The case of an elderly man with secondary syphilis is described. The clinical features at the time of presentation were suggestive of cranial arteritis and there was a substantial but incomplete response to corticosteroids. Subsequent treatment with penicillin proved highly effective.

HLA tissue-type antigen determination for A-, B- and C-antigens in 88 patients suffering from giant cell arteritis of the temporal artery showed no significant deviations as compared to a control material of 3164 blood donors. A weak indication of association with antigen HLA-B8 appeared to be of interest due to a corresponding indication in previous investigation. We report a patient with IgM gammapathy, cryoglobulinemia, Raynaud's phenomena, purpura hyperglobulinemica of the legs and polyneuropathy. Endoneural vasculitis with infiltrations of eosinophilic and neutrophilic granulocytes and an extensive loss or Wallerian degeneration of myelinated nerve fibers were seen on histopathologic examination of a sural nerve biopsy specimen. In a patient who had a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for endometrial adenocarcinoma, a giant cell arteritis was found in many of the myometrial and tubal vessels and in a few of the small arteries of the cervix and ovaries. On subsequent questioning, a history of treatment for polymyalgia rheumatica during the preceding 12 months was elicited. Of the three previously reported patients with giant cell arteritis of the uterus, two were suffering from polymyalgia rheumatica whilst one possibly had disseminated visceral giant cell arteritis.

A 76-year-old male with a severely deforming rheumatoid arthritis, eosinophilia, polymyositis, and episcleritis developed a transient tonic pupil. The episcleritis, and a muscle biopsy revealing an occlusive arteritis with eosinophilia, suggest that a wide-spread rheumatoid arteritis caused a reversible ischemic insult to the ciliary ganglion and thus created a transient denervation of the pupil.

Two elderly patients presented with symptoms suggestive of occult temporal arteritis. Both were treated with high doses of corticosteroids although subsequent biopsies of the arteries did not show evidence of arteritis. After 5 months of corticosteroid therapy, the first patient died of Gram-negative bacterial pneumonia and cystitis and disseminated intravascular coagulation. The second patient, six days after the biopsy, died of pneumococcal meningitis which had presumably spread from a focus about the left optic nerve.
