Gendered preferences for varieties and traits in Uganda's common bean value chain: insights for breeding programs.

Common bean breeding efforts have focused on understanding and developing product profiles that align with farmers' trait preferences with limited emphasis on downstream value chain actors. Varieties that do not consider client-preferred traits are often on the shelves and not adopted by the targeted clients. Thus, considering trait preferences of downstream bean value chain actors like processors, traders and consumers is becoming important as they sometimes differ from those of farmers. This study investigated gender varietal and trait preferences of traders, consumers, and processors for co…

Late blight resistance of Julius Kühn Institute pre-breeding potato clones: a genome-wide association study.

BACKGROUND: Late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans remains one of the most devastating diseases in potato cultivation, and durable resistance requires the combination of multiple resistance loci. The Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) has maintained a late blight resistance breeding program for more than 60 years and has developed extensive pre-breeding material with largely unknown resistance genetics. To characterize the genetic basis of this resistance, field trials were conducted over three years with 200 genotypes, including pre-breeding clones and cultivars. Genotypes were inoculated with…

Remote sensing data and machine learning models estimate sorghum grain yield in a plant breeding program.

Phenotyping remains a critical bottleneck in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) breeding programs, limiting rates of genetic gain due to labor-intensive yield estimation methods. To address this concern, this study investigates the potential of integrating remote sensing data with machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models to improve sorghum grain yield predictions. Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)-based imagery was collected across multiple field trials, extracting standard vegetation indices, canopy height features, and panicle traits using a YOLOv11-based object detection model, "Y…

Marker-assisted backcross breeding to develop wheat lines with stable yellow rust resistance without yield penalties.

Wheat production faces severe yield threats globally and regionally in India from rust diseases caused by Puccinia species. Genetic resistance breeding is the most sustainable approach to mitigate these losses, but traditional phenotypic selection is often constrained by environmental fluctuations and rapid pathogen evolution. Here we utilized marker-assisted backcross breeding (MABB) to introgress broad-spectrum yellow rust resistance genes, Yr10 and Yr15, from the donor genetic stock PBW703 into the elite, high-yielding wheat cultivar DBW88 to develop two high-yielding rust-resistant genotyp…

Double burden: microfilariae infection amplifies metabolic costs of moult in breeding male village weavers (Ploceus cucullatus).

Breeding male birds face high energetic demands due to simultaneous investment in reproduction and feather moult, yet the metabolic consequences of parasitic infection during this period are poorly understood. To address this gap, we focused on non-moulting and actively moulting breeding adult male village weavers (Ploceus cucullatus) to investigate how microfilariae infection affects host biochemical energy status and overall condition. Using plasma glucose, triglycerides, β-hydroxybutyrate, and body mass adjusted for structural size as integrative markers, we examined how infection influence…

Natal Versus Breeding Dispersal in Arctic Terns (Sterna paradisaea): A Banding Study From Denmark (1931-2005).

The dispersal of migratory birds is a crucial process that directly influences population viability, genetic connectivity and adaptive potential in changing environments. Using banding data spanning 75 years (1931-2005) for Arctic Terns (Sterna paradisaea) in Denmark, we identified 200 breeding dispersal and 890 natal dispersal events. We characterised their spatial and temporal patterns and compared the differences between natal and breeding dispersal. We found limited dispersal distances and restricted directional preferences, as well as a low trans-regional exchange rate during breeding dis…

Implications for safety: ASFV-G-ΔI177L vaccine compromises health and semen quality in adult breeding boars.

African swine fever poses an ongoing threat to Eurasian wild pigs and the associated global swine production, with no internationally licensed vaccine available. Live attenuated vaccines like ASFV-G-ΔI177L demonstrated promising safety and protection in young domestic pigs, but comprehensive safety evaluations in breeding animals are necessary for regulatory licensing in the EU. This study investigated the safety of intramuscular immunization with ASFV-G-ΔI177L in adult breeding boars (Sus scrofa domesticus). Eight healthy boars were intramuscularly vaccinated and monitored for clinical manife…

Understanding breeding and culling decisions of dairy farmers: A qualitative study using the social-ecological model.

