37 in-depth interviews were conducted, and thematic analysis was performed using NVIVO 8.0 software. Study participants reported that they perceive ATS to be more 'stylish', 'highe

Prenatal exposure to testosterone interacts with lifetime physical abuse to predict anger rumination and cognitive flexibility among incarcerated methamphetamine users.

The present pilot study hypothesized that degree of exposure to prenatal testosterone interacts with a history of lifetime physical abuse (LPA) to predict the cognitive (anger rumination) and behavioral (intimate partner and interpersonal violence) components of aggression within incarcerated methamphetamine (MA) users. In addition, we hypothesized that the degree of exposure to prenatal testosterone interacts with LPA to predict cognitive flexibility (Stroop Color-Word performance). Male inmate MA users (N = 60) completed neuropsychological and paper/pencil tests. Hand photocopies were also o

Treatments for methamphetamine abuse: a literature review for the clinician.

Methamphetamine (METH) use and dependence is a serious public health concern with implications across multiple areas from societal impact to burden on psychiatric and medical resources. An estimated 8% of admissions to substance abuse treatment programs are related to stimulants with METH/amphetamine abuse. To date, effective pharmacotherapy options to enhance abstinence have not been identified. The objective of this article is to critically review the literature of METH treatment options. Preclinical research and human research with compounds not yet available commercially in the United Stat

Women with methamphetamine dependence: research on etiology and treatment.

The epidemic of methamphetamine dependence is spreading eastward across the United States. Unlike the gender ratio associated with most other drugs of abuse, the proportion of woman methamphetamine users is nearly equal to men. This review will describe reasons why women begin use of methamphetamine, especially those that differ from the usual reasons for initiating drug use. The characteristics of women users at entry into treatment also differ from those of men, especially in regard to employment, psychological symptoms, and history of abuse and violence in their lives. Finally, the review w

Neuropsychological function and delay discounting in methamphetamine-dependent individuals.

RATIONALE: Methamphetamine (MA) dependence accounts for substantial neuropsychiatric morbidity. Furthermore, there is evidence in the literature of psychiatric and cognitive impairment in chronic users. OBJECTIVES: This report compares the general psychiatric and cognitive functioning, including impulsive decision-making, of individuals dependent on MA and normal controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one currently abstinent individuals in treatment for MA dependence and 41 controls participated. Controls were selected to minimize group differences in age and gender. MA users met DSM-IV crit

Altered response to tryptophan supplementation after long-term abstention from MDMA (ecstasy) is highly correlated with human memory function.

RATIONALE: MDMA (ecstasy; +3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) damages brain serotonin (5-HT) neurons and, in non-human primates, a loss of various 5-HT axonal markers persists for several years. This raises the question of whether long lasting effects occur in human beings that persist even after they have stopped using MDMA. OBJECTIVES: We therefore assessed the effects of an indirect 5-HT manipulation on functions thought to be affected by MDMA use in people who had stopped using MDMA (ex-users) compared with continuing users and non-users. METHODS: Ninety-six participants were recruited:

Gender differences in the behavioral responses to cocaine and amphetamine. Implications for mechanisms mediating gender differences in drug abuse.

When ovariectomized female rats receive estrogen, the response to the psychomotor stimulants amphetamine or cocaine is enhanced. Estrous cycle-dependent differences in amphetamine-stimulated behaviors and striatal dopamine release are also noted. Intact female rats exhibit a greater behavioral response to amphetamine on estrus than they do on other days of the cycle. Ovariectomy results in attenuation of amphetamine-induced behavior and the striatal dopamine response to amphetamine. Physiological doses of estrogen given to ovariectomized rats reinstate both of these responses to a level compar
