Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Refractive Eye Surgeries Among Adults in the United Arab Emirates.

Background and aim Refractive errors (REs) are a leading cause of visual impairment globally. Surgical correction methods like laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK), and small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) are available in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but public acceptance and understanding remain inconsistent. This study aims to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding refractive surgery among adults in the UAE and to explore demographic and experiential factors influencing surgical uptake and perception. The role of age of arrival and language environment factors in Arabic heritage language development: A longitudinal study.

The Arabic development of Syrian refugee children (N = 133; mean age = 9;4 at Time 1) was examined over 3 time periods during their first five years in Canada. Children were administered sentence repetition and receptive vocabulary tasks in English and Arabic, and information about age-of-arrival (AOA), schooling in Arabic and language environment factors was obtained via parent report. Older AOA was associated with superior Arabic abilities across time, but regardless of AOA, children showed plateau/attrition patterns in Arabic and shifts to English dominance by Time 3. Increases in English o

Reading subtyping of Arabic-speaking university students: a contribution to the accuracy vs. rate model of dyslexia.

The current study sought to examine the existence of reading subtypes based on specific accuracy and rate criteria in dyslexia among a non-clinical sample of 120 Arabic-speaking University students and to characterize their reading-related and linguistic skills. For this aim, we relied on a conventional practice in reading disability literature based on a 25th percentile low achievement cut-offs. All students were examined using a battery of reading, linguistic, and cognitive tasks. The analysis conducted here provided partial support for the validity of the subtyping approach based on the acc

Teacher identification of reading difficulties among Arabic-speaking third graders in Israel: a pilot study.

Recently, concerns have been raised about Arabic-speaking students' reading achievement in Israel. Understanding language teachers' ability to identify poor reading skills is crucial to improve students' literacy outcomes. This pilot study examined three main aspects: the factors Arabic-speaking language teachers use to determine their third-grade students' word reading fluency and comprehension, their ability to identify students who need an intervention based on their reading performance, and the differences between teachers who make accurate and those who make inaccurate assessments of thei

Somatic symptom and related disorders in the Arab world: a narrative review of clinical features and care implications.

BACKGROUND: Somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRDs) are prevalent worldwide, but their expression, help-seeking patterns, and management are strongly shaped by cultural context. In the Arab world, where mental health stigma and distinct explanatory models are common, SSRDs remain under-studied despite their clinical and public health significance. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of 35 studies published through June 2025 on SSRDs in Arab populations. Searches of PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar identified observational studies, case reports, and cross-sectional surveys address

Squamous Metaplasia Associated With Hypovitaminosis A of the Crop and Salivary Glands in Captive Falcons in the United Arab Emirates.

Twenty falcons exhibiting tongue swelling, oropharyngeal pustules, and crop mucin gland impactions were presented for veterinary care to the Al Aseefa Falcon Clinic in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from October to January 2018-2021. Squamous metaplasia was confirmed in 2 euthanized falcons from this group. A study was undertaken to assess circulating concentrations of serum retinol in this group of diseased falcons (n = 20) compared with the values of a clinically healthy group (n = 20). Blood samples were collected and analyzed for concentrations of serum retinol. Comparison of serum retinol c

Cardiovascular disease in Arab Americans: A literature review of prevalence, risk factors, and directions for future research.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Recent evidence suggests Arab Americans, individuals with ancestry from Arabic-speaking countries, have an elevated risk for CVD compared to other ethnicities in the US. However, research focusing specifically on CVD in this population is limited. This literature review synthesizes studies investigating CVD prevalence, risk factors, and outcomes in Arab Americans. Multiple studies found higher rates of coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and hypertension compared to non-Hispanic White participants. The preva

Arabic translation and validation of the clinician administered Staden schizophrenia anxiety rating scale (S-SARS).

BACKGROUND: Research on anxiety in patients with schizophrenia of Arab origin is surprisingly scarce, particularly given that expressions of both psychotic disorders and anxiety disorders can be largely shaped by cultural factors. This study proposes to complement previous research by exploring the psychometric characteristics of an Arabic translation of the Staden Schizophrenia Anxiety Rating Scale (S-SARS) in chronic, remitted patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. As the Arabic version of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item Scale (GAD-7) has not been previously validated in Arabic in pa

Association of Leukocyte Telomere Length and the Risk of Disease Severity and Metabolic Comorbidities in Arab Patients with Psoriasis.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have related shortened leukocyte telomere length (LTL) with age-related diseases and worse prognosis. Telomere length attrition has recently been associated with inflammatory diseases, including psoriasis (Ps). However, no study has demonstrated an association between LTL and the risk of disease severity and metabolic comorbidities in Arab patients with Ps. METHODS: 68 patients with Ps and 42 normal controls were included. LTL and oxidative damage were determined by quantitative (q) PCR. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using l

The symptoms of surface dyslexia in Arabic: the impact of orthographic ambiguity on reading abilities of a patient with Alzheimer's disease.

Like other Semitic languages, Arabic is known for its rich morphology and consonantal writing system. In this article, we report the first case of acquired surface dyslexia in an Arabic-speaking patient (HBS). Surface dyslexia is characterised by difficulty reading irregularly spelled words, while performance is better with regular words and nonwords. The purpose of this study was to describe the symptoms of surface dyslexia in Arabic and to investigate how orthographic depth may affect reading in the context of semantic impairment. In HBS, who had Alzheimer's disease, reading was impaired for
