The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of tumour and patient characteristics on trends in the survival of patients with cancer of the anus or rectum in England and Wales. A total of 132,542 adults (15-99 years) who were diagnosed during the 14 years 1986-1999 were followed up to 2001 through the National Health Service Central Register. Relative survival up to 5 years after diagnosis was estimated, using deprivation-specific life tables. Generalised linear models were used to estimate relative excess risks of death, adjusted for patient and tumour characteristics. The results sho

Primary anorectal malignant melanoma is a fairly uncommon but highly malignant disease. This disease is sometimes mistaken for such benign conditions as either a hemorrhoid or rectal polyp. We herein describe a case of early primary malignant melanoma of the anal canal. In this case, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was found to be useful for diagnosing the melanotic melanoma. We especially emphasize the usefulness of a fat-saturation MR image in distinguishing melanotic melanoma from other rectal tumors.

We report a case of syringoma clinically presenting as milia in the perianal region. Milium-like syringoma is an unusual clinical variant of the tumor, and this is, to our knowledge, the first reported case occurring perianally.

Seven patients with perianal and anorectal giant condyloma acuminatum (Buschke-Loewenstein tumour) are presented. In five of these patients histopathological examination of the lesions disclosed varying degrees of dysplasia and/or squamous carcinoma. The clinicopathological features and aetiology of perianal and anorectal condylomata acuminata, giant condyloma acuminatum and verrucous carcinoma are discussed. The viral induction and malignant transformation of these papillomatous squamous lesions are emphasized.

10 patients with anal or rectal cancers were given liquid nitrogen cryogenic treatment. In 5 cases the treatment was given prior to abdominoperineal amputation of the rectum. The remaining 5 inoperable cases were given the cryogenic treatment alone, followed, in 3 cases by derivative colostomy. Histological reports on the removed tissues, carried out at different times after the cryogenic treatment, showed the effects of the treatment on the neoplasias and the surrounding tissues and showed the histological equivalent of possible local immunological processes. The thrombosis in the surrounding

We present the case of a 63-year-old male with long-term anal pain. A pelvic MRI was performed showing a tumor arising from the intersphincteric extending into the submucosal layer of the posterior rectal wall. The image was compatible with a cT4N0 ano-rectal carcinoma without any distant metastasis on the CT scan. Histopathology showed neoplastic proliferation cells arranged in nodules and nidus consistent with anal glands adenocarcinoma with a positive immunohistostaining for CK7 and MUC5+ .

Over the past decade, the ever-increasing volume of evidence implicating HPV types in genital neoplasia has stimulated much research interest into all aspects of the biology of this interesting group of viruses. This has led to the identification of an ever-increasing heterogeneity of HPV types. It is not surprising, therefore, that the clinical profile of disease associated with genital HPV types is much broader than previously recognized. Knowledge of this clinical spectrum is mandatory to the understanding of the possible role of specific HPV types in human carcinogenesis.

Seventy-five patients with anogenital warts were biopsied in the Center for Sexually Transmitted Disease of Galliera Hospital (Genoa). Bioptic specimens were processed for histologic examination, immunohistochemistry using polyclonal antibodies against HPV capsid common antigens and in situ hybridization using HPV 6/11, 16/18, 31/35/51 DNA probes. The aim of the study was to detect patients positive for HPV 16/18, 31/35/51 DNA probes. These HPV types have a higher oncogenic potential and patients with lesions harbouring them are considered to be at risk for progression to malignancy. These pat

One hundred eighty-six consecutive abdominoperineal resections for primary carcinoma of the anus, rectum, or sigmoid colon performed at Charity Hospital of Louisiana at New Orleans between January 1, 1963 and December 31, 1974 were reviewed. The operative mortality was 16 per cent. Complications during the same hospitalization occurred in 70 percent of the patients. Although most of the complications were minor, 22 percent did require some form of surgical intervention. Twenty-nine percent of the patients who were discharged developed late mechanical or cancer-caused complications which requir

BACKGROUND: We studied the type-specific infection of human papillomavirus (HPV) at the anal canal and penile site in a cohort of HIV-infected men.
METHODS: Prevalence, clearance, and incidence of specific HPV types in the anal canal and penis were determined in 733 HIV-infected men from the Spanish CAn Ruti HIV+ Men ([CARH•MEN]) cohort (538 men who have sex with men [MSM] and 195 heterosexual men).
RESULTS: In both groups, the most prevalent high-risk type was HPV-16 (anal canal [31.6% MSM; 6.8% heterosexual] and penis [4.8% MSM; 6.8% heterosexual]). The most prevalent low-risk type was HPV

Giant condyloma acuminatum (GCA), originally described by Buschke and Loewenstein in 1925 as a lesion of the penis, is more rarely seen in the anorectum and is characterized by clinical malignancy in the face of histologic benignity; however, malignant transformation to frankly invasive squamous-cell carcinoma has been described in about one-third of patients. In addition, malignant transformation has been reported in patients with "ordinary" condylomata acuminata. Human papillomavirus, known to cause condylomata acuminata, is also known to induce these tumors and was found in 96% of 63 cases

OBJECTIVE: We decided to evaluate if grade of anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) was associated to the HPV type in HIV positive patients, since this group of patients has immunodeficiency over long periods. We identified HPV types by PCR (polimerase chain reaction) and histological examination to determine the AIN grade in 39 HIV positive males with anal condylomata acuminata.
RESULTS: We observed high grade AIN (HAIN) in 9 (23.1 percent) and low grade AIN (LAIN) in 30 patients (76.9 percent). The most frequent HPV types were 6 and 11 (64 percent) and oncogenic types 16, 18 and 31 appeared

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The incidence of anal cancer is higher in patients with anal canal condyloma, a sexually transmitted disease, than in the general population. We determined the prevalence of anal dysplasia and cancer in patients with anal canal condyloma with respect to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status, immunity status, and human papillomavirus types.
METHODS: In 174 consecutive patients (114 HIV positive, 60 HIV negative) with anal canal condyloma, lesions were cured, and the patients were then followed up prospectively. Langerhans cells (LCs) in normal anal mucosa were quantified

A study, comprising dissection and microscopic examination of the pectinate area with special consideration to anal glands, was performed in 29 cadavers varying from fully mature neonatal deaths to 52 years of age. At the junction of the anal canal proper with the rectal neck, an "anorectal sinus" (a submucosal anal circumferential depression) was identified in 18 specimens; in 6 specimens, the anorectal sinus was replaced by a fibroepithelial band ("anorectal band"); in 5 specimens, the anorectal sinus was absent, and in 3 of the 5 specimens only scattered epithelial cells ("epithelial debris

Oropharyngeal, cervical, vulvar, and anal cancers share a common risk factor of HPV infection. HPV vaccination is currently recommended at age 11 or 12 to prevent new HPV infections for all genders with catch-up vaccination recommened up to age 26. Despite the known effectiveness of HPV vaccination to prevent HPV-related cancer, there is continued low uptake in the United States; only 40% of eligible persons were vaccinated in 2018, though rates are 70% among teenagers. Current American Cancer Society cancer screening guidelines recommend cervical cancer screening, but do not have specific rec
