Human Intestinal Infection with the Dog Hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum, in Western Australia.

Rare cases of aphthous ulceration and eosinophilic enteritis in humans caused by Ancylostoma caninum (A. caninum), a common intestinal nematode of dogs worldwide, have been reported over the past century in several regions of the world. The present report involves a case of aphthous ulceration of the colon caused by A. caninum in Western Australia. The identity of the worm recovered during routine colonoscopy of a 35-year-old immunocompetent male was confirmed via morphological analysis and sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene and nuclear ribosomal internal trans

Surveillance of Ancylostoma caninum in naturally infected dogs in Quebec, Canada, and assessment of benzimidazole anthelmintics reveal a variable efficacy with the presence of a resistant isolate in imported dogs.

Ancylostoma caninum is a widely prevalent parasitic nematode in dogs across the world. There has been a notable increase in reports of anthe … for the USA-origin group. The coprology analyses found several genera of internal parasites. Canine ancylostomiasis was the most prevalent parasitosis with 30.77% in the native group and 100% in the USA group, but with overall low average of A. caninum eggs per gram. Through the fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT), applying a cut-off at 90% as baseline of egg …

[Upper gastrointestinal bleeding induced by hookworm infection: one case report].

This paper reports a case of upper gastrointestinal bleeding induced by hookworm infection, which was misdiagnosed at the beginning, and analyzes the causes of misdiagnosis.

Biological control of infective larvae of Ancylostoma spp. in beach sand.

BACKGROUND: Geohelminths are parasites that stand out for their prevalence and wide distribution, depending on the soil for their transmission. AIMS: The aim of this work was to evaluate the predatory capacity of the fungal isolate of the genus Duddingtonia (CG768) on third stage larvae (L3) of Ancylostoma spp. in beach sand under laboratory conditions. METHODS: In the assay A five treatment groups and 1 control group were formed. The treatment groups contained 5000, 10,000, 15,000, 20,000 or 25,000 chlamydospores of the fungal isolate and 1000 Ancylostoma spp. L3 in pots containing 30g of s

Hookworm infection in a healthy adult that manifested as severe eosinphilia and diarrhea.

A 54-year-old male was admitted because of having suffered from progressive watery diarrhea for 12 days. He had no history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart disease, organ transplantation, or malignancy. After admission, he still complained of diarrhea despite medical treatment. The laboratory examination showed leukocytosis with eosinophilia and a stool examination by the concentration method was negative four times. When a sigmoidoscopy was performed as a part of an explorative survey, a single protruding mass consisting if a moving adult hookworm was found. The fifth stool examinati

A history of hookworm vaccine development.

The human hookworms Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale remain among the most common infections of humans in areas of rural poverty in the developing regions of the world, with an estimated 1 billion people infected with one or more of these parasites. Herein, we review the nearly 100 years of research, development, animal testing, and fieldwork that have led to our current progress in recombinant hookworm vaccines. We begin with the identification of hookworm at the start of the 20th century in Southern US, then discuss the progress in developed countries to eliminate human hookworm

Utility of capsule endoscopy for evaluating anthelmintic efficacy in fully conscious dogs.

The current accepted standard for evaluating the efficacy of gastrointestinal anthelmintic drugs is necropsy of infected animals followed by a comparison of worm counts between treated and non-treated groups. In this study capsule endoscopy, a minimally invasive method of imaging the small intestine of humans, is evaluated as a possible alternative to necropsy for the purposes of worm quantification in dogs. Eighteen Beagle dogs were included in this study. These dogs were part of a separate trial intended to determine the efficacy of various candidate parasiticides against Ancylostoma caninum

Hookworms of dogs and cats as agents of cutaneous larva migrans.

Dogs and cats are hosts to hookworms that may cause zoonotic disease, most notably, cutaneous larva migrans. Ancylostoma braziliense is most often implicated in dermatological lesions, and Ancylostoma caninum has been associated with eosinophilic enteritis and suggested as a possible cause of diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis in humans. Other manifestations include eosinophilic pneumonitis, localized myositis, folliculitis, erythema multiforme, or ophthalmological manifestations. Ancylostoma eggs are morphologically indistinguishable, which complicates epidemiological studies. Surveys

The protective capacity of UV-exposed Clinostomum complanatum metacercariae against challenge infections in Ardeola ibis ibis.

Exposure of encysted metacercariae of Clinostomum complanatum to UV light (254 nm) for 60 min reduced their development into adult worms in buff-backed herons (95.7% reduction in worm burden). Metacercariae that succeeded in developing into adult worms, showed low fecundity levels. Furthermore, 30% of eggs laid showed abnormal shape; however, all normal and abnormal eggs failed to hatch into miracidia. The effectiveness of UV-irradiated metacercariae as a vaccine was investigated. Compared to control unvaccinated herons, the vaccinated group showed a significantly high protection rate (73.8%)

Ancylostoma caninum MTP-1, an astacin-like metalloprotease secreted by infective hookworm larvae, is involved in tissue migration.

Infective larvae (L3) of nematodes secrete macromolecules that are critical to infection and establishment of the parasite in the host. The dog hookworm Ancylostoma caninum secretes an astacin-like metalloprotease, Ac-MTP-1, upon activation in vitro with host serum. Recombinant Ac-MTP-1 was expressed in the baculovirus/insect cell system as a secreted protein and was purified from culture medium by two separate methods, cation-exchange fast-performance liquid chromatography and gelatin-affinity chromatography. Recombinant MTP-1 was catalytically active and digested a range of native and denatu