The average lifespan of dairy cows has decreased in the past few decades despite advances in cow welfare and genetic merit, which represents an ethical, environmental, and economic challenge. The longevity of cows is shaped through breeding and culling decisions made within wider economic, social, and institutional contexts. While several studies have identified reasons for breeding and culling at the cow-level, there is a lack of studies attending to the broader contextual or systemic factors which may affect these decisions. The Social Ecological Model (SEM) is a useful framework to understa…

Intelligent Veterinary Disease Management Driven by Knowledge Graph for Conservation Breeding of Captive Forest Musk Deer.

In artificial breeding of forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii), common diseases such as abscess, enteritis, pneumonia, and parasitic infections exhibit persistently high morbidity rates. The early symptoms of certain diseases are often insidious and difficult to discern. Conventional manual inspection routines not only fail to achieve accurate diagnosis but also frequently disturb the animals, induce stress responses, and consequently delay optimal treatment windows. To address this practical challenge, this study employs an improved BRW-GPLinker joint entity-relationship extraction approach…

Pigeonpea-Phytophthora cajani isolates characterization and assessment of resistance in elite pigeonpea germplasm and breeding lines.

Phytophthora blight (PB), caused by Phytophthora cajani, is a key constraint limiting pigeonpea productivity across the tropics and subtropics. Frequent PB outbreaks under erratic rainfall and warm temperatures intensifies the need for a holistic understanding of pathogen variability and stable host resistance. This study evaluated the morpho-cultural, physiological, and molecular diversity of P. cajani and investigated pigeonpea genotypes for resistance against representative isolates. Twenty-two isolates collected from diverse agro-ecological zones of India were purified, and six representat

Dynamic Transcriptional Regulation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Testis Axis in the Seasonally Breeding Teleost Sebastes schlegelii.

Spermatogenesis, the process of male germ cell development, is tightly regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-testis (HPT) axis in seasonally breeding teleosts. Despite its importance, our understanding of how the brain and male germ cells coordinate key transitions-such as testis initiation and maturation-remains limited, particularly in species with distinct seasonal reproductive cycles. Black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii), a marine viviparous teleost, exhibits a prolonged testis quiescent phase lasting three-quarters of the year, with testis initiation occurring in September and maturatio…

Study on the potential impact of sustained high temperatures during non-breeding season on largemouth bass.

With the growing scale of largemouth bass breeding, the demand for seedlings is increasing. As global temperatures rise, it is crucial to study the effects of high temperature their regulatory mechanisms in largemouth bass. In this study, we simulated a high water temperature (28 °C) in the non-breeding season in aquaculture ponds for 28 days to examine the growth, reproduction, metabolism, apoptosis, and methylation markers in largemouth bass; transcriptome analysis was also performed. The results showed no significant difference in body weight between male and female largemouth bass. However…

Review: Cross-breeding, advanced reproductive technologies, and genetic selection in twelve dairy production systems in Africa.

The supply and demand for milk in Africa have been rising due to factors such as population growth, urbanization, increasing incomes, and improved living standards. Dairy production significantly impacts the economic and social development of African countries, contributing over 10% to the agricultural gross domestic product in countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania. The ongoing development of the African dairy industry can be attributed, to a certain extent, to the utilization of cross-breeding strategies and advanced reproductive technologies such as artificial insemination, embryo …

Evaluating genomic breeding programs for a small dairy cattle population with widespread use of private bulls.

Modern reproductive technology combined with genomic selection allows for great genetic gains for dairy cattle populations. However, for small, local breeds, the risk of excessive inbreeding, low selection intensity, and lack of resources makes it challenging to stay competitive with the larger international breeds. In the case of Icelandic dairy cattle, the continued use of private bulls for natural mating for an otherwise centralized breeding program adds to the challenge. The objectives of this study were to compare genomic breeding programs for a population mimicking the Icelandic populati…

Detection and Continuous Tracking of Breeding Pigs with Ear Tag Loss: A Dual-View Synergistic Method.

The lossof ear tags in breeding pigs can lead to the loss or confusion of individual identity information. Timely and accurate detection, along with continuous tracking of breeding pigs that have lost their ear tags, is crucial for improving the precision of farm management. However, considering the real-time requirements for the detection of ear tag-lost breeding pigs, coupled with tracking challenges such as similar appearances, clustered occlusion, and rapid movements of breeding pigs, this paper proposed a dual-view synergistic method for detecting ear tag-lost breeding pigs and tracking i…
