Effect of sweeteners and sweetness enhancers on weight management and gut microbiota composition in individuals with overweight or obesity: the SWEET study.

Consumption of sweeteners and sweetness enhancers (S&SEs) is a popular strategy to reduce sugar intake, but the role of S&SEs in body weight regulation and gut microbiota composition remains debated. Here, we show that S&SEs in a healthy diet support weight loss maintenance and beneficial gut microbiota shifts in adults with overweight or obesity. In this multi-centre, randomized, controlled trial, we included 341 adults and 38 children with overweight or obesity. Adults followed a 2-month low-energy diet for ≥5% weight loss, followed by a 10-month healthy ad libitum diet with <10% energy from

Body mass repletion during ganciclovir treatment of cytomegalovirus infections in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Disseminated cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a common complication of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and contributes significantly to its morbidity and mortality. Ganciclovir, a guanosine analogue, inhibits CMV replication in vitro and in vivo, and its use can stabilize the clinical course of an affected patient. We examined the changes in body composition that occurred in four untreated patients and in eight patients who were treated with ganciclovir for serious CMV infections. Untreated patients lost weight, depleted body cell mass, as determined from total-body potassium measurements

Mitigating bias in the analysis and inferences from using longitudinal EHR data in disease outcomes research.

BACKGROUND: The electronic health record (EHR) provides an opportunity for extracting a wealth of up-to-date real-world longitudinal data. Although the main limitations of using EHR data have been well-recognized and well-described, under-recognized factors may threaten the reliability of inferences made regarding the impact of EHR variables on chronic disease outcomes. A problem not well-recognized is the impact of routinely acquired variables that are documented with every patient encounter regardless of the reason for the encounter such as vital signs, height, and body weight. METHODS: We

Effects of a stimulant-free dietary supplement on body weight and fat loss in obese adults: a six-week exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, osteoarthritis, and stroke. Stimulants, such as ephedrine and caffeine and their herbal counterparts, have proved effective in facilitating body weight loss, but their use is controversial due to their undesired effects. Other nutraceuticals have shown moderate success in reducing body weight, whereas several other compounds have demonstrated little or no effect. Therefore, a tolerable and effective nutraceutical that can increase energy expenditure and/or decrease caloric

Resting energy expenditure after Roux-en Y gastric bypass surgery.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms by which Roux-en Y gastric bypass surgery (RYGB) provokes weight loss are incompletely understood. Enhanced energy expenditure may be one contributing mechanism. Previous results on changes in resting energy expenditure (REE) after RYGB are inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to assess changes in REE after RYGB and whether REE predicts weight loss (percentage weight loss). SETTING: Obesity Clinic. METHODS: REE was measured by indirect calorimetry (mREE) before and 1 year after RYGB in 233 patients with severe obesity (175 women; all body mas

Influences on weight loss in type 2 diabetic patients: little long-term benefit from group behaviour therapy and exercise training.

The aim of our study was to assess the long-term (24 months) efficacy of a comprehensive weight reduction programme as compared to that of a conventional programme. The Comprehensive Programme comprised, besides the Conventional Programme (diet counselling), behavioural modification and exercise training. The 2-year follow-up period was completed by 53 patients (19M/34F; 88.3%). The differences (95% confidence intervals; CI) between the change in body weight of patients in the Comprehensive Programme compared to the Conventional Programme after 6 and 24 months of treatment were -2.2 (-4.0, -0.

Small changes in nutrition and physical activity promote weight loss and maintenance: 3-month evidence from the ASPIRE randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Current obesity interventions use intensive behavior changes to achieve large initial weight loss. However, weight regain after treatment is common, and drop out rates are relatively high. Smaller behavioral changes could produce initial weight loss and be easier to sustain after active treatment. PURPOSE: We examined the efficacy of an intervention that targeted small but cumulative participant-chosen changes in diet and physical activity (ASPIRE) and compared this treatment to standard didactic and wait-list control groups. The primary outcome measures were body weight, waist ci

Perceptive Body Image Distortion in Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa: Changes After Treatment.

One key symptom of anorexia nervosa (AN) is body image distortion (BID). For example, AN patients who are asked to perform body size estimation tasks tend to overestimate their body size; this is thought to indicate a distortion of the perceptive component of body image. Although BID is an important treatment objective, only few treatment approaches explicitly target body image, and even fewer target the perceptive component. Moreover, very little is known about how patients' perceptive body image changes after treatment and related weight gain. Consequently, we investigated changes of the per

Loss of Sult1a1 reduces body weight and increases browning of white adipose tissue.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Overweight and obesity affects millions of individuals worldwide and consequently represents a major public health concern. Individuals living with overweight and obesity have difficulty maintaining a low body weight due to known physiological mechanisms which prevent further weight loss and drive weight regain. In contrast, mechanisms which promote low body weight maintenance receive less attention and are largely unknown. To uncover these intrinsic mechanisms, we investigated a human cohort of constitutionally thin (CT) individuals which maintain a low body weight a

Effect of postnatal overfeeding on the male and female Wistar rat reproductive parameters.

Overweight/obesity has become a worldwide epidemic, and factors such as a sedentary lifestyle and inadequate eating habits directly contribute to the development of this condition. Studies indicate that rapid weight gain at critical development stages, such as the lactation period, is associated with the development of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes in the long term. In addition to metabolic changes during adulthood, overweight/obesity may influence reproductive function of the population. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate postnatal overfeeding effects on mal

Treatment of HIV-associated wasting with recombinant human growth hormone: monitoring of body composition changes by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA).

INTRODUCTION: Recombinant human growth hormone (r-hGH) has demonstrated efficacy in treating HIV-associated wasting (HAW), however, HAW has become less prominent since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Recent studies suggest that patients receiving HAART may still experience HAW. We investigated the nature of HAW and the efficacy of r-hGH in these patients. METHODS: We treated 27 HIV-positive patients receiving HAART who had either recent loss of >5% body weight or weight <90% lower limit of normal with 12 weeks of r-hGH (6 mg given either daily or every other

The effects of magnesium supplementation on obesity measures in adults: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Previous studies reported inconsistent findings regarding the effects of magnesium supplementation on obesity measures. This study was done to quantify the effect of magnesium supplementation on body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist Circumference (WC), Body Fat (BF) percentage and Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR). Four online databases (Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar and Cochrane library) were searched until March 2020 using relevant keywords. Random-effects model was used to pool effect sizes; Cochran's Q-test and I2 index assessed heterogeneity. Sensitivity analysis and Egger test were used to c
