A simple analysis is developed to evaluate the likely effectiveness of treatment of micrometastases by antibody-targeted 131I. Account is taken of the low levels of tumour uptake of antibody-conjugated 131I presently achievable and of the "energy wastage" in targeting microscopic tumours with a radionuclide whose disintegration energy is widely dissipated. The analysis shows that only modest doses can be delivered to micrometastases when total body dose is restricted to levels which allow recovery of bone marrow. Much higher doses could be delivered to micrometastases when bone marrow rescue i

Two types of plasmacytoid dendritic cell (pDC) proliferation disease are acknowledged so far by the 5th edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Haematolymphoid Tumors: Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) and mature pDC proliferation associated with myeloid neoplasms (MPDCP) in which pDC is part of the malignant clone. We aim to investigate pDC proliferation associated with non-myeloid acute leukemia (AL). A retrospective analysis of all cases admitted in our center with a diagnosis of non-myeloid AL from September 2020 to April 2023 was performed to select c

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a malignant neoplasm of the blood and bone marrow characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of precursor cells of B- or T-lymphocyte lineage. Usually, the disease arises because of spontaneous mutations in bone marrow cells. Risk factors include genetic predisposition, exposure to ionizing radiation, prior chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and certain environmental factors. Clinical manifestations may include recurrent infections, anemia, and an increased tendency toward bleeding and stroke. A 12-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with a

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare hematological malignancy characterized by the proliferation of plasmacytoid dendritic cells with a blast-like appearance. It usually presents in elderly people, and clinical manifestations include nodular blue-violet skin lesions, bone marrow infiltration and, less frequently, extramedullary involvement. Gynecological manifestation (breast mass and exocervical lesion) is an unusual and rare presentation. Herein, we report the case of a 51-year-old woman patient who presented with a history of a rapidly growing and bleeding breast m

Advanced systemic mastocytosis (AdvSM) is characterized by the presence of KIT D816V and other somatic mutations (eg, in SRSF2, ASXL1, and RUNX1) in 95% and 60% to 70% of patients, respectively. The biological and clinical consequences of AdvSM include multilineage involvement (eg, associated hematologic neoplasm) in 60% to 80% of patients, variable infiltration and damage (C-findings) of predominantly bone marrow and visceral organs through affected mast cell (MC) and non-MC lineages, and elevated levels of serum tryptase. Recently, the treatment landscape has substantially changed with the i

A 7-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was presented for evaluation of decreased appetite and respiratory signs. A CBC run on presentation revealed severe nonregenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, and leukocytosis characterized by a prominent population of blasts, having morphologic features suggestive of a monocytic lineage. The cat tested positive for FIV, FeLV, Mycoplasma haemominutum, and only mild abnormalities were identified on the chemistry panel. Bone marrow biopsies were obtained to investigate the bicytopenia and the possibility of a hematopoietic neoplasm. Although the

Patients referred to the authors' hospital for evaluation on suspicion of a bone or soft-tissue malignancy frequently present to the Orthopaedic Oncology Clinic with magnetic resonance (MR) images that show typical features of nonmalignant or nonneoplastic entities. The purpose of this article is to review the benign entities that may be mistaken by the radiologist for a malignancy and thus lead to needless referral to an orthopedic oncologist. Normal hematopoietic marrow and marrow edema due to a stress reaction may mimic a neoplasm at MR imaging, but knowledge of the typical patterns and loc

In 1984, a 21-year-old male was diagnosed with an acute lymphoblastic leukemia of pre-B cell type. Treatment with chemotherapy, including alkylating agents and prophylactic radiotherapy to the central nervous system, induced a complete remission. In June 1990, a biopsy from a supraclavicular node revealed a malignancy of mono-histiocytic type with erythrophagocytosis. Soon thereafter bone marrow involvement was found. No remission was achieved and the patient died in December 1990. DNA from bone marrow and lymph node obtained 1990 showed clonal rearrangements of both the immunoglobulin heavy-c

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant neoplasm of plasma cells leading to bone destruction and marrow failure. Prognosis and management of MM rely on cytogenetic determination of copy number alterations (CNAs). Nevertheless, karyotype analysis difficult due to the presence of few plasma cells and their low proliferative activity. A shallow whole-genome sequencing (sWGS) technology named LeukoPrint was used to detect genome-wide CNAs in MM patients (n = 128), which can cover the entire genome without involving cell culture. Compared with karyotyping and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH),

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare low-grade malignant neoplasm in the liver. Timely diagnosis and treatment of IMT are challenging due to its atypical symptoms and imaging results.
CASE REPORT: We report a 46-year-old woman who presented to our hospital with persistent hyperpyrexia and discomfort in the right upper abdomen for 2 months post bone marrow transplantation. Radiological findings revealed a space-occupying lesion of uncertain nature in the liver. Since the histological examination of the biopsy specimen indicated IMT, she underwent surgical resection.

Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is a genetic hemolytic disorder primarily characterized by hemolytic anemia, jaundice, splenomegaly, and frequent complications, including cholelithiasis, accompanied by the presence of spherocytes in the peripheral blood. This disorder predominantly follows an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern; however, certain cases exhibit an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. HS is the most prevalent disorder associated with defects in the red blood cell membrane. Primary myelofibrosis (PMF), a chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) characterized by splenomegaly

Chronic myelogenous leukemia is a myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by the BCR-ABL1 fusion gene and the development of the Philadelphia chromosome, which leads to an increase in granulocytes and bone marrow myeloid precursors in the blood, it can lead to many possible complications depending on the disease stage at the time of diagnosis. The Morel-Lavallée lesion (MLL) is a closed traumatic soft-tissue degloving injury, that results from the separation of the hypodermis from the underlying fascia, with resultant hemo-lymphatic fluid collection between the tissue layers. Bone marrow (BM) is a highly complex tissue that provides important regulatory signals to orchestrate hematopoiesis. Resident and transient cells occupy and interact with some well characterized niches to produce molecular and cellular mechanisms that interfere with differentiation, migration, survival, and proliferation in this microenvironment. The acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the most common and severe hematological neoplasm in adults, arises and develop in the BM. The osteoblastic, vascular, and reticular niches provide surface co-receptors, soluble factors, cytokines, and chemokines that

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a rare type of malignant hematological neoplasm. Although primarily involving the bone marrow, MM has a significant risk of metastasizing to other organs and may present with various clinical symptoms. However, the involvement of the respiratory system in the course of MM is extremely uncommon, particularly presenting with bilateral pleural effusion as the sole initial manifestation, which may result in a delayed diagnosis of MM. The present study describes the extremely rare case of a patient with MM presenting with myelomatous pleural effusion (MPE). The 78-year-old

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic slowly progressive autoimmune disorder characterized by symptoms of oral and ocular dryness, exocrine dysfunction, and lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands. Multiple myeloma (MM) is a bone-marrow-based malignant neoplasm of plasma cells associated with serum/urine monoclonal paraproteins and lytic skeletal lesions. There have been very few reported cases of MM, who had SS as the first presentation. We report a case of a woman diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome, who was later suspected to have multiple myeloma on serum protein electrophoresis. Fluoresc

An 80-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital due to appetite loss and vomiting. A blood examination showed liver disorder with disseminated intravascular coagulation. All tumor markers and hepatitis virus markers were negative. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography did not show tumor lesions, bone lesions, lymphadenopathies, or thrombosis. A bone marrow biopsy revealed large, atypical cells with brown pigmentation and positive immunostaining for HMB-45, S100 proteins, and CD79a without myeloid or lymphoid markers. We experienced a case of disseminated carcinomatosis of the bone marrow due
