A Gram-negative, non-motile, and reddish-orange colored bacterium, designated CAU 1643T, was isolated from a mudflat collected in Ganghwa Island, Republic of Korea. The bacterium was found to grow optimally at 30°C, pH 9.0-9.5, and with 0%-1% (w/v) NaCl. The highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to the bacterium were Algoriphagus kandeliae XY-J91T (97.9%), A. aquimaris F21T (97.1%), A. formosus XAY3209T (97.0%), and A. marincola DSM 16067T (96.2%). Numerous lectins act as pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) in the innate immune system of invertebrates. Here, a galectin (FmGal) was isolated from hemocytes of Fenneropenaeus merguiensis. Nesfatin-1 is an 82 amino acid anorexigen encoded in a secreted precursor nucleobindin-2 (NUCB2). NUCB2 was named so due to its high sequence similarity with nucleobindin-1 (NUCB1). In the present study, the gene cluster encoding HCN synthesis in a newly isolated Pseudomonas fluorescens strain, In5, from South Greenland was investigated. The bacterium Sinorhizobium morelense S-30.7.5 was isolated by a microbial screening using the sugar 1,5-anhydro-D-fructose (AF) as the sole carbon source. This strain metabolized AF by a novel pathway involving its reduction to 1,5-anhydro-D-mannitol (AM) and the further conversion of AM to D-mannose by C-1 oxygenation.
